10 Best Places to Live or Retire in Costa Blanca, Spain | Explore Spain

In today's Explore Spain episode, we share with you the 10 Best Towns and Cities to Visit in Costa Blanca, Spain.

Splendid beaches, delicious cuisine, vibrant nightlife and lively fiestas all make Spain one of Europe's best getaways. Because Spain encompasses several autonomous regions and islands, the country boasts one of the most widely diverse cultures and landscapes on the continent.

Costa Blanca is a stunning region that offers something for everyone, whether you're looking to relax on the beach, explore historic landmarks, or sample delicious cuisine. Its warm climate, beautiful beaches, and stunning natural scenery make it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Spain.

You can explore the long stripe of the Costa Blanca (White Coast), one of Spain's premier holiday coasts, popular with both domestic and foreign visitors. It's very busy in summer, with a lively social scene and great beaches. Even if that's not your scene, there are still several worthwhile destinations along this coast. Although the original fishing villages have long been engulfed by the sprawl of resorts, a few old-town kernels, such as those at Xàbia (Jávea) and Altea, still survive. Alicante itself has plenty to offer besides legendary nightlife, while Dénia is an enticing blend of a traditional fishing town, beach resort, and gastronomic destination.

BEST Things to do in Villajoyosa, Alicante | La Vila Joiosa | La Vila, Spain

Villajoyosa is a lovely seaside town in the province of Alicante and is part of the Costa Blanca. The town is known to the locals simply as La Vila and Villajoyosa literally translates to “Joyful Town” so this will give you an idea of the friendliness of the locals that live here and the atmosphere in the town. So in this video I will be showing you the best things to do in Villajoyosa, including, getting lost in the colourful streets of La Vila Joiosa, visiting the Valor chocolate factory, VilaMuseu, checking out the Villajoyosa beach and much more.

Villajoyosa is a great place to visit if you’re looking for a day trip from Benidorm or Alicante as it’s not too far away and is very different from both of these towns. You could easily spend the day walking around La Vila exploring, or if you’re just looking to chill out, Villajoyosa’s beach is one of the most beautiful I have seen in Spain and is lovely to spend the day on. I’d say this is a perfect spot for families, friends or couples to visit and there is a variety of activities for you to choose from. And who doesn’t love chocolate?! Villajoyosa is Spains capital of chocolate so visiting a chocolate factory is a must…even if it’s just for the free samples at the end ;)

I really hope you enjoy your trip to Villajoyosa, let me know down in the comments if you plan on visiting. I hope this video has made you want to visit and gave you a few ideas of things to do here. Remember to like and subscribe and i’ll see you next Friday!

La Vila Joiosa literally means Joyful Town, although the inhabitants often abbreviate it to La Vila. It has over three kilometers of beaches, including La Platja Centre (Central Beach), close to the city centre.
The river Amadorio runs through La Vila.

The town is especially famous for 3 things: for its brightly colored houses, for its wonderful beaches and for delicious chocolate – made by the Spanish chocolate manufacturer Valor.

The most important attraction of Villajoyosa is the colorful house facades of the old town and the picturesque coastal front.
According to a legend, the bright colors once helped fishermen to find their way back home in the evening.

The old centre of Villajoyosa, which has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, can be reached from the Plaza de la Generalitat along the Carrer Major.

Santa Maria de la Vila Joiosa
The church itself was built for strength rather than elegance; it was an integral part of the fortifications of the old town.

Chocolate Museums in Villajoyosa
Villajoyosa’s chocolate making tradition dates back to the 17th century, when the town became one of the main ports where cocoa from Venezuela and Ecuador was unloaded and distributed in Europe.

Port of Villajoyosa
One stop not to be missed on a visit to Villajoyosa is its port, which has retained much of its traditional charm.

Villajoyosa has a rich cultural heritage. Its history as a town dates back to the 6th century. The town has been settled by the Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans, and Moors.

The colourful costal town of Villajoyosa, is this the happiest town in Spain! #ourplaceinthesun

Villajoyosa

Located at the northern end of the Costa Blanca in the Alicante province, Villajoyosa (La Villa Joiosa) is the capital of the Marina Baixa district. A delightful and historic town, it stretches the length of a lovely wide, sandy beach, with pretty coloured fishing houses running along the seafront and is encompassed with a backdrop of mountains.

Situated around 26 kilometres from the city of Alicante and Alicante International airport, Villajoyosa is a well-situated destination, ideal for exploring the rest of the Costa Blanca coastline.

History
Villajoyosa has a rich cultural heritage. It’s history as a town dates back to the 6th century and it has been settled by the Greeks, Phoenicians, the Romans and of course the Moors, when it actually fell into some decline, which is unusual for a Moorish occupied town.

The town as it is known today was founded in 1293 by an Admiral who served in the Kingdom of Aragon’s navy. It’s name Villajoyosa, literally means Joyful town.

Throughout the centuries Villajoyosa has been an important trade point along this coastline; trading in olive oil, cereals and wine, and shipbuilding, amongst others. But probably what it is most famous for is chocolate. During the 19th century the town started to develop a chocolate-making industry. Because of its trade connections, it started importing cocoa from Ecuador and Venezuela and the industry grew and grew. The chocolate brand, ‘Valor’, which can be found in most shops and supermarkets throughout Spain comes from Villajoyosa.

Around town
A seafront backed by rows of colourful fishing cottages, and old walled town centre, with a distinctive gothic feel, roman bridges and a traditional Spanish working town feel. Villajoyosa is really a ‘joyful’ place to visit.

There are plenty of amenities and facilities for holiday-makers: shops, bars and restaurants in abundance, a lively fish market and bustling local market, where you can pick up fresh local produce, home-made local souvenirs and crafts and other holiday items.

Villajoyosa Beach
Villajoyosa is set at the mouth of a river, which sweeps into the Mediterranean Sea. Three kilometres of wide, golden, sandy beaches form part of the local coastline. The local beaches are popular with water sports enthusiasts and there are good facilities on the beach.

Places to visit
Villajoyosa is well placed to explore the stretch of coastline known as the Costa Blanca in the Valencia region. Close by are the resorts of Benidorm, Altea, Denia and of course the city of Alicante.

You could also take trip by boat to the lovely Island of Tabarca. Visit the Caves of Canelobre, a marvel of mother nature; or head to Elche to see the largest Palm Forest in Europe, where you can enjoy a stroll through the subtropical environment.

Climate
Villajoyosa and the whole of the Costa Blanca enjoys a privileged location and an excellent mild climate, with an average year round temperature of 18-20° C.

Qué ver en Villajoyosa, La Vila. Descubriendo Alicante
