TIRANA, ALBANIA | 8 BEST Things To Do In & Around Tirana
Tirana is located in central Albania and has been the country’s capital since 1920. And although it experienced political turmoil until 1991, the city has now evolved into the cultural and entertainment center of the country. Check out the Best Things to Do In & Around Tirana:
8. Free walking tour
The first and foremost thing you should do in Tirana is go on a free walking tour. During the 2.5 hour tour, you explore Tirana’s downtown area while learning about the city and country’s turbulent history, art, and everyday life. The tour runs every day from the Opera House.

7. Visit the New Bazaar
Tirana’s New Bazaar (Pazari ri Bazaar) is a newly renovated market that offers fresh fruits, vegetables, as well as souvenirs, local wine, and raki. Around the bazaar, you will find several bars and restaurants to drink and eat at. Many of these places are called ‘zgara’s’, which is a grill house.
6. Go on a day trip to Kruja
Located only 20 km north of Tirana, Kruja can easily be reached by public bus from the “South and North Albania Bus Terminal”. Kruja played a crucial role in the 15th century when it was the center of the Albanian opposition, led by the national hero Skanderbeg during the Ottoman invasion. Skenderbeg is still celebrated here today and there is even an entire museum dedicated to him. You can find this museum inside the beautiful castle that overlooks the town.
5. Wine & dine at Tirana Castle
Tirana also has its very own castle, located in the heart of the city. Only this fortress has been transformed into a commercial space, filled with restaurants, wine bars, art and souvenir shops. It’s actually a great place to have dinner with a glass of wine, and we found it quite affordable as well.
4. Explore Blloku
Another great area for entertainment in Tirana is Blloku. This small neighborhood really comes alive at night and is a trendy spot among locals. In addition to a variety of hip bars, night clubs, and cafés, you can also find some of the best restaurants in Tirana here.
3. Take the Dajti Ekspres
Located in the outskirts of Tirana, the Dajti Ekspres cable car takes you to Dajti National Park which is 1,613m above sea level. It’s easy to get to the cable car station by public bus. Once you’re in the cable car, the ride offers panoramic views of Tirana and the nature around it.

2. Visit Bunk’art
Bunk’art 1 is a large bunker with five levels, which was meant to be used by communist leader Hoxha and his regime in case of a nuclear attack. The bunker has now been converted into a museum, which covers the history of Albania’s past century in great detail. But it’s the preserved rooms, conceptual art, and sound effects that really bring the story to life.

Lake Bovilla is a stunning reservoir that lies within Dajti National Park. Surrounded by two mountain ranges, hiking is the best activity you can do here. Gamti Mountain offers the most spectacular views of the lake and doesn’t require any experience. There are even some man-made stairs that help you get to the top.

Top 10 Rides at Tibidabo Amusement Park
Tibidabo is a unique amusement park atop a mountain on the outskirts of Barcelona, Spain. This special setting allows it to offer some of the best views of any park in the world since you're looking down on the city. Many rides take advantage that location and there are several one-of-a-kind attractions here that should not be missed!

Day Trip to Badalona, Spain
David takes us on another adventure in the Spanish region of Catalunya (Catalonia) to the beachside town of Badalona. Just a metro ride away from Barcelona, Badalona offers a charming respite front the hustle and bustle of city life. In this episode David takes us around town to show us what to do on a day trip to Badalona. Hint: it involves two of David’s favorite things: history and food!
First stop is are the Roman ruins that Badalona is known for. In ancient times, Badalona was known as “Baetulo and Barcelona was known as “Barcino.” Both were large seaports with an extensive network of roads, residential quarters, and public buildings. The ruins of ancient Baetulo are housed within the Badalona Museum, located in the center of town at Plaça Assemblea de Catalunya, 1. The city dates back to the 1st century B.C., making it one of the oldest Roman settlements on the Iberian Peninsula!
Directions to Museum: Go the very end of L2 (the purple one) on the Metro at Badalona Pompeu Fabra. From the main exit go up hill to the next set of traffic lights and cross Avinguda de Martí Pujol and then go along Via Augusta for a couple of hundred metres. The Museum is on the corner of Via Agusta and Carrer de les Termes Romanes.
David takes us around the main exhibits of the museum, showing us the beautiful mosaics, old city walls, cardo maximus, and several artifacts uncovered at the site (pottery, coins, lamps, sculptures, and carvings). The Badalona Museum is especially interesting thanks to interactive displays and knowledgeable staff who provide detailed explanations about how Romans lived during that time.
A short walk from the museum is Casa Dels Dofins, a enclosed archaeological site containing the remains of a wealthy Roman “domus” or home. True to the architectural style of the time, all the rooms in the domus are centered around an atrium (courtyard). The name of the home, which means “house of the dolphins” comes from the dolphin mosaics found at the site. A walk around the Casa Dels Dofins exhibit reveals just how beautiful this house must have been during its Baetulo’s prime.
After so much history, David works up quite an appetite, so he heads to a popular seafood restaurant in town. With an endless supply of fresh fish from the Mediterranean, it is no wonder why La Donzella de la Costa restaurant is always packed. David tries some of the house specialties including razor clams, fried sardines and shrimp, octopus, monkfish filet, and a tasty seafood paella. Then he tops it all off with a dessert sampling of tarts and Crema Catalana (creme brûlée). Prices are reasonable and the view can’t be beat!
If it’s fun in the sun that you crave, Badalona has a gorgeous stretch of beach perfect for swimming and relaxing. The seafront promenade is lines with cafes, restaurants, and shops. So you see, there is much to hold you in Badalona for a day or two, which makes it a great day trip option from Barcelona.

In May, the occasion of the celebration of Saint Anastasi, the patron saint of Badalona, activities, and festivals are organized all around the city. The most important celebration takes place the day before Saint Anastasi Day when, at night, people gather at the maritime promenade to participate in the popular Cremada del Dimoni (Devil-Burning)--similar to the famous Valencian Falles.

Iberian cultures along with ancient Phoenician, Greek and Carthaginian settlements developed on the peninsula until it came under Roman rule around 200 BCE, after which the region was named Hispania, based on the earlier Phoenician name Sp(a)n or Spania.[10] At the end of the Western Roman Empire the Germanic tribal confederations in migration from Central Europe invaded the Iberian peninsula and established themselves in relatively independent realms in its western provinces. The Visigoths migrating from Eastern Europe were allowed to settle in federated status in the neighbor province of Aquitania in 511, with the treaty obligations among others to assist the Empire with military allied support to expeditions defending its provinces in the West. And so they did in Gaul against Franks, Burgundians and the Sueves, Alans and Vandals depredations in the Iberian peninsula. The military campaigns success against the Vandals and Alans was so sounded that their dominion over the provinces of Betica and Carthaginensis were ended and they restored to the Empire. Both would unite and eventually leave the peninsula for Africa to form the Vandal kingdom. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Goths established the independent Kingdom of Toulouse expanding their domination over the extant Roman provinces in Gaul and Hispania. They took immediate military control of the Narbonensis, Auvergne and Provence and in the peninsula, the Tarraconensis and Carthaginensis from local provincial authorities, and wrestled control of Baetica and Lusitania from the Suebian Kingdom, placing a match to their expansion and passing to be the dominant power in the peninsula regardless of Byzantines and Frankish and Burgundians later incursions or dominion in parts the peninsula. The Suebian kingdom, some independent Hispano-Roman local regions and the Byzantines provincial realm in the peninsula, would be integrated by force into the successor Kingdom of Toledo that more or less unified politically, ecclesiastically and legally all the former Roman provinces or successor kingdoms of what was then known in documents as Hispania.
