Bloemfontein fountain of flowers or blooming fountain; also known as Bloem) is the capital city of the province of Free State of South Africa; and, as the judicial capital of the nation, one of South Africa's three national capitals (the other two being Cape Town, the legislative capital, and Pretoria, the administrative capital) and is the seventh largest city in South Africa.

The city of Bloemfontein hosts the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa, the Franklin Game Reserve, Naval Hill, the Maselspoort Resort and the Sand du Plessis Theatre. The city hosts numerous museums, including the National Women's Monument, the Anglo-Boer War Museum, the National Museum, and the Oliewenhuis Art Museum. Bloemfontein is located in central South Africa on the southern edge of the Highveld at an elevation of 1,400 metres (4,600 ft), bordering on the semi-arid region of the Karoo. The area is generally flat with occasional hills (koppies in Afrikaans) and the general vegetation is Highveld grassland. S1 - Ep 13 – Matjiesfontein, what a historic little town!

To continue our travels around the country we had to go back to Prince Albert where we left off in the last episode. On our way there we stopped off at Matjiesfontein. This historic town situated along the N1 is a must visit. This little town was able to give us a few meters of gravel road to travel on, which is always our goal, some gravel road somewhere. #dustbugs #travel #southafrica #travelsouthafrica

S1 – Ep 277 – Augrabies – Our Visit to the Town and the Falls!

On our journey to Augrabies, we took a moment to pause at Lake Grappa Guest Farm & Ski School, a tranquil and picturesque man-made waterskiing lake. The serene setting provided is perfect for outdoor adventure enthusiasts to try their hand at waterskiing. As we resumed our journey towards the town of Augrabies, we decided to pay the Augrabies Falls National Park a visit to see the falls, which we haven’t seen in many years. To see the sheer force of the water cascading down the rocky outcrops was awe-inspiring, and we couldn't help but pause to marvel at the natural wonder and it was not even in flood at the time of our visit. We then stopped off for a quick walk around at the Augrabies Falls Lodge and Camp, nestled in the heart of the surrounding wilderness. This place would be the perfect retreat after a long day's adventure. The town of Augrabies, situated nearby, provided us with a look into how the locals lived. It was great visit to the Augrabies area. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #augrabies

S1 - Ep 14 - Going over the Swartberg Pass in the rain!

Our plan was to travel up the Swartberg Pass and show you its beauty but little did we know that it would be so special in the mist and rain. The gravel roads and the switchbacks up the mountain were mind blowing. We can just imagine what it would look like in the sunshine. This just gives another opportunity to come back to the Swartberg Pass. #dustbugs #travel #southafrica #travelsouthafrica

S1 - Ep 06 - Sutherland - The ideal location for stargazing!

After a long day of travel on gravel roads to a farm just outside of Sutherland South Africa and a good night’s rest we couldn’t decide if we should go to Fraserburg or the Karoo National Park in Beaufort West. The big question was though, how can we travel to Sutherland and not visit SALT the Southern African Large Telescope at the Astronomical Observatory. This is really the ideal location for stargazing. #dustbugs #travel #southafrica #astronomy #observatory #sutherland

We go in Search of Snow in the Outeniqua Mountains near George on the Garden Route in South Africa.

We go in search of snow in the Outeniqua Mountains near George on the Garden Route in South Africa. Unlike in many parts of the world, snow in South Africa is a relatively rare occurrence, so when it does snow it creates a fair bit of excitement. After a cold front came rumbling down the coast, it dumped some snow on the high peaks of the Outeniqua Mountains just outside the city of George on the Garden Route in the Western Cape.

It was pouring with rain as we jumped into the car and headed up into the mountains, via the historical Montagu Pass, to see if we could reach the snow to photograph it. And, while the rain was (and still is) desperately needed, it didn't do much for our chances of finding any snow.

Montagu Pass was built in the early 1940s by an Australian, Henry Fancourt White, with a team of about 250 convicts. It replaced the old and treacherous Cradock Pass that was used by ox wagons, transport riders and horsemen at the time.

Our day job is wildlife, travel and lodge photography - ebiking is a wonderful sport that keeps us fit and satisfies our need to explore the remote backroads of South Africa.

The Tropic of Capricorn 6 of 20 - South Africa - BBC Travel Documentary

The Tropic of Capricorn 6 of 20 - South Africa - BBC Travel Documentary, recorded 14.03.2009

Simon Reeve presents a travel documentary as embarks on a journey along the Tropic of Capricorn, the line of latitude which cuts through Southern Africa, Australia and South America.

In the four-part BBC2 series Tropic of Capricorn, broadcast in 2008, Simon followed the southern border of the tropics region around the world.

While filming Tropic of Capricorn, Simon travelled through Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil.

The journey took him to stunning areas of the world, but it was also a chance for spontaneous discoveries about the changing global environment, poverty, globalisation, AIDS, the rise of the Chinese economy and the suffering of Africa.

Steam Safari Sampler

Steam Safari

Over many years, South Africa established an enviable reputation with steam enthusiasts. Steam usage continued until a relatively late stage, and trains were operated on routes that often ran through attractive scenery. Add to this widespread industrial steam operation, coupled with a pleasant climate and management that was sympathetic to enthusiasts, and it is easy to see the attraction.

By 2010, when this programme was made, the situation was not so good. Many locomotives had been mothballed with a view to preservation, but they were generally stored outdoors, were steadily rusting away and were prey to metal thieves, with negligible chance of restoration. Moreover, Transnet, the state-owned infrastructure company, seemed ever less willing to countenance the operation of steam trains on the national rail system.

Against this rather depressing backdrop it is good to note that South Africa still has much to offer the enthusiast, and this programme contains striking steam footage taken at many locations, including Friends of the Rail in Pretoria and Reefsteamers in Johannesburg. Trains were filmed on the open line at Creighton and at nearby Ixopo in Kwazulu Natal, and we also traverse the narrow gauge Port Elizabeth system westwards as far as Loerie behind an NG15. Some archive footage of how things “used to be” has also been included

A key development in recent years has been the growth of the Sandstone Heritage Trust near Fouriesburg in the Free State as a preservation centre. The Trust has acquired a vast collection and is steadily building up a fleet of working steam locos. A picturesque 26 kilometre “mainline” for the narrow-gauge items offers unrivalled photographic opportunities, and this on its own provides justification for a visit to South Africa.

This wide-screen production is indexed by menu and lasts for 70 minutes.
