Chippenham Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Wiltshire, and around 90 miles west of London, is the town of Chippenham.

In 878 AD Chippenham was occupied by Vikings. Later that year the Saxons, under Alfred the Great, defeated the Danes at the nearby village of Edington. In the aftermath the Danelaw was established whereby the Danes were given territory to the north and to the east of England.

Chippenham became a prominent manufacturer of wool in the 16th century, aided by its location on the River Avon connecting it to Bath and Bristol. In 1798 the Wiltshire and Berkshire Canal was built, opening up more trade routes. In 1841 Chippenham was connected to the Great Western Railway, linking it to London to the East and Bristol to the west.

In 1812 Sir Robert Peel became the Member of Parliament for Chippenham at the age of just 24. In his career he would go on to establish the Metropolitan Police Force in London in 1829. Thus the term 'bobby', referring to an old school policeman, derives from Robert Peel.

Balcombe Circular walk | ????????. Top 10 walks in South East | ???????? Hiking UK | England | 4K

The gardens of Nymans & the ruins of Slaugham

Length 17.6km (10.9 miles), 5 hours. For the whole outing, including trains, sights and meals, allow 10 hours.

Toughness 5 out of 10.

Features
This walk is full of small delights: a nature reserve and lake with Japanese pavilion down by the stream below the impressive gardens and park of Nymans (National Trust) with its part-ruined manor house; a churchyard in Slaugham (pronounced 'Slaffam') with a 600-year-old yew tree some 10 metres in circumference; the ruins of Slaugham Manor; then a walk down to the River Ouse – with the incongruous sight of a Roman arch and columns in the middle of nowhere – and later up through fields and woods to the fine old village of Balcombe.

I went to look at the OUSE VALLEY VIADUCT and this is what happened

What an amazing feat of engineering, it was actually like having some giants step over you. Reminded me of that Steven Spielberg version of the War of the Worlds starring Tom Cruise.

SWC Free Walk 14, Pulborough Circular. 10/6/13.

Back to Pulborough again for another glorious 13 mile circular.
From the station, it's familiar terrain, but in reverse, to Stopham Bridge. Crossing both The Arun and The Rother, it's then on along an abandoned canal to the medieval Greatham Bridge. After a short section along the banks of The Arun, the walker is then crossing the delightful Amberley Wild Brooks for lunch in the pretty village of Amberley.
Thereafter, it's along The West Sussex Literary Trail and a minor road to Parham Park, with it's brown-coated fallow deer. Then, on past past an airfield, across Wiggonholt Common and so to the RSPB visitor centre, which offers some fine views across Pulborough Brooks.
The finale goes past Wiggonholt's delightful little church, then alongside The Arun across the brooks and so back into Pulborough.
A lovely walk, with lots of variety amidst beautiful surroundings, though clearly one to avoid after heavy rain.

What Is Sussex Part 3 (History)

This is Part Three of the video series “What is Sussex?”. Here, The Yank In Sussex tells about the history of Sussex after the Norman Conquest.

Thanks to Cogidubnus1953 for pointing out that I got the year of the D-day landing wrong in the video. It was 1944, not 1945. Proves I'm human after all!

Traditional British Pub Food & Countryside Walk | West Sussex | England Road Trip Travel Vlog 5

In this travel vlog, we introduce one of the best things to do in the UK. You have to visit a traditional British pub for food and drinks before a countryside walk when visiting England or the UK. During our UK road trip, we stopped at a traditional English pub in Sussex, where Alex ate a typical English meal of pie and mash.
British food has a bad reputation but a lot of it is delicious! The best place to try British delicacies are in a traditional pub!

The best things to do in York for free with children

A visit to York with kids needn't cost a fortune. Here are eleven great things to do in York with children for free, and you can find more ideas and inspiration on the Little Vikings website

West Sussex in winter (Snow Scenes)

After many years of mild winters 2009 and 2010 saw West Sussex experienced heavy snow falls, giving the opportunity to witness scenes that many believed global warming may have banished for the foreseeable future. Armed with my video camera I set out to record some of the beautiful snow scenes in Bognor Regis and along the South Downs between Lavant and Pulborough. Already pretty villages looked stunning dressed in fresh snow.

Bell Ringing at Heene, West Sussex

Worthing, West Sussex, S Botolph, Heene (T). 8, 10¼ cwt (~520 kg) in G (772.0 Hz).

Footage taken on SCACR West event to Worthing, 13/11/2021

St Botolph's Church in Heene is a lovely mostly brick and flint church just out of Worthing town centre. The present building was completed in 1879. The rather small tower contains a, let's say, interesting 8. They were all cast by John Warner & Sons of Cripplegate in the same year the church was completed, 1879. They are known as being a bit of a ridiculous ring, as they are tonally poor, and with bodged pullies in the ringing room! They go alright, but bells 3 & 4 are a bit jumpy as they are on a higher tier!

I highly recommend you watch Paul Rampton's video about these bells, as he goes into depth as to how they work:

0:09 Ringing Up 2-3-4-5-6
1:05 Ringing Up 7-8
