Il qat è una pianta assai diffusa nella Penisola Arabica e coltivata in particolare nel territorio dello Yemen. Infatti le sue foglie, contenenti un alcaloide dall’azione stimolante, vengono abitualmente masticate dalla popolazione e trattenute in bocca dalla mattina fino alla sera, in quanto provocano stati di euforia, una riduzione della fatica, ma allo stesso tempo anche forme di dipendenza, tanto che l’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità nel 1980 ha classificato il qat come una vera e propria droga. Il nostro viaggio prosegue raggiungendo Jibla, una cittadina dal carattere fiabesco, sita a circa 2.200 metri d’altezza nel sud-ovest dello Yemen. La sua importanza storica è legata alla regina Arwa che qui fece costruire il suo palazzo, purtroppo oggi in rovina e alla presenza della grande moschea di Jibla, che custodisce le spoglie della regina e che rappresenta tra l’altro una delle moschee più antiche e belle del paese. A seguire ci si sposta a Ta’izz, una grande città collocata ad una quota di circa 1.400 metri sul livello del mare, nel sud-ovest dello Yemen, caratterizzata da vecchi quartieri con abitazioni tipiche in mattoni marroni e moschee solitamente di colore bianco. Inoltre Ta’izz è famosa per essere la più grande base industriale dell’area yemenita. Nella pianura costiera occidentale dello Yemen, si trova invece la città santa di Zabid, tipico esempio di architettura classica araba, ricca di ben 86 moschee e costruzioni in mattoni, in cui sono visibili intagli, nicchie e decorazioni, che testimoniano il suo antico splendore. Anche il regista italiano Pier Paolo Pasolini rimase affascinato da questa realtà, tanto che decise di ambientare qui alcune scene del film “Il fiore delle mille e una notte”. Nonostante la città vanti la più antica università islamica del mondo, sta purtroppo attraversando una fase crescente di decadenza, accentuata dalla crisi economica dominante nello Yemen.

YEMEN 1988
Yemen, antica terra della regina di Saba e forse anche del mitico paradiso terrestre, l'Eden. Luogo con più di 4000 anni di storia, ora rischia di diventare un altro paradiso perduto a causa di continue guerre che lo stanno divorando.
Le foto che seguono sono il frutto di un viaggio fatto nell'allora Yemen del Nord, alla fine degli anni ottanta, una trentina di anni fa. Anche questo un viaggio avventuroso che ora difficilmente affronterei di nuovo anche se, a dire il vero, alle spalle avevamo un'organizzazione professionale.
E' stata un'esperienza indimenticabile, luoghi che furono la culla della civiltà, un'architettura affascinante, ogni pietra ricca di storia, paesaggi fiabeschi, colori, profumi, odori e ........ gente armata ovunque, posti di blocco, strade impossibili che si snodavano su pendii di montagne altissime e un autista che masticava continuamente qat, insomma, un viaggio ad alto contenuto di adrenalina.
Il qat, per chi non lo sapesse, è un arbusto le cui foglie contengono una sostanza analoga alle anfetamine, quindi stimolante, che dà forza e fa passare la stanchezza, un po' come la cocaina, ma a lungo andare provoca dei danni importanti; il guaio è che masticare qat è diventato un fatto sociale che ha recato gravi danni economici al Paese con perdita di tempo, di denaro e di suolo destinato a questa coltivazione.
Ma veniamo al viaggio e a quello che, io e miei amici, abbiamo visto. E' sicuramente l'architettura la prima cosa che colpisce di più: gli edifici e le città sembrano usciti da un libro di fiabe....il fiore delle Mille e una notte, appunto!
Pier Paolo Pasolini nello Yemen ambientò uno dei suoi capolavori e descrisse così questo Paese:
.......architettonicamente, è il paese più bello del mondo. Sana'a, la capitale, è una Venezia selvaggia sulla polvere senza San Marco e senza la Giudecca, una città-forma, la cui bellezza non risiede nei deperibili monumenti, ma nell'incompatibile disegno.....è uno dei miei sogni...

Yemen, ancient land of the queen of Sheba and perhaps also of the mythical paradise on earth, Eden. A place with more than 4000 years of history, it is now in danger of becoming another paradise lost due to continuous wars that are devouring it.
The following photos are the result of a journey made in the then North Yemen, at the end of the eighties, about thirty years ago. This is also an adventurous journey that I would hardly undertake again now even if, to tell the truth, we had a professional organization behind us.
It was an unforgettable experience, places that were the cradle of civilization, a fascinating architecture, each stone rich in history, fairytale landscapes, colors, scents, smells and ........ armed people everywhere, places of block, impossible roads that wound on the slopes of very high mountains and a driver who constantly chewed qat, in short, a journey with a high adrenaline content.
The qat, for the uninitiated, is a shrub whose leaves contain a substance similar to amphetamines, therefore stimulating, which gives strength and makes tiredness go away, a bit like cocaine, but in the long run it causes significant damage; the trouble is that chewing qat has become a social fact that has caused serious economic damage to the country with the loss of time, money and land destined for this cultivation.
But let's get to the trip and what my friends and I saw. The architecture is certainly the first thing that strikes you the most: the buildings and the cities seem straight out of a storybook .... the flower of the Thousand and One Nights, in fact!
Pier Paolo Pasolini in Yemen set one of his masterpieces and described this country as follows:
....... architecturally, it is the most beautiful country in the world. Sana'a, the capital, is a wild Venice on the dust without San Marco and without Giudecca, a city-form, whose beauty does not lie in its perishable monuments, but in the incompatible design ..... it's one of my dreams ...

Dwellings Outside Ta'izz
Just outside Ta'izz, in the Yemen. Including an Akdam slum, the Untouchables of Yemen, descendants of Arican slaves, still seen as servants for the most menial jobs in Yemen, not associated with, and largely ignored by the population of Yemen.

Anchorage at Al Mukallah/Yemen
1st stop in Yemen from Oman, Al Mukallah. We had planned on passing this stop, but SV Shiraz wanted to stop to top off on fuel in case we had to motor all the way to Aden. Turns out leaving here we had great following winds that we sailed all the way to Aden with full fuel tanks. A port that is never visited, but locals super friendly and all yell hello.
