Swadlincote is a town in Derbyshire, England, close to the borders with Leicestershire and Staffordshire. It is located approximately 5 miles southeast of Burton-upon-Trent, 5 miles northwest of Ashby-de-la-Zouch and 12.5 miles due south of Derby. It is an unparished area in the South Derbyshire district, of which it is the largest town and administrative centre.
Swadlincote consists of the settlements of Swadlincote itself plus the districts of Newhall and Midway, and the contiguous suburban villages of Church Gresley and Woodville. The village of Castle Gresley is situated less than 2 miles (3 km) to the southwest and the community of Albert Village lies 1.5 miles (2 km) to the south, just within Leicestershire.
Swadlincote's name is derived from the Old English Swartlings Cottas, Swartling being a man's name and cottas meaning cottages. Past forms of the name include Sivardingescote and Swartlincote. Swadlincote residents often shorten its name to Swad. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded Swadlincote as a small manor. It was part of the parish of Gresley (latterly Church Gresley) until the 19th century.
Swadlincote has a moderate-sized town centre, typical of those in the Midlands, containing national chain stores including Boots and small local businesses. It had a branch of Somerfield before the Co-operative Group took over that chain in 2009. Swadlincote had a Woolworths until the chain ceased trading in 2009. Alworths took over Woolworths' former Swadlincote branch but this too subsequently closed. The opening of a large Morrisons store on Coppice Side has been blamed for the closure of a number of small independent shops in the town. Shops that lined West Street and High Street from 1901 disappeared by the early 21st century. Hepworth Retail Park is a fairly modern development which contains a restaurant, cinema and various shops.
Swadlincote is near the junction of the A514 (Derby to A444) and A511 (Burton-upon-Trent to Ashby-de-la-Zouch) roads. In 1804 the Ashby Canal was opened. Its northern terminus was at Moira, Leicestershire and it built tramways to carry coal and ceramics from Swadlincote and elsewhere to the canal for shipment. The Midland Railway opened its Leicester to Burton upon Trent Line through Gresley in 1845 and opened Gresley railway station to serve the area. The company later built a branch line through Swadlincote itself and neighbouring Woodville. In 1947 the passenger services were withdrawn from both lines, and British Railways closed Gresley railway station in 1964.
Swadlincote is served by the Arriva Midlands and Midland Classic bus companies. Swadlincote is also on National Cycle Network Route 63. Although currently under development, the route is signed from Civic Way through to Church Gresley via Maurice Lea Park with onward links to the heart of the National Forest. The main attractions within the boundaries of Swadlincote are the local parks such as Maurice Lea at Church Gresley and Eureka, the Green Bank Leisure Centre, the large dry ski slope and the '50s American Diner, the largest American diner in the United Kingdom, all within reach of the town centre. The town has one museum: Sharpe's Pottery Centre, a visitor centre that tells people of the town's pottery heritage. There is a café and the town's Tourist Information Centre. Gresley F.C., formerly Gresley Rovers, is a semi-professional football team based at Moat Street, Church Gresley.

Burton-on-Trent Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located roughly halfway between Birmingham and Nottingham, in the county of Staffordshire, is the town of Burton-on-Trent.
Burton proudly boasts over a thousand years of experience in the brewing industry. This allegedly originated in a benedictine abbey, circa 1004 AD. The first record of brewing after the dissolution of the monasteries comes from 1708, when Benjamin Printon founded a small brewery. Many notable names followed, including Worthington's, Bass, Marston's, Ind Coope's and Boddingtons to name just a few.
In 1712 George Hayne created the Trent Navigation - basically a means of making the River Trent navigable by big boats. What this meant is that ale from Burton-on-Trent could be transported all the way to the River Humber (as the Trent is a tributary of the Humber), where it reached Hull before being exported overseas. This secured Burton's role as a powerhouse of beer production. In 1777 the Trent and Mersey Canal was completed, allowing access to further domestic trades routes.
The 19th century saw the arrival of the railway in 1839 with a line operated by Midland Railway. By 1880 there were over 30 breweries in Burton-on-Trent, with around one quarter of all beer sold in Britain produced here. By 1928 Burton's breweries had fallen to eight. By 1980 only Bass, Ind Coope's and Marston's remained. In 1922 Branston Pickle was first made in the suburban village of the same name, Branston, 2 miles southwest of Burton town centre.
Today the only remaining independent brewer in Burton-on-Trent is Burton Bridge Brewery. The imposing building we see at the end of the video is owned by Molson Coors Brewing Company, a North American merger who bought out Bass in 2002.
Finally it should be noted that some prominent outlets call the town Burton-upon-Trent, including Google and Wikipedia. Whereas others including Royal Mail and National Rail refer to it as Burton-on-Trent (I omitted the hyphens until now for SEO reasons). I've always assumed the latter, but if any Burtonians are reading this, I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments on the two different names!

Ashford, Kent Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Kent, and around 15 miles southwest of Canterbury, is the town of Ashford (not to be confused with the town of Ashford in Surrey!)
The origins of Ashford can be traced back to 893 AD when a settlement was established here by Saxons escaping a Viking raid. The name is derived from Old English 'æscet', meaning ash trees and 'ford', meaning shallow river crossing. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it is recorded as 'Essetesford'.
In 1243 a market charter was granted to Ashford by Henry III. Early industry in the town included agriculture and pottery. During the late 13th century, St Mary the Virgin Church was built, and stands at the very centre of the town to this day, although much of the building was restored in the 15th century including the 37-metre/120ft tower. The church is Grade I listed.
From the mid-19th century the rail industry would transform Ashford. It began in 1842 with the opening of its first station. It was situated on a line between London and Folkestone. Further lines to Canterbury, Hastings and Maidstone were added, making Ashford a junction station. In 1847 the Ashford locomotive works was built by the South Eastern Railway. This brought hundreds of jobs into the town. To keep up with the influx of workers, an area known as Alfred Town was established just southeast of the town centre, which later became known as New Town. At its peak around 1300 people were employed by the works. The locomotive workshops would eventually close in 1962 although it wasn't until the early 1980s that the railway works closed altogether.
In 1919 a British Mark IV tank was presented to the town in recognition of its response to the National War Savings appeal. It was delivered by rail and met by a Tanks Corps Crew who drove it to St George's Square where it has remained ever since.
In 1994 work began on rebuilding Ashford's station into what would become Ashford International. This would feature two separate areas: one for domestic trains and one for trains coming to and from mainland Europe via the then brand new Eurostar. In 2003 section 1 of High Speed 1 connected London with the Channel Tunnel. In 2007 section 2 opened, along with Ebbsfleet International Station, which is situated around 35 miles northwest of Ashford. The opening of Ebbsfleet International caused a reduction in services from Ashford to Paris from 12 a day to just three, plus a daily service to Disneyland. In September 2020 it was announced that, due to a decline in ticket sales following the pandemic, both Ashford and Ebbsfleet would suspend their Eurostar services until further notice. At the time of writing (June 2022), the latest estimate is 2023 at the earliest. On a more positive note, there are frequent high speed trains running to London St Pancras, taking just under 40 minutes, so travel to the continent by rail is still possible. These trains also make Ashford a viable commuter town for those working in the capital.

Waterlooville is a town in Hampshire, England, approximately 8 miles north of Portsmouth. The town is surrounded by Purbrook, Blendworth, Cowplain, Lovedean, Clanfield, Catherington, Crookhorn, Denmead, Hambledon, Horndean and Widley. It forms part of the South Hampshire conurbation. The town formed around the old A3 London to Portsmouth road. Waterlooville is twinned with Maurepas, Yvelines in France and Henstedt-Ulzburg in Germany.
The main shopping precinct is served by First Hampshire & Dorset bus routes 7/X7, 8, The X9 route has been discontinued and replaced by the D1 and D2 service which runs from Hambledon and Denmead and goes to Waterlooville town centre, and Stagecoach South services 37 and 39. The A3 Bus Corridor priority route (constructed between 2003–2007) serves the town. As of 2006, the shopping precinct is closed to all road traffic other than buses.
The nearest train station is located in Bedhampton and is on the main train route between London and Portsmouth. For a time, South West Trains provided a direct bus link to Petersfield railway station via Horndean, enabling quick access to fast London-bound trains, but now the link to Petersfield is Stagecoach service 37 via Clanfield. Havant railway station is served by Stagecoach service 39, and stations in Portsmouth by First services 7/X7, 8 and X9. For westbound trains the station at Cosham, served by the local bus services, is on the line between Portsmouth and Fareham, with regular trains to Southampton and Cardiff.
According to local legend, many of them settled there. There is no proof of this assertion. The pub was thereafter renamed in their honour and the area around the pub became known as Waterlooville. The original Heroes pub was at a crossroads near the main bus-stop. It was demolished in 1966 and replaced with a bank; a new pub took the same name and is located at the northern end of the shopping precinct.
Near the town centre is the rebuilt St George's church. During the 1950s and 1960s the surrounding area saw extensive growth in housing, when large suburban public and private housing estates were constructed. This resulted in the original Victorian church failing to cope with the population growth. Plans for a new church were started and in 1970 the new church was built on the site of the old church. Parts of the old church were retained.

Coalville Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Leicestershire, and around 12 miles northwest of Leicester, is the town of Coalville.
The origins of Coalville go back to the year 1824 when engineer William Stenson opened a deep mine on the edge of Whitwick parish, calling it Whitwick Colliery. A small settlement grew around it, providing housing for his workers.
In 1830 Stenson enlisted the help of steam locomotive pioneer George Stephenson and his son Robert to build the Leicester and Swannington Railway. George Stephenson sunk two collieries here, named Snibston Number 1 and Snibston Number 2.
With the opening of the coal mines and the railway station, the Leicester Chronicle printed the following in 1833 alluding to the origin of the town's name: Owing to the traffic which has been produced by the Railway and New Collieries on Whitwick Waste, land which 20 years ago would not have fetched £20 per acre (£50 per hectare), is now selling in lots at from £400 to £500 per acre (£1,000 to £1,200 per hectare), for building upon. The high chimneys, and numerous erections upon the spot, give the neighbourhood quite an improved appearance. We hear it is intended to call this new colony 'COALVILLE' - an appropriate name.
By 1900, Coalville had become a thriving town owing not only to coal mining, but also to other industries including brick and tile making, engineering and textiles. In 1925 the Memorial Clock Tower was unveiled, paying tribute to those killed during the First World War, and later adapted to honour those who perished in the Second World War as well.
In 1919 Alfred Edward Pallett founded a company in Coalville that would later become known as Palitoy. In 1966 it acquired the rights to the American GI Joe, renaming it Action Man for the British market. Among its other licensed products were Star Wars figures.
In 1964 Coalville's railway station was closed to passengers as part of the notorious Beeching Axe. The line of track remains open to freight, however. In a cruel twist of fate, a level crossing runs through the town centre (as can be seen just before the 10-minute mark), meaning the same tracks that built and served the town now impede it. Access to Coalville via public transport consists of direct bus services from locations including Leicester, Swadlincote and Loughborough.
Around an eight-year period from 1983 to 1991 six collieries in and around Coalville closed, bringing an end to this industry in the town.

Conkers is an award-winning attraction in the heart of the National Forest. Conkers is a wonderful back to nature day out. Outdoors you will find sand and water play, quirky playgrounds, a sensory trail, Fairy Labyrinth and a human-size rabbit warren with tunnels. The highlight is the barefoot walk. I recommend you take a towel to clean your feet afterwards.
There are paths with water, rocks, pebbles, sand, straw and more. It’s quite an experience. Also outdoors you will find a Sky viewing tower and a maze, plus extra activities such as bushcraft. You can hop on one of their regular train rides on the Conkerchoo II to the other end of the park. They have recently added a few new additions including a splash play area.
