Amazing Ancient City Near Yangon | Twante

Amazing Ancient City Near Yangon | Twante
Twante Township also Twantay Township is a township in the Yangon Region of Burma (Myanmar). It is located west across the Hlaing River from the city of Yangon. The principal town and administrative seat is Twante. The township is home to the Shwesandaw Pagoda and it is believed to contain strands of hair from the head of Gautama, and its annual pagoda festival is held on Burmese New Year. The longest man made canal in Myanmar is Twante canal and it is also a shortcut waterway to Ayawaddy river to Yangon river which divides Twante Township with its length of 35 km and there is one bridge that spans the canal is called Twante bridge. Baungdawgyoke Monastery in Twante Township is famous as there are pagodas including the replica of Mahabodhi Temple.

The Twente Canal is a canal that connects the Irrawaddy River and the Yangon river in Myanmar. The 35 km (22 mi) canal is a heavily used short cut between the city of Yangon and the Irrawaddy Division. The canal is named after the town of Twante, located near the canal's mid-way point. The canal was the quickest route from Yangon to the Irrawaddy Delta until the 1990s when roads between Yangon and the Irrawaddy Division became usable year round. The canal is still heavily used.

Due to the lack of regular maintenance, the canal has become silted and narrower over the years. In 2010, the mouth of the canal was widened by 600 feet (180 m). However, plans to put in concrete embankments were yet to be carried out, and the navigation problems still remain. Twante Bridge is only bridge that spans the Twante Canal.

The construction work on Twante Canal began in 1903 during the British colonial rule. The canal was completed in 1915. The Twante Canal shortened the distance by the Kanaungto creek between Yangon and the Irrawaddy river. The Irrawaddy Flotilla Company, Ltd., which handled nearly all inland carrier traffic in British Burma, ran daily services from Yangon to the Irrawaddy delta and Upper Burma. In 1935, the canal was widened and deepened to allow for the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company's large steamers to Mandalay. Previously larger steam ships had to go out the Yangon river and up one of the larger mouths of the Irrawaddy.

Famous Buddha in Bago city (in Myanmar)

Today we're going to Famous pagoda in bago city. Shwe maw daw pagoda , maha zaydi pagoda and mya tha yaung pagoda.Bago was the capital of the Mon Kingdom Hanthawaddy until halfway the 16th century, after which it became the capital of the Taungoo Kingdom until 1599.
Near the palace is the Shwemawdaw Paya, at 116 meters the highest pagoda in Burma, visible from miles away. The 16th century Mahazedi Paya was built to enshrine a Buddha tooth relic. Behind the pagoda is a monastery that reminds of the Ananda pagoda in Bagan with its gilded sikhara spire.

Myanmar, Around Yangon

Yangon is a small yet busy capital city and as such has the workings of government within its boundaries. Situated on the River Yangon, it has a flourishing port, but the most spectacular sights are the Buddhist temples, pagodas and stupas. Arriving by air, the visitor will see golden domes dotting the thick greenery of the outlying areas of the city. Set on Singuttara Hill, is the most holy of all these shrines, and the place every visitor must see -- The Shwedagon Pagoda.

Information on How to get to Dalah, Myanmar, by: www.AdventuresInWanderland.NET

How to Get to Dalah (Dala):

You have to go to the jetty on Pansodan Street, where you’ll be ushered to the tourist area (to the left just as you enter) so you can pay 4000K (roundtrip) as a tourist, instead of the 100K the locals pay. You do get a bottle of water with that ????

TIP: Take the ferry at sunset for beautiful views of Yangon.

You can see my detailed blog post about Dalah here, on my website,
