Wartburg Castle in Thuringia: DW's Hannah Hummel goes to the place where German history was made!

Wartburg Castle, located close to Eisenach in Thuringia, is also known as The Castle of the Germans. But why?
DW's Hannah Hummel shows you around the castle, which is more than 1,000 years old. A fascinating journey to the times of minstrels, knights and ladies of castles - and to the famous Protestant Martin Luther, who translated the bible at Wartburg Castle.
Have you ever heard of the castle of the Germans?

Beautiful German Town - Ilmenau

Beautiful German Town - Ilmenau
Germany is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Depending on where you go, you might find Roman ruins, medieval villages, sparkling new cities, or Baroque city centers. It’s tough to know where to go first.
Ilmenau is situated in the northern part of the Thuringian forest, in an attractive scenery in the valley of the river Ilm, that lend its name for the town. There is not much known about the beginning of the settlement of Ilmenau. But it will have existed in worth mentioning size already in the 13th century. The location on a trading way, that led from Erfurt to Nuremberg, encouraged the development of Ilmenau. In the 14th century Ilmenau was mentioned several times, the town first time in 1341.
The earliest known masters over Ilmenau were the earls of Kaefernburg, who sold the town to the earls of Henneberg in 1343. Till the end of the 15th century the masters over Ilmenau changed several times by disposal and pawn. But in the end Ilmenau came back under the reign of the Hennebergs. After they died out Ilmenau came under the reign of the House of Saxon and was granted to the duchy of Sachsen-Weimar in 1660/61, where it remained until 1918.
In 1894 the Thuringian college of technology in Ilmenau was founded, a higher educational establishment for mechanical and electrical engineering. In 1926 renamed to engineer school of Ilmenau, it had a good reputation beyond the borders of Germany because of its solid and practice-oriented education. This was the decisive factor for the establishment of an technical college in 1953. The education in Ilmenau got its recognition in 1992 by the promotion to the Technical University of Ilmenau.

Today there live about 30.000 inhabitants in Ilmenau. Many tourists come to the town every year, which is because of its location a popular starting-point for walks and trips to the Rennsteig, and the cultural cities Erfurt and Weimar are within easy reach. The visitor of the town can follow the tracks of Goethe and enjoy the nature on the Goethewanderweg.
When you live in Ilmenau, you feel like you’re a part of a big family. Statistically speaking, one out of every four residents is a student, and many events and activities take place on campus. Ilmenau is one of the three most affordable cities in Germany for students, and if you love nature, you’ll find it right at your doorstep.
The Thuringian Forest offers a diverse array of opportunities for recreational activity. There are countless hiking trails around Ilmenau which highlight different themes. On the “Nature Trail”, you can learn about the distinctive geographical features of the Thuringian Forest, and if you take the trail “From Bach to Goethe”, you can enjoy breath-taking views of the landscape.

If you ever feel a desire for more variety and want to see something new, it’s only an hour away to Erfurt with public transportation.

Wartburg Castle - UNESCO World Heritage Site

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Wartburg Castle is a beautiful, fairytale-style castle in central Germany. Originally dating back to the 11th century, most of the buildings today date from the 19th century. Although the castle was never of particular military importance, it has a very important place in German culture. St Elizabeth of Hungary lived here, Martin Luther translated the Greek Bible into German here, and it was also the setting for the Sangerkrieg, a battle of minstrels later immortalised in Wagner's opera Tannhauser.

???????? Erfurt, Thuringia, Germany - city tour ????????

Erfurt is the capital and largest city in the state of Thuringia, central Germany. It lies in the southern part of the Thuringian Basin, within the wide valley of the Gera river.

Erfurt's old town is one of the most intact medieval cities in Germany, having survived World War II with very little damage. Tourist attractions include the Krämerbrücke (Merchants' bridge), the ensemble of Erfurt Cathedral and Severikirche (St Severus's Church) and Petersburg Citadel, the one of the largest and best preserved town fortress in Europe. The city's economy is based on agriculture, horticulture and microelectronics. Its central location has led to it becoming a logistics hub for Germany and central Europe. Erfurt hosts the second-largest trade fair in eastern Germany as well as the public television children’s channel KiKa.

The city is situated on the Via Regia, a medieval trade and pilgrims' road network. Modern day Erfurt is also a hub for ICE high speed trains and other German and European transport networks. Erfurt was first mentioned in 742, as Saint Boniface founded the diocese. Although the town did not belong to any of the Thuringian states politically, it quickly became the economic centre of the region. It was part of the Electorate of Mainz during the Holy Roman Empire, and later became part of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1802. From 1949 until 1990 Erfurt was part of the German Democratic Republic.

Notable institutions in Erfurt are the Federal Labour Court of Germany, the University of Erfurt and the Fachhochschule Erfurt.

The university was founded in 1379, making it the first university to be established in geographic area which constitutes modern day Germany. It closed in 1816 and was re-established in 1994, with the main modern campus on what was a former teachers' training college. Martin Luther was the most famous student of the institution, studying there from 1501.

Cycle Tour Day 20 Waltershausen to Weimar

Connal Tours European Cycling Adventure. The ABC Tour - Adriatic to the Baltic Cycling Tour.
Cycle Day 20: Waltershausen to Weimar (Germany). 66.6km (294vm). Today was certainly an easier day, flatter by far, gentle undulations of vast expanses of agricultural operations. Canola, peas, beets, corn, barley and a few infestations of poppies (they are pretty but must be a curse for the farmers). Cobbles and really serious cobbles - bone jarring. A new one on us was the road with 2 tracks of paving - surprisingly smooth - just had to stay on track. Our midway break stop was the bustling city of Erfurt. The capital of the State of Thuringia. Trams, pedestrians & cyclists all mixing it together. The Krämerbrücke bridge with medieval houses and shops stretching over the Gera River. Also associated with Martin Luther (father of the Protestant reformation) - was a monk here & ordained in the cathedral. Lots of pleasant cycle ways and small villages. Easy arrival into the heart of Weimar where we have the next 2 nights. Lots of interesting German history here and looks like a fun place to explore tomorrow.
Day 20 of 7 weeks cycling the 2400km from south coast to north coast in Europe and a little bit extra.

Cycle Tour Day19 Sünna to Waltershausen

Connal Tours European Cycling Adventure. The ABC Tour - Adriatic to the Baltic Cycling Tour.
Cycle Day 19: Sünna to Waltershausen (Germany). 61.23km (758vm). One small spike (1 km) and one very big spike (10km) 6-16%. We missed the rain that was threatening today. We went one way, it went another. But when you do hills you get rewarded with views and the beautiful feeling of a good downhill. The roads today were great with good surfaces, which made the hill work a tad more pleasant (minimal traffic to contend with). Big downhill to start. First small spike took us into the forests again. Some rather dreary towns with not apparently much open, until after circling, we finally found a bakery for coffee & cake. Then we knew we were in for the big climb of 8km. Up into the Thuringian Forest. Obviously, lots of logging going on. First section which was the steepest, at least was a one-way road for cars (oncoming to us). This helped not having the pressure of traffic behind on a climb. Relief to have got to the high point today, yet a few small inclines which really hurt before we could celebrate with having done the day. Beautiful old town centre to explore before giving into drinks & food.
Day 19 of 7 weeks cycling the 2400km from south coast to north coast in Europe and a little bit extra.
connalkit.com.au for all your cycling touring clothing. 8th June 2023.
