Leipzig Day Trips | Castle in Torgau | Expat Family in Germany
With the kids having some time off school, we took a quick day trip down to the city of Torgau, a beautiful town in Saxony on the banks of the Elbe with an incredible history. With an amazing castle (Schloss Hartenfels) and the first church designed and consecrated by Martin Luther, it is well worth a train ride from Leipzig!

Torgau is a town on the banks of the river Elbe located in Saxony Germany with a population of approx 20,000. The town is best known for the meeting place when the USA and SOVIET armies first met near the end of World War ll. Torgau has a lot of history dating back to the 10th century and was on a popular trade route between Leipzig and Frankfurt. The Renaissance Hartenfels Castle is the main attraction that dominates the downtown area, we could not enter castle due to covid but still was quite impressive from outside. Torgau is a very beautiful and interesting town with lots of history, was so glad that I could visit.

The town of Torgau near Leipzig still looks like it did in the 16th century, much to the delight of its visitors. Hartenfels Castle is the largest fully-preserved castle in Germany from the Early Renaissance period. It was completely rebuilt in the early 1,600s as the residence of the rulers of Saxony. Its most outstanding architectural feature is the spiral staircase which still puzzles architects today, since it was constructed without any central support for the stairs. But equally important is the chapel, the oldest Protestant church in the world. It was built to the ideals of the great reformer Martin Luther, with the Word, symbolized by the pulpit, taking center stage. Luther himself dedicated the church in 1544, on one of his more than 40 visits. It became the blueprint for all new Protestant churches that followed.
