Saarbrücken is the capital and largest city of the state of Saarland, Germany. Saarbrücken is Saarland's administrative, commercial and cultural centre. he city is situated next to the French border at the heart of the metropolitan area of Saarland. Saarbrücken was created in 1909 by the merger of three towns, Saarbrücken, St. Johann, and Malstatt-Burbach. It used to be the industrial and transport centre of the Saar coal basin. Products included iron and steel, sugar, beer, pottery, optical instruments, machinery, and construction materials.

Historic landmarks in the city include the stone bridge across the Saar (1546), the Gothic church of St. Arnual, the 18th-century Saarbrücken Castle, and the old part of the town, the Sankt Johanner Markt (Market of St. Johann). Twice in the 20th century Saarbrücken was separated from Germany: in 1920–35 as capital of the Territory of the Saar Basin and in 1947–56 as capital of the Saar Protectorate.

Some of the closest cities are Trier, Luxembourg, Nancy, Metz, Kaiserslautern, Karlsruhe and Mannheim. Saarbrücken is connected by the city's public transport network to the town of Sarreguemines in France, and to the neighboring town of Völklingen, where the old steel works were the first industrial monument to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994 — the Völklinger Hütte. The city is served by Saarbrücken Airport (SCN), and since June 2007 ICE high speed train services along the LGV Est line provide high speed connections to Paris from Saarbrücken Hauptbahnhof. Saarbrücken's Saarbahn (modelled on the Karlsruhe model light rail) crosses the French–German border, connecting to the French city of Sarreguemines.

The Giant Old Ironworks Anyone Can Explore (Without Getting In Trouble)

When Germany shut down the monstrous 100-year-old Völklingen Ironworks in 1986, they decided to do an unusual thing: keep it. And then RE-OPEN IT AS A TOURIST ATTRACTION ????????. I went to Saarland to explore an incredible piece of industrial heritage...

Visiting the ABANDONED IRONWORKS (Völklinger Hütte) ???? + Saarbrücken City Tour in SAARLAND, GERMANY

Welcome to Saarland, Germany! In this video, we'll be touring Saarbrücken, the capital of the state of Saarland, plus we'll visit the old ironworks in the neighbouring town of Völklingen.

We'll start off the morning in Saarbrücken, where we'll take you out for brunch at a local restaurant, we'll wander through the farmer's market, we'll visit the Castle Church and its impressive gardens, plus we'll stop at a few other spots along the way. You may not get the sense that this was once a major industrial area, but that'll change with our next attraction.

In the afternoon, we'll venture over to the Völklingen Ironworks. This is hands down one of the most unusual places we’ve visited on our travels. This massive complex covers 6 hectares and was the site of pig iron production (also known as crude iron) from 1882 through 1986.

When the ironworks shut down in 1986, a great debate followed: tear down the places or turn it into something? Our guide explained that many of the former workers wanted this place gone because it was a reminder of the jobs they’d lost and the tough times that followed.

However, the Völklingen Ironworks managed to survive and today it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. My favourite part was ‘Paradise’, a section of the ironworks that has been taken over by nature.

Saar, Germany | City of Saarbrücken, Neunkirchen, Homburg, Merzig | Drone 4k video |Saar what to see

Saar, Germany. The 4k video, filmed with a drone, provides an overview of the federal state of Germany - Saarland. The fact that it is the smallest among other lands does not detract from its uniqueness and beauty. From a bird's eye view you can see picturesque hilly areas, dense forests, fertile fields, green vineyards. The decoration of the Saar are cities - majestic, cozy, atmospheric.

general information
Saarland is literally the name of the Saarland, a federal state in Germany. The name of the region is associated with its location in the basin of the river of the same name. The area of the territory is 2,570 sq. km, and the population is more than a million people.
The land borders with such European states as Luxembourg, France. Throughout its history, the Saarland belonged to either Germany or France. Only in 1957 did the land finally become part of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The leading industrial sector of the region in the past was coal mining and processing. Today, the Saarland's coffers are replenished by the steel industry, information technology, the ceramics industry and the automotive industry.
Saarland can be called a wine-growing region. It is famous for its white wine, such as Riesling. Potatoes are grown here.
Developed in the Saar and tourism.

Capital
The capital of the Saarland is Saarbrücken. It is located on the border with France and is the westernmost point of Germany. Rock by the river - this is how the name of the city is translated. It is located in the valley of the river Saar, on a hill. The ancient castle was erected on a rock near the river, and it became the foundation of the future city.
The capital of the region is a university, industrial center. Here are popular attractions among tourists and citizens, which are located near the bridge over the Saar River: Saarbrücken Castle, St. Ludwig, market of St. Johan, Basilica of St. John, Old Bridge. At the bridge over the Saar there is a beautiful marina. From here on small boats you can go to France.

Nature
The Saar land was once rich in coal deposits. The coal legacy has negatively affected the cleanliness of the environment. But today, environmental laws are respected in the region, and the local nature looks charming.
The Saar River flows here, which originates in the neighboring state - France. Vineyards are grown in its lower reaches.
Beautiful places can be admired at Lake Boschtal. Cycling and hiking trails, the picturesque village of Nochfelden, cottages along the banks of the reservoir - such a magnificent landscape attracts many tourists to the reservoir.

Major cities
Neunkirchen is located near the capital of the region, 20 km. It is located on the river Blis. Neunkirchen is the second largest city after Saarbrücken in the Saarland. The most popular attraction in the city is a complex of industrial facilities called Hyttenareal. 40 hectares of the former industrial area is today a well-visited tourist park.
The city of Homburg is famous for its French charm, as it has long been a territory of France. A visit to Homburg will be interesting for lovers of antiques. Beer lovers will also like it here.
Mercy - the German city of Merzig has such a meaning in translation from French. The Werner Freund Wolf Park is a wolf reserve that has existed in the city since 1972. Merzig is also known for the healing spring Bitzener.

What to see
Heavy industry, which was previously developed in the region, left behind a historical legacy in the form of museums and industrial monuments. It is worth looking at the Metallurgical Plant in Völklingen, the ancient settlement of the Celts (Otzenhausen), the center of Villeroy and Boch (Metlach), the Neunkirchen Industrial Park.
You can get acquainted with the unique archaeological park - the European Cultural Park Bliesbrück-Reinheim. Reconstructions and finds from different eras are presented here, and this place itself is unique in that it is located on the territory of France and Germany at the same time, on both sides of the border between these states.

Attractions
In Saarbrücken, in its oldest part, there is a castle of the same name. This building was erected in 999. The castle was built in the Baroque style; a beautiful palace square adjoins it. It was once the residence of Prince Wilhelm Heinrich.
A great place for hiking is the market of St. Johan. It is an old square with cozy restaurants and craft quarters.
In Homburg there is a famous natural attraction - a system of red sandstone caves. Its length is 140 m, width is 60 m. The system consists of 12 floors.

What to do in Saarland Germany?
When in Völklingen, Germany, you will have the chance to encounter rather striking scenery, known to attract thousands of visitors every year.

Gigantic ironworks from the heydey of the iron and steel industry, monumental platforms, and specially designed walking pathways between the metal goliaths - Völklingen will easily hypnotize not only those fascinated by industrial history.

What is there to know about the history, the essence, and the various ways to experience The Völklingen Ironworks in Germany? Here are some Travel in Pink bits and bobs to prepare you for your ultimate Industrial Europe encounter.

The history of The Völklingen Ironworks began in the late 19th century. Their construction was initiated in 1873 by a man named Julius Buch. Unfortunately, the daring engineer did not have the chance to complete his master-project due to financial circumstances.

The industrial site was furtherly extended and improved on various occasions from 1881 to 1980, following the latest discoveries and process improvements in the industry. Some of its most novel additions include an inclined ore lift, a burden shed, a water tower, а sintering plant, and more.

Following the worldwide steel crisis, the Völklinger Hütte blast furnaces were shut down in 1986, while significant parts of the closed works were preserved as historical monuments of special importance.

Later on in 1994, Völklinger Hütte was featured as the first industrial monument on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site List. It had been continually attracting tourists from all over Europe ever since - as a one-of-a-kind testimony to an industrial epoch of our history.

Places to see in ( Saarbrucken - Germany )

Places to see in ( Saarbrucken - Germany )

A hair’s breadth from the French border in Southwestern Germany, Saarbrücken mixes industrial history with the splendour of the Counts and Princes of Nassau-Saarbrücken who ruled the region for centuries. Two people more than any left their mark on Saarbrücken, 18th-century Prince of Nassau-Saarbrücken, William Henry, and his architect Friedrich Joachim Stengel. For three decades the pair remodelled Saarbrücken into a Baroque city, building palaces, churches, squares and fountains.

One of most absorbing ensembles is Ludwigsplatz, where eight palaces face the sublime Ludwigskirche. Around Saarbrücken Castle there’s much to keep you occupied, as over the last two decades a system of tunnels and underground chambers has been excavated and opened as part of the Saar Historical Museum.

In the 1760s Friedrich Joachim Stengel was commissioned by William Henry, Prince of Nassau-Saarbrücken to build not just this church but the surrounding square as well, all as a single harmonious work. The result is one of the high points of German Baroque art, as well as one of Germany’s standout Protestant churches.

Stengel was also responsible for another stunning Baroque church built in the mid-1750s for the city’s growing catholic congregation. The church was partly funded by French King Louis XV and a collection was made in Rome by Pope Benedict XIV. Before you enter, you have to inspect the bronze doors, which show scenes from the life of St John the Baptist and were remade in 1986 by the local artist Ernst Alt after they were damaged in the war.

South of Saarbrücken and just a couple of kilometres from the border crossing at Goldene Bremm, the Deutsch-Französischer Garten is a park with a diplomatic past. The size of this museum beside Saarbrücken Castle is deceptive.

On ground level there’s a long narrow building from 1988 with a barrel roof, and this conceals a small world of historic underground chambers and tunnels that were excavated in the 1990s and 2000s. East of Saarbrücken a few kilometres down the Saar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Völklingen Ironworks was established in 1873 and shut down in 1986, and is the only smelting works built in the 19th century to have made it to the present.

Also mandatory on Schlossplatz is this museum in the former district administrative building on the south side of the square. One of three branches under the Saarlandmuseum umbrella, the Moderne Galerie is in a modern complex built in 1979 and made up of three interconnected pavilions. One head-turning landmark is the town hall, which is newer than it looks and has a Gothic Revival design from 1900. The facade is busy with traceried windows, pinnacles, and masses of other ornamentation.

Johanner Markt is decked with the dozens of stalls for the city’s main market. For the last 40 years the old centre of Saarbrücken has been a pedestrian zone, and this square in the middle somewhere to come and gauge daily life in the city. If you have time to spare you could take a walk up the Saar from the Saarbrücker Schloss to the district of Sankt Arnual, one of the oldest districts in the city.
