Places to see in ( Southwell - UK )

Places to see in ( Southwell - UK )

Southwell is a town in Nottinghamshire, England, best known as the site of Southwell Minster, the seat of the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham, the Church of England diocese that covers Nottinghamshire. Its population is about 6,900, being measured as 7,297 at the 2011 Census.

The origin of Southwell's name is not clear, but there a number of locations which claim to be the original well, most notably at GR SK708535 where a plaque has been placed; in the Admiral Rodney public house; one on the south side of the minster which was called Lady Well in the 19th century; and one by the cloisters called Holy Well. Norwell approximately eight miles northwest may support the notion of there being south and north wells in the area. The town lies on the River Greet, approximately 14 miles (22 km) northeast of Nottingham.

In addition to the Minster (the cathedral and parish church of St Mary of Southwell), there are a number of other historic buildings in the town, notably the impressive prebendal houses along Church Street and Westgate, and the town's Methodist church has the unusual feature of an old right-of-way running underneath it, necessitating a larger upstairs than downstairs seating capacity. The old workhouse, built in 1824, was the prototype for many others around the country. It is now owned by the National Trust and recreates the same appearance and conditions as it did in the 19th century.

Southwell has a leisure centre run by a local trust, with trustees from the local community, although the district council also provides very limited support. The town is accessed from Newark and Nottingham by the A612,and from north Nottingham and villages to the west by the B6386. The A617 primary route passes 2 miles to the north of the town in Hockerton, and the A1 and A46 trunk routes are both 7 miles away in Newark. The railway station at the nearby village of Fiskerton has had a small car park built in recent years to cater for Southwell commuters. Southwell is also served by Nottingham City Transport's rural Pathfinder 100 service to Nottingham and Stagecoach East Midlands (Mansfield) service to Mansfield and Newark. There are other infrequent services to nearby villages.

( Southwell - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Southwell . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Southwell - UK

10 Most Loved Towns in England

What are the most loved towns in England? There is something about the towns in England that makes them famous the world over. Could it be because, in England, there is always a carnival or festival in one place or the other? You probably have to look past the large towns and cities to discover them. That's why we want to look at these 10 most loved towns in England to see why they're loved.
Some of these towns are neatly tucked away, in rolling green hills, on rugged cliffs, near forests, or moorland. Others have beaches and rivers. There’s something about these quintessential towns in England that makes them loved. Follow along and see if you too would love these most loved towns in England.
10. Selby
We start off with Selby a town in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire. It is a market town and civil parish in the Selby District. With its status as a town council, Selby is 14 miles south of York on the River Ouse. The town with a population of 14,731 is one of the 10 most loved towns in England.
There used to be a large shipbuilding industry in this town which was historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. It was also an important port on the Selby Canal that was bringing trades from Leeds. Something to be loved about this town is the market towns and picturesque villages. It’s one of the most loved also because house prices there are lower and people get more for their money.
9. Frome
When Frome was listed among one of the “Best Places to Live in Britain” by a popular ranking, we know it’s going to be one of the most loved towns in the country. Now, this town and civil parish in eastern Somerset is the ninth most loved town in England. Frome is built on uneven high ground on the Mendip Hills, at the eastern end and it centers on the River Frome.
The town about 13 miles south of Bath and the largest in the Mendip District of Somerset is loved for being welcoming, charming, and vibrant. A part of the parliamentary constituency of Somerton and Frome, it has a wealth of history, culture, and natural beauty. People from outside the town love it for its tranquility and antiquity.
8. Maldon
The next of the most loved towns in England is Maldon. The town council also in the ceremonial country of North Yorkshire is another town in the county on this list. Of course, North Yorkshire has a lot of loved towns, and this civil parish on the Blackwater estuary in Essex is just one of them. It is the seat of the Maldon District and the starting point of the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation.
Known for Maldon Sea Salt being produced in the area, the town with a population of 14,220 is loved for being a good place to retire. You will find a lot of elderly people from whom you can learn about the rich English history and culture
7. Hart
We would love to include Hart here even though it is a local government district. It’s in Hampshire and derived its name from the River Hart with its council based in Fleet. Formed on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act of 1972, it doesn’t have city status. However, it’s a merger of the urban district of Fleet, and the Hartley Wintney Rural District.
We consider Hart one of the most loved places in England after it was named the best place to live in Britain by the 2017 Halifax Quality of Life study. It’s indeed one of the richest and least deprived areas in the entire United Kingdom, according to the Indices of Deprivation 2015. The town ranked 326th least deprived out of 326 local authorities in England. That’s why people love Hart.

NEWARK ENGLAND | Tour of NEWARK ON TRENT from Newark Market to Newark Castle and Riverside Walk | 4K

NEWARK ENGLAND | Tour of Newark On Trent from Newark Market to Newark Castle and Riverside Walk. We walk from the Market Square down to the Riverside and Castle!
Subscribe to our channel here ????

Newark-on-Trent or Newark is a market town and civil parish in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire, England. It stands on the River Trent, the A1 – the ancient Great North Road – and the East Coast Main Line railway.

Situated on the banks of the River Trent, Newark is a picturesque town steeped in history. The ruins of Newark Castle have had a huge influence on the unique character of the town. Though the current remains were built in the early 12th century, there has been a castle on the site since 1068. Left in ruins by a turbulent history, the grounds were landscaped in 1887.

Newark’s market place is overlooked by the Georgian Town Hall. The town has become famous for its six annual antiques fairs, held at Newark County Showground, and thousands of antique hunters from across the world descend on the fair’s 4,000 stalls in search of a bargain.

Other attractions near the town include the Newark Air Museum – home to 65 aircraft and cockpit sections. Nearby, in North Clifton, is also home to a relaxing meditation centre and Japanese garden.

Other attractions here include:

Newark Market Place provides a focal point for the town. It hosts regular market day

Newark Town Hall Museum - always worth a visit!

Newark Castle and Gardens
Open from 8:30AM - dusk.

Newark Castle and Gardens are lovely, formal gardens and a great place to spend a few quiet minutes relaxing in the park and walking round the castle walls!

Newark On Trent is a thriving market town located just off the A1 on the east side of Nottinghamshire. The historic and picturesque market town boasts many heritage attractions and activities along with a range of hotels and breakfasts for an overnight stay.

Famed for its role in the English Civil War, one of the town's main historic attractions is Newark Castle. The castle was a Royalist stronghold but its key position on the banks of the River Trent meant that the castle has been severely damaged over the years. In 2015, the National Civil War Centre opened as the UK's only museum dedicated to telling the story of the brutal conflict. You can also take the Nottinghamshire Civil War trail which takes you to the key locations around the town of Newark as well as other sites in Nottinghamshire related to this turbulent chapter in our history.

As well as the markets in Newark, shoppers can also head to the Buttermarket for indoor shopping and well known high street brands. There are also plenty of antique and vintage shops dotted around the town which are perfect if you enjoy looking for treasures.

For aviation enthusiasts, Newark Air Museum is a must-see attraction. As well as having a wide range of aeroplanes to see (including a Vulcan, Buccaneer and Hawker), the museum hosts a wide range of events including open cockpit events. Sitting in the grounds of a former farmhouse, you'll also find the National Holocaust Centre and Museum, an educational facility and rememberance centre which promotes an understanding of the roots of discrimination and prejudice and emphasises how we must examine and learn from tragedies such as the Holocaust.

With so much history and heritage in Newark, there are plenty of things to see and do and the town is a great base for exploring nearby attractions, including Sherwood Forest and the historic town of Southwell.

Southwell Minster and Archbishop's Palace

Southwell Minster, the Cathedral of Nottinghamshire, is rich historical and architectural interest. It provides fine examples of the main styles of architecture, particularly Norman and early English. The latter is very evident in the 13th century Chapter House, one of the Minsters most glorious features with some of the finest examples of naturalistic carvings in the country - the Leaves of Southwell.

Music used in video is from Enderal Project and composed by : Marvin Kopp, Simon W. Autenrieth, Nicolas Samuel Lietzau, Andreas Makusev and Sebastian Löbbers :)

NEWARK CASTLE | A Strategic STRONGHOLD where KING JOHN Died | Walking Tour

Newark Castle, located in Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, England, has a rich history dating back to the 12th century. Originally built by Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln, in 1123, the castle served as a strategic stronghold during the medieval period. Over the centuries, Newark Castle played a significant role in various historical events, including the English Civil War.

In 1216, during the First Barons' War, it was the site where King John died. The castle underwent multiple renovations and expansions, reflecting the changing architectural styles and the evolving needs of its occupants. During the English Civil War in the 17th century, Newark Castle gained prominence as a Royalist stronghold.

It endured three sieges between 1643 and 1646, becoming a focal point in the conflict. Despite the hardships, the castle held its ground for the Royalists for an extended period. The eventual surrender marked the end of Newark's significance as a military fortress.

HALLOUGHTON: Newark and Sherwood Parish #49 of 84

NEWARK AND SHERWOOD PARISH #49: HALLOUGHTON

Halloughton is small parish with a population of less than 100, just to the South of Southwell, where its population is recorded. The parish covers some 988 acres.

It sits on a stream, and lies just to the North of Halloughton Dumble - a wooded valley, some three miles from the River Trent at Bleasby

Halloughton is not mentioned in Domesday Book except as one of the twelve outliers of Southwell, but the village first appeared in historical records in 956AD

That was when King Eadwig gave the estate of Southwell to Oscytel, who was the then Archbishop of York. At that time the village was known as “Healhtune”.

Located as it is on a dead end road off a main road, Halloughton doesn’t see much traffic. In fact, barring one singular vehicle, I saw no traffic at all in this episode

It’s got a good selection of new and old houses and its jewel in the crown is undoubtedly Halloughton Tower, which is directly opposite the small church of St James

Most of the farms and properties in the parish were owned by the Church Commissioners until 1952, when they were put up for sale to their sitting tenants

Oh and let’s not forget Brackenhurst Hall…even if that’s technically in Southwell. Lets go!
