Wałbrzych - known as Valbrich in English, is a city located in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, in southwestern Poland.
Wałbrzych was once a major coal mining and industrial center alongside most of Silesia. The city was left undamaged after World War II and possesses rich historical architecture, among which the most recognizable landmark is the Książ Castle, the largest castle of Lower Silesia and the third largest in Poland.
In 2015 Wałbrzych became widely known due to the search for a allegedly buried Nazi gold train, which however was not found.

Książ (pronounced: Ksyonsh [ˈkɕɔ̃ʂ], Polish: Zamek Książ, German: Fürstenstein) is the largest castle in the Silesia region, located in northern Wałbrzych in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland. It lies within Książ Landscape Park, a protected area located in the Wałbrzyski Foothills. The castle overlooks the gorge of the Pełcznica river and is one of the Wałbrzych's main tourist attractions
Zamek Stary Książ -- ruiny zamku znajdują się w Wałbrzychu, w północno-wschodniej części Pogórza Wałbrzyskiego w Sudetach Środkowych w województwie dolnośląskim.
Położenie
Zamek Stary Książ zbudowany jest na murach dawnego zamku piastowskiego Bolka I. Położony jest na lewym wzgórzu nad przełomem Pełcznicy w południowo-wschodniej części Książańskiego Parku Krajobrazowego, położonego na pograniczu dwóch odmiennych makroregionów fizyczno-geograficznych: Przedgórza Sudeckiego i Sudetów Środkowych. Pełcznica płynie głębokimi dolinami o charakterze wąwozów. Na odcinku około 2 km między Szczawienkiem a Pełcznicą tworzy skaliste jary o głębokości dochodzącej do 80 m. i szerokości 20 - 30 m. Na długości 4 km tworzy liczne zakola o stromych zboczach z urwiskami i skalnymi żlebami. W ten krajobraz z urozmaiconą rzeźbą krętych jarów i głębokch dolin Pełcznicy, odsłoniętych wychodni skalnych wkomponowany jest Zamek Stary Książ.
Opis zamku
Zamek Stary Książ to wzniesiona w 1779 roku malownicza budowla w stylu eklektycznym, powstała po przebudowie istniejącego w tym miejscu średniowiecznego zamku piastowskiego z końca XIII wieku. Podczas prac powstały między innymi stylizowane na gotyk romantyczne ruiny zamku Stary Książ. Nowy zamek otoczono fosą i murem obronnym, a wejście do niego prowadziło przez bramę z dwoma wieżyczkami. Przebudowa ta zatarła ślady dawnego zamku pierwotnego i przez wiele lat, aż do końca XX wieku, obiekt uważano za sztuczne ruiny. Brak danych na temat powstania istniejącego systemu umocnień zewnętrznych w postaci wałów otaczających zamek właściwy i podzamcza, wskazuje na to, że istniał tu nieznany średniowieczny zamek książęcy. Cały zespół zamkowy składa się z zamku właściwego, w kształcie zbliżonym do trójkąta oraz dwóch trójkątnych przedzamczy położonych jeden za drugim na zachód od zamku właściwego. W budynku głównym połączonym z wieżą znajdowała się sala reprezentacyjna, zbrojownia, sypialnie, sala sądowa, izba więzienna z izbą tortur i kaplica. Pod kaplicą połączoną krużgankami z głównym budynkiem znajdował się loch pochodzący z zamku średniowiecznego. Podczas rozbudowy ruin zamku użyto wiele oryginalnych elementów renesansowych i barokowych detali architektonicznych przeniesionych z zamku w Trzebieniu i innych okolicznych obiektów
Historia zamku
Pierwszy gród na wzgórzu nad Przełomem Pełcznicy powstał między IX-X wiekiem, który pod koniec XIII wieku został przebudowany na murowany zamek obronny. Stary zamek został wzniesiony przez Bolka I księcia świdnicko-jaworskiego. W 1290 roku do zamku książę Bolko I Surowy przeniósł swoją siedzibę z Lwówka Śląskiego. Swoje znaczenie warownia straciła w 1392 roku po przejściu księstwa świdnicko-jaworskiego do Korony Czeskiej. W 1428 roku zostaje zdobyty przez husytów. W następnych latach zamek był siedzibą i bazą wypadową rycerzy-rabusi i jako ich siedziba został zniszczony w 1484 roku. Pozbawiony właściciela zamek popadł w ruinę i przestał funkcjonować w XV wieku. W roku 1794-1797 właściciel zamku Książ Jan Henryk VI von Hochberg zlecił architektowi Christianowi Tischbeinowi urządzenie otoczenia zamku nad potokiem Pełcznicy i przebudowanie istniejących resztek ruin dawnego zamku na romantyczne ruiny dla księcia Hansa Heinricha IV Hochberga. Celem budowy była inscenizacja średniowiecznego otoczenia wokół Zamku Książ. Po wojnie Zamek podpalony spłonął latem 1945 roku. Nie był on jednak w tak złym stanie jak obecnie. Do dziś zachowała się sztuczna ruina z końca XVIII w. z pozostałością głównego budynku zamku z zachowanym podziałem wewnętrznym. Brak w nim stropów, a z wieży zamkowej ocalały tylko fragmenty.

Wybierając się do niego nie uciekniemy od wydobycia węgla, bo to przecież niezwykle ważna część jego historii. The Lower Silesian Voivodeship is located in the south-west of Poland, among the people Lower Silesia is compared with the Loire Valley (the place of the French nobility), with many medieval palaces, castles and fortresses. Legnica is a small town that is pleasant to walk around, go to the Market Square, as well as the city park, where there is a palm house and rare exotic plants.

FROM NO TO WAŁBRZYCH TO YES VOLCANO IN POLAND?!!
My day in Wałbrzych didn't go that well.. I was walking around waiting for my train and noticed how different this city is from other places in Poland. I felt somewhat negative vibes around me. I was so happy when my guide and friend Mateusz from previous day texted me he had some last places to show me. He rescued me from Wałbrzych and took me to Bolków. A cute little town with an amazing castle! We explored the ruins together, climbed the tower and had an amazing view. We visited another castle ruins close by: zamek Świny. The sun was going down slowly. We chased the sunset by driving to an old volcano rock: Czartowska Skała. Ran to catch the sunset there. Magical moment and magnificent view... Memories forever in beautiful Poland.
What a country! What an area. Lower Silesia with all it's castles and palaces. Beautiful cities and towns. Rolling hills. What a trip this is!

Książ (pronounced: Ksyonsh [ˈkɕɔ̃ʂ], Polish: Zamek Książ, German: Fürstenstein) is the largest castle in the Silesia region, located in northern Wałbrzych in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland. It lies within Książ Landscape Park, a protected area located in the Wałbrzyski Foothills. The castle overlooks the gorge of the Pełcznica river and is one of the Wałbrzych's main tourist attractions.
A first fortification at the site was destroyed by the Bohemian forces of King Ottokar II in 1263. The Silesian duke Bolko I the Strict (d. 1301), ruler in Świdnica and Jawor, had a new castle built from 1288 to 1292 and took his residence here, adding Lord of Książ to his titles. The burgraviate included the neighbouring settlements of Świebodzice, Szczawno, and Pełcznica. When the last Świdnica duke Bolko II the Small died in 1368 without children, the castle's estates passed to the Luxembourg king Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia, the son of Bolko's niece Anne, while his widow Agnes of Habsburg reserved the usufruct for herself. After her death in the year 1392, King Wenceslaus, also King of the Romans since 1376, seized the Duchy of Świdnica and obtained Książ Castle.
As Agnes, contrary to her limited real rights, had sold the Książ estates, the castle passed through many hands. In 1401 it was obtained by the Bohemian noble Janko of Chotěmice (d. after 1442), who later rose to a governor of the Świdnica-Jawor lands. During the Hussite Wars, the castle was captured by the insurgents and occupied in 1428-1429. After Janko's death, the Bohemian king George of Poděbrady acquired Książ from his descendants and transferred the administration to the Moravian general Birka of Nasiedle. In 1466 Hans von Schellendorf obtained the castle from the Bohemian Crown. It was renamed Fürstenstein.
The second castle complex was devastated in 1482 by Georg von Stein, a military commander in the service of the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus while his forces campaigned in Silesia. Stein granted Frederick von Hohberg the estates, his descendant Konrad I von Hohberg obtaining the castle hill in 1509. The von Hohberg family were elevated to the rank of Freiherren (Baron) in 1650, Graf (Count) in 1666, and Imperial counts (Reichsgrafen) in 1683, and owned the castle until 1944.
During World War II, the castle was seized by the Nazi regime in 1944 after Count Hans Heinrich XVII of Hochberg, Prince of Pless, had moved to England in 1932 and became a British citizen; moreover, his brother Count Alexander of Hochberg, also a Polish citizen and owner of Pszczyna Castle, had joined the Polish army in 1939. Supervised by SS and Organisation Todt personnel, the building complex at Fürstenstein became part of the vast underground Project Riese complex, presumably a projected Führer Headquarter and a future abode for Adolf Hitler.[1][2] Construction works were carried out under inhumane conditions by forced labourers and inmates of Gross-Rosen concentration camp. The castle was subsequently occupied by Red Army forces in the wake of the Vistula–Oder Offensive in 1945. A memorial marks the site of the Fürstenstein subcamp. Parts of the historic building structure were demolished during reconstruction; numerous artefacts were stolen or destroyed during the Soviet occupation.
After the war the castle complex was used as a recreation home and cultural centre by the communist authorities. In recent years, large parts of the interior have been elaborately restored. Parts of the tunnel complex beneath the castle are currently used by the Polish Academy of Sciences for gravimeter measuring, while several tunnels are accessible to the public on guided tours.

Zamek Książ to największy zamek Śląska i trzeci co do wielkości w całej Polsce. Jego majestatyczne mury kryją liczne i piękne komnaty z tą najwystawniejszą - Salą Maksymiliana. Film powstał we współpracy z Miastem Wałbrzych. Wałbrzych to miasto, które kojarzyło nam się jedynie ze Złotym Pociągiem i nigdy nie wydawało nam się ciekawą destynacją podróżniczą. Zmieniło się to, kiedy spędziliśmy tu więcej czasu i mieliśmy okazję lepiej poznać to miasto. Większość osób przyjeżdża tu tylko z powodu pięknego Zamku Książ, ale Wałbrzych ma dużo więcej do zaoferowania.

Wałbrzych - co zobaczyć w 2 dni? TOP atrakcje: Zamek Książ, Stara Kopalnia, palmiarnia, stare miasto
Podczas wizyty na Dolnym Śląsku nie mogliśmy pominąć jednej z jego największych atrakcji - Zamku Książ. Odwiedziliśmy także Starą Kopalnię, jednak ta nie wywarła na nas wrażenia. Naszą bazą wypadową był Wałbrzych, jednak jeśli macie możliwość, wybierzcie raczej inne miasto. Do Wałbrzycha warto zajechać jedynie na burgera - do fantastycznej restauracji Złota Stacja.
Książ to kompleks zamkowy zlokalizowany w jednej z dzielnic Wałbrzycha. Jest on trzecim co do wielkości zamkiem w Polsce (po Zamku w Malborku i Zamku Królewskim na Wawelu). Z naszym biletem za 59 zł mogliśmy zwiedzać: podziemia zamku (z przewodnikiem), zamek (z audioguidem), tarasy zamku oraz palmiarnię. Podziemia zamku bardzo nam się spodobały. Podczas zwiedzania przewodnik przybliżył nam kilka teorii spiskowych związanych z działalnością na tych terenach żołnierzy III Rzeszy oraz historie (legendy) związane ze słynnym Złotym Pociągiem. Sam zamek zarówno wewnątrz jak i z zewnątrz robi ogromne wrażenie. Ciekawostką jest to, że podczas wojny, jeden z najbardziej okazałych apartamentów był szykowany na siedzibę Hitlera - jednak ten podobno nigdy nie pojawił się w Książu. W drodze do Palmiarni koniecznie zobaczyć trzeba punkt widokowy, z którego można podziwiać Zamek w całej okazałości. Niedaleko znajdują się również ruiny Starego Książa.
Następnie kroki skierowaliśmy do palmiarni - która może nie jest tak okazała jak ta w Poznaniu, ale na pewno warto ją odwiedzić.
Poprzedniego dnia odwiedziliśmy Centrum Nauki i Sztuki Stara Kopalnia. Załapaliśmy się na ostatnie wejście na godzinę 16:00. Za bilet zapłaciliśmy 28 zł. Stara Kopalnia to największa atrakcja turystyki poprzemysłowej w Polsce, mieszcząca się na terenie dawnej Kopalni Węgla Kamiennego „Julia - zatrudniającej w szczycie swej działalności kilka tysięcy pracowników. Zwiedzając kompleks poznać można historię węgla, górnictwa i górników pracujących w skrajnie niebezpiecznych warunkach. W zbiorach muzeum znajdują się maszyny górnicze oraz ich elementy, pamiątki związane z działalnością kopalń wałbrzyskich oraz materiały audiowizualne i zbiór archiwaliów. Niestety to miejsce trochę nas rozczarowało. Spodziewaliśmy się zobaczyć więcej żywej historii - przede wszystkim szyby i tunele, w których pracowali górnicy. Mimo wszystko duży plus za to, że obiekt jest tak zadbany i został udostępniony do zwiedzania. Kopalnia ma być w najbliższych latach rozbudowywana, więc nie wykluczone, że jeszcze kiedyś tu wrócimy.
