10 Most Hated Towns in England

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Newbury, Berkshire! (2023) #NEWBURY

A visit to the busy town of Newbury in Berkshire on a chilly February day.

Newbury is a market town in the county of Berkshire, England, and is home to the administrative headquarters of West Berkshire Council. The town centre around its large market square retains a rare medieval Cloth Hall, an adjoining half timbered granary, and the 15th-century St Nicolas Church, along with 17th- and 18th-century listed buildings.

Newbury lies on the edge of the Berkshire Downs; part of the North Wessex Downs Area of outstanding natural beauty, 3 mi (5 km) north of the Hampshire-Berkshire county boundary. In the suburban village of Donnington lies the part-ruined Donnington Castle and the surrounding hills are home to some of the country's most famous racehorse training grounds (centred on nearby Lambourn). To the south is a narrower range of hills including Walbury Hill and a few private landscape gardens and mansions, such as Highclere Castle. The local economy is inter-related to that of the eastern M4 corridor, which has most of its industrial, logistical and research businesses close to Newbury, mostly around Reading, Bracknell, Maidenhead and Slough. Together with the adjoining town of Thatcham, 3 mi (5 km) distant, Newbury forms the principal part of an urban area of approximately 70,000 people.

Currency

Britain’s currency is the pound sterling (£), which is divided into 100 pence (p).

Scotland has its own pound sterling notes. These represent the same value as an English note and can be used elsewhere in Britain. The Scottish £1 note is not accepted outside Scotland.

There are lots of bureaux de change in Britain – often located inside:

• banks
• travel agents
• Post Offices
• airports
• major train stations.

It's worth shopping around to get the best deal and remember to ask how much commission is charged.

Passport And Visas Requirements To Enter The UK

Please note: Following the recent referendum vote for the UK to leave the European Union (EU), there are currently no changes in the way people travel to Britain. The following guidelines still apply:

If you're planning an adventure to the UK, depending on your nationality and your reason for visiting, you may need to organise a visa.

If you're an American, Canadian or Australian tourist, you'll be able to travel visa-free throughout the UK, providing you have a valid passport and your reason for visiting meets the immigration rules (link is external).

Citizens from some South American and Caribbean countries as well as Japan are also able to travel visa-free around the UK.

European Union citizens, non-EU member states of the EEA (Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland), Switzerland, and members of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT) do not need a visa to enter the UK.

If you have any further visa questions visit the official UK government website.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The idyllic market town of Newbury sits in the very heart of rural Berkshire. Steeped in history and surrounded by some of the UK’s most outstandingly beautiful countryside, Newbury offers a relaxing yet vibrant atmosphere in which to enjoy its array of independent and high street shops and restaurants, charter and specialist markets, and first-class arts and cultural experiences.

Newbury is home to some of the most stunning walking and cycling trails in the South of England, including the tow path along the Kennet & Avon Canal which passes directly through the town centre. It’s also the home of Newbury Racecourse, Donnington Castle, the Corn Exchange and The Watermill Theatre, and nearby Highclere Castle (of Downton Abbey fame!).

Newbury Walking Tour

Newbury is a market town in the county of Berkshire, England, which is home to the administrative headquarters of West Berkshire Council.

The town centre around its large market square retains a rare medieval Cloth Hall, an adjoining half timbered granary, and the 15th-century St Nicolas Church, along with 17th- and 18th-century listed buildings. As well as being home to Newbury Racecourse, it is the headquarters of Vodafone and software company Micro Focus International.

There was a Mesolithic settlement at Newbury. Artefacts were recovered from the Greenham Dairy Farm in 1963, and the Faraday Road site in 2002. Additional material was found in excavations along the route of the Newbury Bypass.

Newbury was founded late in the 11th century following the Norman conquest as a new borough, hence its name. Although there are references to the borough that predate the Domesday Survey it is not mentioned by name in the survey. However, its existence within the manor of Ulvritone is evident from the massive rise in value of that manor at a time when most manors were worth less than in Saxon times. In 1086 the Domesday Book[5] assesses the borough as having land for 12 ploughs, 2 mills, woodland for 25 pigs, 11 villeins (resident farmhands, unfree peasant who owed his lord labour services), 11 bordars (unfree peasants with less land than villans/villeins), and 51 enclosures (private parks) rendering 70s 7d.

Doubt has been cast over the existence of Newbury Castle, but the town did have royal connections and was visited a number of times by King John and Henry III while hunting in the area.

Thatcham Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Berkshire, and around 15 miles west, and slightly south, of Reading, is the town of Thatcham.

Thatcham is one of a handful of towns that claim to be the oldest continuously inhabited place in Britain. Remains of a Mesolithic settlement dating from 8400 to 7700 BCE have been discovered here, as well as evidence of Bronze and Iron Age settlements.

It is believed that a market was operating in Thatcham by 1135, and was thriving by the early 14th century. Around the year 1140 St Mary's Church was founded, allegedly on the site of an older Saxon church from the 7th century.

Due to its location along the historic Bath Road, Thatcham was once home to a series of coaching inns. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, trips between London and Bath would take multiple days by stagecoach, and would involve stopovers at places like Thatcham to change the horses and provide rest and refreshment for the passengers.

In 1847 the railway arrived in Thatcham, initially as part of the Berks and Hants Line to Hungerford. Today it is situated on the Reading-Taunton Line.

Staying at a B&B (Bed & Breakfast) in England

To really see England, it's best to get out of the cities and explore the gorgeous countryside. B and B's such as Thruxted Oust in Chartham devote themselves to the absolute and supreme comfort of guests, with breakfasts created from produce grown in the yard where you are also invited to relax. B and B's present a comparatively inexpensive accommodation choice.
