Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. Van is a city in eastern Turkey's Van Province, located on the eastern shore of Lake Van. It is the cultural center of the area's Kurdish majority. The city's population is mostly Kurdish. In 2010 the official population figure for Van was 367,419, but many estimates put it much higher with a 1996 estimate stating 500,000 and former Mayor Burhan Yengun is quoted as saying it may be as high as 600,000. The Van Central district stretches over 2,289 square kilometres (884 square miles)
Archaeological excavations and surveys carried out in Van province indicate that the history of human settlement in this region goes back at least as far as 5000 BC. The Tilkitepe Mound, which is on the shores of Lake Van and a few kilometres to the south of Van Castle, is the only source of information about the oldest culture of Van.
The modern city is located on the plain extending from the Lake Van, at a distance of 5 kilometers from the lake shore.
Van has often been called The Pearl of the East because of the beauty of its surrounding landscape. An old Armenian proverb in the same sense is Van in this world, paradise in the next.This phrase has been slightly modified in Turkish as dünyada Van, ahirette iman or Van for this world, faith for the next.
The city is home to Van Yüzüncü Yıl Üniversitesi (Van 100th Year University) and recently came to the headlines for two highly publicized investigations initiated by the Prosecutor of Van, one of which was focused on accusations against the university's rector, Prof. Hasan Ceylan, who was kept in custody for a time. He was finally acquitted but lost his rectorate. He is a grandson of Agop Vartovyan, an Ottoman Armenian who is accepted as the founder of modern Turkish theatre. Prof. Hasan Ceylan is also the department chairman of Environmental Engineering in the Van 100th Year University.In culinary terms, as some cities in Turkey became renowned for their kebap culture or other types of traditional local dishes, Van has distinguished itself with its breakfast culture.

TransportAt present, Van is connected with Tatvan, which is 96 km away on the opposite shore of Lake Van, by a train ferry that helps to avoid the necessity to build a 250 km railway through difficult mountainous terrain. The railway will be constructed when traffic increases sufficiently.Van is connected with the rest of Turkey through the Ferit Melen Airport.
Van is a city with a short name, a long history, and numerous interesting things to see, especially if you like history and natural beauty. Or cats.
Located on the eastern shore of Lake Van, the city of Van (VAHN, pop. 400,000, alt. 1727 meters/5666 feet) has been here for a very long time.
The Rock of Van, the ancient fortress and funeral monument around which a later citadel was built, bears cuneiform inscriptions dating from the Kingdom of Urartu (c. 1300-700 BC—here's a Timeline).Beside the citadel, the ruins of the old town of Van, built atop the ruins of ancient Urartian town of Tushpa, lie beneath a carpet of grass.
Besides the local museum, the Rock of Van and the citadel, you should visit the Church of the Holy Cross on Akdamar Island, the Urartian ruins at Çavuştepe, 25 km (16 miles) SE of Van, and the dramatic Kurdish fortress at Hoşap, 33 km (21 miles) farther to the SE. In your travels, you may even see a Van cat. You'll know it by its white fur, eyes of different colors, and love of swimming (of all things).
The old town of Van was burned by Ottoman forces in 1915 as they retreated before a Russian army which had invaded Ottoman territory in support of Armenian revolutionaries. The Russians held the town until 1917, when the Russian Empire itself suffered revolution and collapse.
The modern city of Van grew up 5 km (3 miles) inland from the lakeshore and the Rock of Van during the 20th century, with wide boulevards and town planning. Because it has the best hotels, restaurants, transportation and other services, Van is the best base for explorations of the region.
Van is an important stop on my Recommended Itinerary of Eastern Turkey. It's a long way from western Turkey by bus or car, and an even longer trip by train, so if you're coming directly you'll want to fly. Turkish Airlines has daily flights from Istanbul and from Ankara.

Tarihi zenginliklerle dolu Çukurovanın belli başlı kalelerini incelediğimiz gezimizin ilk bölümüyle karşınızdayım. Motorumun gidonunu önce Kalecik Köyünde yer alan Savranda Kalesi'ne, sonra da Ceyhan'da yer alan Yılankale'ye kırdım. Birçok medeniyete ev sahipliği yapmış kaleleri incelerken tarifsiz bir heyecan yaşadım ve vaktin nasıl geçtiğini fark edemedim. Umarım sizler de seyrederken keyif alırsınız.
VAN TURKEY -Tarihi Van Şehri- City of History (MUTLAKA İZLE) (MUST WATCH)
Van’nın Tarihi ve Tarihçesi
Van Anadolu'nun en büyük kapalı havzası olan Van Gölü kıyısında toprakları verimli akarsuları bol iklim koşulları oldukça elverişli bir yerleşim merkezidir. Bu yüzden tarihin eski çağlarından beri birçok medeniyetin hakim olduğu bir yer olmuştur.
Arkeolojik araştırmalara göre Van ili yazılı tarih öncesi dönemleri M.Ö. 5000-3000 yılları Kalkolitik dönem başlarına kadar uzanmaktadır. M.Ö. 2000 yılında bu bölgede ilk olarak devlet kuranlar Hurrilerdir. Daha sonra Hurrilerin bölgedeki devamı olan yerli kavimler tarafından M.Ö. 900 yıllarında başkentleri Tuşba ( VAN) olan Urartu devleti kurulmuştur. Urartular M.Ö. 612 yılına kadar Van Bölgesinde güneyde yukarı Mezopotamya'ya kadar uzanan topraklarda hüküm sürmüşlerdir. M.Ö. IX. Yüzyılda Kral Sarduri tarafından Van kalesi yaptırılmıştır. M.Ö. VII. Yüzyıl başlarında Mezopotamya'dan Anadolu'ya akınlar düzenleyen Asurlular Van kalesini ele geçirince Urartular Tuşba yakınlarında Rusahinili (Toprakkale) şehrini kurarak varlıklarını devam ettirmişlerdir. M.Ö. 612 yılında Anadolu'ya gelen Medler büyük Urartu Kırallığı'na son vermişlerdir.
Yerleşik bir nizam kuramayan Med Krallığı Persler'e yenilip yıkılınca Van ve yöresi M.Ö. 332 yılına kadar Pers M.Ö. 129 yılına kadar Büyük İskender'in doğu seferinden sonra Makedonyalılar ve M.Ö. 88 yılına kadar da Partların egemenliğinde kalmıştır.
Tarihi dönem içerisinde Van ve yöresi Romalılar ile Sasaniler arasında çatışma sebebi olmuştur. M.S. 395 yılına kadar Sasani sonra da Bizans egemenliğinde kalmıştır.
Hz. Osman zamanında Bizans'ı bozguna uğratan Müslüman orduları 644 yılında Van ve yöresini ele geçirmiş bu hakimiyet Emevi ve Abbasi devletleri tarafından da sürdürülmüştür. Eskiden beri Van bölgesinde yaşayan Ermeni azınlığı kısa bir süre Van çevresinde bir krallık kurmuş ve İslam İmparatorluğu'na tabi olmuşlardır. Hıristiyan sanatının mühim bir eseri olan Akdamar Kilisesi aynı adı taşıyan Ada üzerinde Kral Gagik tarafından 915-921 yılları arasında yaptırılmıştır.
Çağrı Bey döneminde Anadolu'ya keşif amaçlı yapılan seferler 1071 Malazgirt zaferiyle neticelenmiş Van ve çevresi Büyük Selçuklular'ın egemenliğine girmiştir. Büyük Selçuklular'dan sonra bir süre Eyyübi egemenliğinde kalan şehir 1230 yılında Karakoyunlular'ın hakimiyetine girmiştir. Bu tarihlerde eski Van şehrinde bulunan Ulu cami Karakoyunlu Yusuf tarafından yaptırılmıştır. Karakoyunlular'ın Uzun Hasan'a mağlup olmalarıyla Van ve havalisi Akkoyunluların eline geçmiştir.
Kanuni Sultan Süleyman döneminde Safevi Devleti'ni yenen Osmanlı orduları 1458'de Van'ı fethetti ve bu fetih 1555 yılında yapılan Amasya Antlaşması ile kesinlik kazanmıştır. Van Beyler Beyliği'ne atanan Hüsrev Paşa ve Kayaçelebizade Koçi Bey kendi adlarını taşıyan birer cami yaptırmışlardır. Aynı dönemlerde Kitap-ı Lugat-ı Vankulu adlı eser Vankulu Mehmet Efendi tarafından hazırlanmıştır.
XIX. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından sonra Van'da ekonomik bakımdan güçlü olan Ermeniler ihtilal cemiyetleri kurarak Ruslar'ın da desteğiyle silahlanmaya başlamış 1915'te bir çok kaza ve köyde katliama girmişlerdir. Aynı yıl Van'ı istila eden Ruslar Ermenileri destekleyerek şehri ateşe vermiş ve Osmanlı ahalisi şehri boşaltmak zorunda kalmıştır. 1918 yılında Van yıkılıp yıkılarak büyük oranda nüfus kaybına uğradığından bugünkü yerinde yeniden kurulmuştur.
Başlayan Türk harekatı karşısında işgal ettikleri topraklardan çekilen Ruslar ve Ermeniler doğudaki aşiretlerin de desteğiyle tamamen Anadolu'dan çıkarılmış ve Türk ordusu 2 Nisan 1918' de Van'a girerek şehri kurtarmıştır. 16 Mart 1921' de imzalanan Moskova antlaşması ile Ruslar Van ve Bitlis'e ait isteklerinden vazgeçmişlerdir. 29 Ekim 1923'te Vilayet merkezi olan Van'da Devlet ve Belediye tarafından alt yapı çalışmaları başlatılmış savaştan yakılıp yıkılan şehir yeniden inşa edilmiştir.
Van isminin Kaynağı
Bu konudaki bigiler tam olarak açıklığa kavuşturulmamış ve bu bilgiler rivayetlerden öteye gidememiştir. Evliya Çelebi Seyahatnamesinde Büyük İskender' in Van Kalesi'ndeki Vank adlı bir mabedden esinlenerek buraya Van adını verdiğini söylemektedir. Bir rivayete göre de şehri genişletilip güzelleştiren VAN isimli şahsın adından dolayı şehre bu ismi verilmiştir.
Bu konuda akla en yatkın görüş ise Urartuca Biane veya Viane'den çıkmış olduğudur. Çünkü Urartulular kendilerine Bianili demişler ve Urartuların hakim devrinde Biane adı altında birçok şehir ve insan topluluğu Van şehrinde toplanmıştır.

I decided to accompany my host father on his trucking trip through Turkey. We were joined by two of his friends for the trip. This was their first trip into Turkey for a pick up, and they were going in empty. We didn't know what to expect, but we figured being armed with English, German, Georgian, Russian, maps, and smart phones we'd be able to get by someway, somehow....
The first part of the trip took us along the beautiful Turkish Black Sea Coast. The second part brought us into the heart of eastern Turkey, almost to Syria, almost to the Mediterranean.
