Torrelavega is a municipality and important industrial and commercial hub in the single province Autonomous Community of Cantabria in northern Spain. It is situated roughly 8 kilometres from the Cantabrian Coast and 27.5 kilometres from the capital of the Autonomous Community, Santander, half way between the Principality of Asturias and the Basque Country. The rivers Saja and Besaya flow through the city.
It is the capital of the comarca (county, but with no administrative role) of Valle del Besaya which includes also composed of the municipalities of Cartes, Los Corrales de Buelna, Cieza, Arenas de Iguña, Bárcena de Pie de Concha, Molledo, Anievas and San Felices de Buelna.
Its highest point is 606 metres and its lowest point is 12 metres.
Torrelavega is a regional center for industry and transport, and its weekly livestock fair is famous in Spain. Its stadium is known as El Malecon. The Cave of Altamira, famed for the prehistoric paintings found inside, is about 10 kilometers northwest of the city.
Torrelavega was founded at the end of the thirteenth century by Garci Lasso de la Vega I (the elder), Adelantado Mayor of the Kingdom of Castile in the name of King Alfonso XI of Castile. Its current name is due to the contraction of the original eponym of Torre de la Vega. The Castle or Tower of the Vega's was built by Leonor Lasso de la Vega, daughter of Garci Lasso de la Vega II, the younger, and mother of the Íñigo López de Mendoza, marqués de Santillana in order to administer the tax and privilege due in the family's territory.
The name of the comarca, Valle del Besaya is derived from the Astur-Leonese Bisalia, which in turn derives from the Celtic, Bis-salia (the second Salia or Saja) from the two rivers that flow through the city. Torrelavega was an important agricultural hub in the Kingdom of Castile since medieval times. Continuous population growth and industrial development enabled Torrelavega to attain city status in 1895 from the Queen Regent Maria Christina of Bourbon, Princess of the Two Sicilies. The city is home to the main seat of the Spanish anarcho-syndicalist labor union the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo.

Torrelavega - Visita guiada - Cantabria en 4K
Entre los valles de los ríos Saja y Besaya está Torrelavega, conocida como la capital del Besaya. Su fundación se atribuye a Garcilaso de la Vega I, adelantado mayor de Castilla, que edificó aquí una torre, y desde el siglo XVIII se conoce como torre de la Vega o Torrelavega.
Eminentemente industrial, ocupa el segundo lugar de Cantabria en población tras Santander. Su ubicación estratégica durante toda la Edad Media, en los cruces de caminos hacia Asturias y la Meseta, la transformarían en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII en un gran centro comercial e industrial, con sus fábricas de harinas y curtidos. Y desde finales del XIX a principios del XX, alcanzó su máximo esplendor económico con la llegada de grandes empresas, concediéndola el título de ciudad la regente María Cristina en 1895.
Sus calles y plazas conforman un casco urbano abierto, con espacios verdes, de ocio, nuevas plazas, avenidas y calles peatonales con una completa oferta comercial de arraigada tradición, por sus múltiples ferias y mercados, sobre todo ganaderos en el Mercado Nacional de Ganados, y siendo sede de la Feria de Muestras de Cantabria, con ferias monográficas, exposiciones y congresos a lo largo del año.
Comenzamos la visita en el Palacio de Demetrio Herrero, realizado por el arquitecto Joaquín Rucoba en el año 1888, adquirido por el Consistorio en 1925 para albergar su sede.
Cerca está la plaza de José María González Trevilla, más conocida como Pequeñeces, que tiene aire inglés y la escultura dedicada a la jubilación del personaje popular “Mero el barrendero”.
Por la calle Ave María continuamos hacia la Iglesia de la Virgen Blanca y la Plaza Roja o de Baldomero Iglesias, donde está también el yacimiento de la Torre de la Vega.
El templo es post-modernista, proyectado por Luis Moya en 1937 y finalizado en 1964, y conjuga clasicismo barroco con la severidad del arte castellano. Se levantó sobre los restos de la antigua Iglesia de Santa María de la Vega y de la Torre de la Vega.
A la Plaza Baldomero se la conocía como la plaza del grano y actualmente como la Plaza Roja, por el color de su suelo, tras su remodelación en el año 2000. Es el punto de reunión de los vecinos de Torrelavega, de mayor concentración de público y ambiente de la ciudad.
Salimos de la plaza por la calle Consolación, una de las más emblemáticas de Torrelavega por sus comercios y elegida para iniciar multitud de rutas.
La gastronomía de Torrelavega es rica y variada, con numerosos establecimientos hosteleros. Pero la especialidad de la ciudad son las polkas, un exquisito dulce de hojaldre.
Nos desviamos a la izquierda por la calle Francisco Díaz hacia la Plaza Mayor, llamada Gilberto Quijano, que fue durante 300 años centro de la vida comercial de Torrelavega. Una Real Cédula, expedida por Carlos III, en 1767, concedió licencia a la villa para celebrar un mercado franco una vez por semana.
Continuamos por la calle José Felipe Quijano, con buenas muestras de arquitectura con galerías de madera, para seguir por la calle Consolación, donde encontramos otras diez jardineras de gran tamaño con árboles plantados.
Y llegamos a una gran plaza donde se encuentra la Iglesia monumental de la Asunción, obra del arquitecto vizcaíno José María Basterra, realizada de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Conocida popularmente como la Iglesia Vieja es la muestra más representativa del neogótico en Cantabria. Está construida con piedra caliza de las canteras de Riocorvo, con dos variedades tonales, rojiza y gris.
Del el exterior de la iglesia destaca su espigada torre con una esbelta aguja ubicada en el lado sur, el reloj de la torre en forma de rosetón construido en el taller de Miranda de Ebro, el gran rosetón de la zona occidental del templo, con tradición lombarda y cisterciense y las vidrieras.
De planta basilical de tres naves separadas por arcos apuntados, la central es de mayor altura que las laterales, y con girola pentagonal en vez de la trapecial gótica medieval. Tiene formas simplificadas, sin apenas decoración escultórica, empleando molduras del gótico clásico, a veces con elementos del románico catalán y lombardo.
También sobresale el órgano de tipo romántico, una colección de lienzos de José Escudero y la imagen del Cristo de la Agonía, realizada en madera policromada.
En la calle de los Mártires encontramos la Casona Calderón, Casona Montañesa o de los Escudos. De estilo montañés, originalmente de una sola planta, se construyó a comienzos del siglo XVIII. En su fachada destacan los escudos de armas de la familia Calderón, perteneciente a la orden de Calatrava.
Y cerca de allí, dentro del Triángulo Cultural de Torrelavega, con el Teatro Municipal Concha Espina, la Biblioteca Municipal Gabino Teira y la Sala de Exposiciones Mauro Muriedas.
Para terminar, nos dirigimos al Parque Manuel Barquín, la zona verde más amplia del centro urbano de la ciudad, con gran variedad de especies arbóreas, algunas de ellas centenarias.
