STATEN ISLAND New York City Drone Video

Staten Island was first inhabited by the prehistoric Clovis Culture 14,000 years ago. By the time of European discovery, in 1520, the Native American Lenape people inhabited the lands. The Dutch settled here in 1609 and in 1729 the English setup Richmond Town here as the island's capitol. During the American Revolution, Staten Islanders were staunchly in favor of the crown and more than 1400 ships docked here as they prepared to attack. In 1898, Staten Island officially became part of New York City.

Staten Island's north shore is the most urban part of the island and includes historic neighborhoods, like St. George, Tompkinsville, Clifton and Stapleton. Definitely check out the St. Paul's Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, for amazing Victorian houses.

The east shore is home to the 2.5-mile F.D.R. Boardwalk, which is the fourth-longest boardwalk in the world. It contains numerous parks and monuments to the veterans of the World Wars, Korean War and Vietnam War. This part of the island contains some of the most beautiful park landscapes.

The island's south shore is home to the 17th-century Dutch and French Huguenot settlements from the 1960s. You can still find iconic sites throughout these neighborhoods and some of the best natural views New York City has to offer.

The West Shore is the least populated and most industrial part of the island. It contains the legendary Boat Graveyard, where more than 100 wood and metal boats from three centuries have their final resting place. This is one of NYC's most industrious areas.

Staten Island is an incredible place. It's a rural safe-haven in America's largest city and a reminder of where we've been and where we're going. It's most definitely worth a visit!

Discovered a Hidden Sri Lankan Buffet | Voted The Best Curry in NY in Staten Island

Very grateful to be able to enjoy a wonderful day in New York as a tourist, taking in the sights and more importantly, experiencing the great foods and the diversities of the cuisines found in the state. Today, I took a trip to Staten Island to see the great views of the New York skyline and to see the Statue of Liberty. And while the sights were impressive, I was ultimately thrilled to have found a hidden gem in Staten Island serving up what's voted as New York's best Sri Lankan curries! It keeps getting better because this is a buffet also; with an incredible value!

It's always fun and exciting experiencing new cuisines and the tastes and flavours of Sri Lanka certainly does not disappoint. And there's no better way to try all the foods and offerings than at a buffet where one can sample to theirs heart's desire! While cutlets, hoppers, kottus, and Wambatu moju may not be in ones culinary vocabulary at this point, there is a wonderful and satisfying way to remedy that at Lukruwana.

Lakruwana Restaurant in Staten Island offers their Sri Lankan buffet every Saturday and Sunday. For the incredible price of $16, this buffet offers incredible Sri Lankan favourites delivering deep and intense flavours in the best possible way.

Kentucky Ghost Towns Part 3 // Metcalfe County // Wisdom, Knob Lick, Sulphur Well, Alone

We head back to Kentucky to visit some very interesting towns in Metcalfe County. Since my last name is Wise, I had to visit Wisdom! Turns out a couple members of the band The Kentucky Headhunters grew up there. Knob Lick might make you chuckle (it did me as well). There's not a lot left, but I explain how it got it's name! Sulphur Well is actually a historic district, with a lot of interesting things to see and explore. Finally, we end up alone in Alone - where a cemetery is all that's left. I really had fun finding these tiny towns!

Daniel Boone Cabin from CBS Series Young Dan’l Boone

Located in eastern Tennessee and deep within the heart of the Appalachian Mountains is the Museum of Appalachia, and one of their most famous displays is the log cabin used in the CBS television series Young Dan'l Boone. This was a history lesson and a surprise to see how well this part of American film history was relocated and preserved for generations to come.

An unplanned visit to Seaview Hospital turns DANGEROUS ‼️

Okay.. so in the last video we were filming at the Farm Colony. It was very late at night and since it was close by, Hobie Katt & myself decided to go check out Seaview Hospital which is part of the Farm Colony area. This was a spur of the moment decision and as you will see, it highlights the real dangers of exploring abandoned buildings.. especially at night when visibility is at a minimum. In no way do I encourage or advocate anyone to put themselves in a precarious position. We claim full responsibility if we were seriously hurt Please exercise all caution when you are out there as ANYTHING can happen ????????

Seaview Hospital was a historic tuberculosis sanatorium, the complex was planned and built between 1905 and 1938 and was the largest and most costly municipal facility for the treatment of tuberculosis of its date in the United States.

The first buildings of the Staten Island Farm Colony were opened in 1909 and by 1915 the colony had merged with Seaview Hospital, collectively known as Seaview Farms. The LPC report surmises that this merge “probably resulted in improved services for the Farm Colony residents.” Seaview Hospital was built atop the former 25-acre hilltop estate of Charles Schmidt, which was known as “Ocean View.” According to the Commissioner of Public Charities at the time, the site was selected.

It was, at one time, the largest tuberculosis hospital at a time when fresh air was considered the most effective treatment of “the white plague.” The first drug trials leading to a cure for ‘consumption’ were made at Seaview Hospital.

Though the new facilities effectively eased the suffering of tuberculosis patients and provided housing for the poor, little could be done to actually save lives in the long term. Most eventually succumbed to the disease.

Later in years, with the cure found and new drug therapies proved successful in treating tuberculosis, Seaview shut its doors in 1961.
