Tachilek Myanmar used to be a dangerous zone and also known as Golden Traiangle just next to Mae Sai in Thailand. I took a mortar bike taxi and had a very delicious lunch.

A Tourist's Guide to Tachileik, Myanmar

PART 2 of our Northern Thailand roadtrip 2017

Colin and I park the bikes in the Thai town of Mae Sai and cross over the Friendship bridge between Thailand and Myanmar. On the other side is the border town of Tachileik.

After securing the services of a friendly tuk-tuk driver, we head out to see the see the temples, meet some monks and generally have a great time.

Tachileik is a town in the Shan State of Myanmar, located on the border with Thailand.
The town has a population of around 120,000 people and is situated on the banks of the Mae Sai River.
Tachileik is known for its bustling markets, which sell a wide variety of goods including textiles, electronics, and food.
The town has a unique mix of cultures, with Thai, Chinese, Burmese, and other ethnic groups living and working together.
Tachileik is a major trading hub for the region, with goods flowing in and out of the town from neighboring countries such as China, Thailand, and Laos.
The town is also a popular destination for tourists who come to explore the nearby Golden Triangle, which is known for its opium production and was once a major center for the drug trade.
Tachileik has a tropical climate, with hot and humid summers and cooler winters. The monsoon season runs from May to October, bringing heavy rain and occasional flooding.
The town is home to several Buddhist temples, including the Shwedagon Pagoda, which is a replica of the famous temple in Yangon.
The nearest airport to Tachileik is in the city of Kengtung, which is around 50 kilometers away.
Tachileik is connected to the rest of Myanmar by a major highway that runs to the city of Mandalay, as well as by smaller roads that link it to nearby towns and villages.

Thai Visa run border crossing from Mae Sai, Thailand to Tachilek, Myanmar (Burma) Travel Video

Our latest travel video adventures had us waking up early in Chiang Mai to board a crammed van en route to Mae Si, Thailand for a Thai Visa run border crossing with Tachilek, Myanmar (Burma). Packed tightly like sardines in this tiny little van - with faulty air conditioning - we set off on a full day trip to receive a new entry stamp back into Thailand. Audrey and I both couldn't believe our full month in Thailand had already expired; it felt just like yesterday that we arrived at Don Muang Airport in Northern Bangkok. Our van was full of other farangs (Thai for foreigners) in a similar predicament. None of us were taking this trip to explore the frontier areas of Northern Thailand/Myanmar. Our mission was quite clear; our Thai visas had expired and we had to all renew them.

If feeling cramped and uncomfortably hot wasn't quite enough to deal with, our driver chipped in with his best efforts to accentuate the situation by driving like a kamikaze pilot on a suicide mission. We were both beyond relieved when we finally arrived at Mae Sai to cross the border over to Tachilek, Myanmar.

The process was easy as pie. I really wish all immigration procedures were this simple and efficient. After receiving our exit stamp on the Thai side we entered Myanmar immigration where we paid 500 Baht, had our photos taken and were given a temporary ID card that allowed us to roam around in this Burmese border town.

Having only one hour to complete this entire process we were rushed for time and only briefly had the opportunity to explore Burma. Touts and aggressive street vendors tried to peddle us cartons of cigarettes and Viagra. Although, I'm no longer a wet behind the ears backpacker, I hope I'm not at the stage where it appears I need a libido booster :P

Without time to have a proper sit down meal, I randomly bought some deep fried snacks from a Burmese street food vendor with limited English and/or Thai. Luckily, it only came to 10 Baht (roughly 0.33 USD).

Once we crossed the border back into Thailand we literally had only 15 minutes to grab a bite to eat. We quickly found the closest Thai restaurants which had wifi. Mistaking when my team (the Chicago Blackhawks) played in the Stanley Cup finals we were on the bus when they were taking on the Boston Bruins. With more excitement that a child ready to open a birthday present on Christmas, I rushed to check the score. Sweat dripped from my eyebrow as I had an uneasy feeling in my stomach. As the page slowly loaded an image of a celebrating Blackhawk flooded the screen. I leaped up off of my seat and did a fist pump in the air. They won the game!

On the entire ride back to Chiang Mai I was over the moon. I was excited my team won I hardly even noticed how crazy things were on the road:

Chiang Rai to Mae Sai to Tachileik (Myanmar)

Chiang Rai to Mae Sai to Tachileik (Myanmar), April 2011

I started my trip in Chiang Rai Bus Station
Buses depart every 30 mins or so for Mae Sai. The fare is 39 baht for the 65 Km trip that takes about 1 ½ hours. Buses are quite basic but depart on time, leaving half full but quickly filling up along the way.

On arrival in Mae Sai there are Songthaew waiting to take you to the Myanmar border. A Songthaew cost 15 Baht to the bridge and border crossing into Myanmar

There is a busy market area around the border crossing on the Thailand side. A steady flow of assorted vehicles passes from Thailand into Myanmar.

The Immigration process on the Thai side is straight forward, then a short walk over the bridge to Myanmar Immigration. Half way across the bridge the traffic flow changes from left to right.

Myanmar Immigration is not as well sign posted or organised. The entrance to Immigration is hidden behind a curtain under the Passport Only sign. You fill in the forms and pay US$10 and are issued with a temporary entry and your passport kept.

The main market area in Tachileik is immediately to the right, after the bridge, and has an enormous range of goods are available. A lively market, popular with Thai's and Farang tourists

Counterfeited goods are very popular. Lots of mobile phones, watches and handbags. The handbags were very good copies and about 1/4 the cost to Bangkok (at MBK).

When it's time to leave, head back over the bridge again, follow the signs wind along the path to where you exchange you temporary visa for your passport. Cross the bridge again and head back into Thailand, remembering that Thailand issues only 15 day entry permits at land crossings.

Thailand to Myanmar by LUXURY bus (Myanmar border crossing) | Chiang Mai to Hpa-an

Today we travelled overland from Thailand to Myanmar. We took a luxury bus from Chiang Mai to Mae Sot in Thailand before crossing the border to Myanmar by foot. We had our Myanmar visa ahead of time so the border crossing was simple. We then haggled for a taxi to take us to Hpa-an which was a little less luxurious!

The whole journey took over 12 hours!

Lost Smile.Umbrella girl in Tachileik Myanmar 2018 - 4K 60FPS HDR

Tachileik city in Myanmar is also known as a Golden Triangle city which is next to Mae Sai district in Thailand. You can cross the border on foot and have one day trip from Thailand. At the temple, a girl made shade with her umbrella for me. In Myanmar, sometimes I saw them at temples because having a job is really difficult.Especially in country side.I really felt that the girl was not happy with what she does because she never smiled and looked so sad.If you happen to see them, please do not get angry but smile with little your help. Later on,her mother asked me to buy post card and some souvenirs (Not expensive). I hope Myanmar economy goes up and happy life comes.
