Kayaking and Hiking to Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls), Kauai - Hawaii
Secret Falls is an amazing waterfall that is a must-visit on your next trip to Kauai. Secret Falls is also called Uluwehi Falls. To get there, you need to rent a kayak to paddle up the Wailua River to the hiking trail that leads to the falls.
You can book a guided tour or an unguided tour.
We like to avoid the crowds, so we booked an unguided tour and booked the 7:15 am to 12:15pm rental time.
We booked our unguided tour through Wailua Kayak and Canoe at WailuaRiverKayaking.com. We rented a double seated kayak through them for 5 hours for $110.71 including tax.
It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to kayak the 2 miles up the river to the trailhead and then about 20 to 30 minutes to hike the 1 mile trail to Secret Falls. Total round trip is about 6.1 miles total.
We wore our water shoes for both the kayak portion and the hiking portion. You could wear hiking shoes, but they are going to get wet.
Wailua Kayak and Canoe is located at 162 Wailua Rd, Kapa'a, HI 96746. When you pull in, there is free parking across the street from the building.

Canyon Trail to Waipoo Falls Trail, a Popular Hike in Waimea Canyon, Kauai, Hawaii
Waipoo Falls is an impressive 800 ft tall waterfall in the heart of Waimea Canyon in Kauai. The falls are broken into two tiers. The beginning part is a short waterfall of about 25 ft. It then flows down rocky terrain before plunging down to create the main, taller waterfall. We always stop to look at this gorgeous waterfall every time we drive into Waimea Canyon. The last time we were there, we decided to hike the popular hike Waimea Canyon Trail to Waipoo Falls. If you are hoping to have a great view of the falls at the end of this hike, sadly you won't. You can't hike to the bottom of Waipoo Falls. This hike will only take you to the top of the falls. It is not your classic waterfall hike but it is a beautiful hike nonetheless.

Kayaking Kauai's Wailua River and Hiking to Secret Falls
One of our favorite activities on Kauai is to kayaking up the Wailua River and hiking to Uluwehi Secret Falls (Secret Falls).We stayed a couple of nights in Kaapa which gave us close access to kayak the Wailea River and hike to Uluwehi Falls in Hawaii.
It had been over 9 years since we kayaked up the waileu river and hiked to the the secured 100' waterfall. This was also the first time we did the trip up to the falls without our kids.
We rented a double kayak from Wailua Kayak & Canoe which made for quick and easy access to the Wailua river.
If you don't want to do this self guided tour kayaking the Wailua river in Kauai and hiking to the Secret Waterfall on your own, there are group tours you can join like this one,

Stunning Views of Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali Coast in Kauai, Hawaii
Our visit to Waimea Canyon State Park and the Na Pali Coast was absolutely unforgettable. The dramatic landscapes of this region of western Kauai were absolutely mind-blowing.
From sky-high waterfalls to razor-sharp cliffs, this Kauai road trip ranks among the most beautiful drives Hawaii has to offer. But we didn't end our visit there.
After taking in the views from the Kalalau Lookout in Na Pali State Park, we took to the water on a Na Pali boat tour to explore sea caves, waterfalls, and the Jurassic views of the Na Pali coast.

Wailua Kayak Tour to Secret Falls. What you need to know before you Kayak the Wailua to Secret Falls. The Kayak & Hike to Secret Falls is one of the most exciting & memorable things you can do in Kauai. Don’t miss this beautiful waterfall adventure on you’re visit to Kauai.
Is the Wailua Kayak tour good for families? That's not a simple answer. Our youngest just turned 6 years old. Obviously she was no help on the Kayak & the muddy, uneven trail was though for those little legs. My 9 year old was pretty good but it was tough for her as well. I'd recommend this hike for families with kids 10 years old or older. This was our third time to do the Kayak hike to secret falls, but our first time to do it without a tour guide. I would definitely recommend a guided tour on your first time & then if your comfortable just rent kayaks & do the adventure on your own.

The first time we used Outfitters Kauai. Both times they were excellent. Here's the link to their website.
They aren't the only option though. There are several companies that can guide you. Or like we did on this last trip, you can just rent kayaks & do it on your own. They'll give you a map so it's pretty easy to find the waterfall. We used Wailua River Kayak Rentals here's the link to their site...
My biggest piece of advice though would be to leave as early in the morning as possible because the trial & water fall area gets busier & busier as the day goes on. Also, don't forget to pack a good lunch to eat at Secret falls. You'll need the energy for the hike & paddle back down the Wailua river. The last two times we did the tour the wind was blowing in our face on the entire paddle back & you will get tired, even if you're in good shape.

Beach Near Pride of America Port - Nawiliwili, Kauai
While on our Pride of America Cruise, we went to the beach near the Marriott while in port in Nawiliwili, Kauai. It was a short walk from the pier. There is also an Enterprise Rent A Car in the Marriott and we had rented from there the day before, since it was a convenient walk form the pier.
