PEDRA DE LUME, Sal Island, Cape Verde.
The salt crater of Pedra De Lume, in local language: Salinas, is one of the most characteristic place of the island, being tha most visited place of the Island of Sal.
Pedra de Lume has been famous for its salt evaporation ponds (salinas), exploitation of which began in the 18th century. According to geologists, the waters in the lake rise from deep in the earth rather than from lateral infiltration from the ocean. The salinas are situated in the crater of an extinct volcano. Together with the mountain Cagarral, the salinas and the crater form a protected landscape, covering 8.02 km2 (3.10 sq mi).

More precisely, Calheta de São Miguel is a city located in the northern part of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. In 2010 its population was 3,175. It lies on the east coast, 31 km (19 miles) north of the capital Praia. It is the seat of the municipality of São Miguel.
Calheta de São Miguel forms an urban agglomeration with the adjacent settlements Venice and Ponta Verde, total population 5,615 in 2010.
