Wandering Through Trujillo Spain

Columbus Day 2020 in Trujillo, Spain was a wonderful experience. This town of 9,500 residents is steeped in history. Take a walk with us down narrow streets and passageways, past medieval palaces and monuments that represent a rich period. One family in particular, Pizarro, played a major role in world history when they explored Peru, which then came under Spanish rule.

A visit to TRUJILLO/Spain

Visiting the old Spanish town of Trujillo. Trujillo is located in the province of Cáceres, in the region of Extremadura, Spain. You can reach it through the A-5 after 255 km West of Madrid. The old town has a Roman, medieval, and renaissance taste in its architecture. Conquerors Francisco Pizarro and Francisco de Orellana were born there. Pizarro's equestrian statue stands in the main square, the Plaza Mayor.

????Visit Trujillo
Trujillo is in the province of Caceres in the Extremedura region of Spain.

Trujillo is Extramadura's most beautiful town, when its main square is floodlit at night it is one of the most beautiful in Spain. Trujillo has some fine medieval buildings but it is the architecture of the 15th and 16th century that is particularly impressive. At this time many Conquistadors built beautiful mansions and palaces in Trujillo. Many of these have been influenced by their owners travels in the Americas.

Explore Trujillo
Trujillo is built on a hill, at the top of which is a Moorish palace, built to defend Trujillo against the Spaniards in the Reconquest but in 1232 it was taken and became part of Christian Spain.

The Plaza Mayor of Trujillo is a large square the edges of which include several palaces and churches as well as bars and restaurants. The square is one of the best examples of 16th century Renaissance architecture in Spain.

In the square there is a bronze statue of Fernando Pizarro. Pizarro is the most famous of several Conquistadors who were born in Trujillo. Fernando Pizarro conquered Peru. His brother's mansion the Palacio del Marques de la Conquista is one of the best in Trujillo and is on the southwest corner of the Plaza Mayor. Take a close look at the corner window which is carved with the heads of Fernando and his brother and their Inca wives.????

Trujillo Spain, in the region Extremadura about 3hrs from Madrid

A lesser known area of Spain is a town Trujillo. Actually this region (Extremadura) is off the beaten path but a must see. There are many interesting historic towns . Some go back to Roman and Moor times. I'm here in the summer and you don't see the hordes of tourists. The home town hero would be Pizarro. A conquistador exploring the new world. As was the habit to bring back the bounty from the new world. Around the 1500's (yr)
Iglasea de San Martin also a great visit. A walk to the top brings you to the original Moor Castle.

Wander into the Plaza Mayor and you could be forgiven for thinking that you have stumbled onto the filmset of a historical blockbuster. The square is surrounded by baroque and Renaissance stone buildings topped with a skyline of towers, turrets, cupolas, crenellations and nesting storks. Beyond, the illusion continues with a labyrinth of mansions, leafy courtyards, fruit gardens, churches and convents. Trujillo truly is one of the most captivating small towns in Spain.

Hometown of many prominent conquistadors, Trujillo came into its own only after the colonisation of the Americas. Then, Francisco Pizarro and his cronies enriched their birthplace with a grand plaza and series of impressive Renaissance palaces that make the town what it is today.

TRUJILLO DAY TRIP | Huanchaco, Huacas de Moche & Chan Chan, Peru | Northern Peru Travel

We finally left Cusco for Trujillo, the third-largest city in Peru, located in Northern Peru.

In this vlog, we take you on a day trip from Trujillo to three different sites:

1. Huacas de Moche (Temples of Moche)
2. Chan Chan Peru
3. Huanchaco

Here's the link to the full-day tour we took:

Our first stop was the Moche Temples, which consists of the Moche Museum (Museo Huacas de Moche), Temple of the Sun (Huaca del Sol) and Temple of the Moon (Huaca de la Luna). It was the city of the Moche civilization, which was developed around year 600 - a few hundred years prior to the Inca civilization.

Our second stop was the Chan Chan Ruins, which are one of the most endangered UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The ruins of Chan Chan also includes the Rainbow Temple (Huaca del Dragón), as well as the main Chan Chan Archaeological Zone. Chan Chan is a pre-Columbian city in the Americas. This Chimu Kingdom was the largest adobe city in the world with around 10,000 buildings. It was the capital of the Chimú civilization.

We ended our day in Huanchaco, a coastal town that used to be a sleepy fishing village. The waves here make the Huanchaco surf popular with the locals.

We're so glad we did this tour. It was a definite Northern Peru Travel bucket list item, as this is one of the least visited regions of Peru. Northern Peru receives less than 10% of International visitors to Peru.

We stayed at DUE Hotel, and here's the link to booking dot com DUE Hotel page

Cáceres is a city in western Spain's Extremadura region. Founded by the ancient Romans, it retains widespread evidence of subsequent occupation by many different cultures. Its old town, Ciudad Monumental, has a mix of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, with cobbled medieval streets, fortified houses and palaces. Encircled by 12th-century Moorish walls, it also has around 30 towers, some occupied by nesting storks.

Rodeada por muros moros del siglo XII, también tiene alrededor de 30 torres, algunas ocupadas por cigüeñas que anidan.
