History

Chaukhtatgyi Buddha Temple (Burmese: ခြောက်ထပ်ကြီးဘုရားကြီး) is the most well-known Buddhist temple in Bahan Township, Yangon, Yangon Region, Myanmar. It houses one of the most revered reclining Buddha images in the country.[1] The Buddha image is one of the largest in Burma.

The construction was sponsored by a wealthy Burmese Buddhist, Sir Po Tha, in 1899. The image was completed in 1907 by another construction company, but was not proportioned correctly, and the Buddha's face had an aggressive expression.

In the 1950s, the old Buddha image was demolished and temple trustees began work to replace the image, under the supervision of U Thaung, a master craftsman from Tavoy (now Dawei). Large glass eyes with dimensions of 1.77 by .58 metres (5 ft 10 in × 1 ft 11 in) were custom-created at Naga Glass Factory. The Buddha image was consecrated in 1973.

Bagan, Ancient City in Myanmar.
Bagan is an ancient city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Mandalay Region of Myanmar. From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, the first kingdom that unified the regions that would later constitute Myanmar. During the kingdom's height between the 11th and 13th centuries, more than 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of over 2200 temples and pagodas survive.

It's Shwebo!

A few months after protests in September 2007, I traveled around Burma for six weeks. My favorite town was back-water Shwebo, a few hours north of Mandalay. Here's some scenes, along with a pottery village nearby. Music is traditional harp by Hlaing Win Maung. Also see

Here's the transcript, I know it's not that clear:

Shwebo is about 70 miles north of Mandalay.

Locals see very few visitors.

Shwebo's famous for its thanakha, a tree that's ground into a paste and used for skin lotion & sunblock.

It was also the home of King Alaungpaya. His 18th-century palace has been reconstructed.

Many locals play games for a little extra 'tea money.'

About 20 miles east is the Ayeyarwady River.

Nearby is the ancient pottery village of Ngwe Nyein. Hundreds of pots are made daily.

Pots are shipped all over Burma, as far as Yangon, seven days' ride south.

MANDALAY - BURMA'S ROYAL DYNASTY - GOLDEN PALACE MONASTERY - ATUMASHI MONASTERY

MYANMAR - 10-DAY FIRST TIME EXPLORER - MANDALAY - DAY 6 - PART 3 - A visit to Shwenandaw Monastery and Atumashi Monastery a reminders of Burma's Royal Family and legacy that came to an abrupt end with the British Empire.
Specifically it brings us in contact with the last King of Burma - Thibaw Min He was the last king of the Konbaung Dynasty of Burma (Myanmar) and also the last Burmese sovereign in the country's history. His reign ended when Burma was defeated by the forces of the British Empire in the Third Anglo-Burmese War, on 29 November 1885, prior to its official annexation on 1 January 1886.
He was preceeded by his father Mindon Min. He was the penultimate king of Burma (Myanmar) from 1853 to 1878,] He was one of the most popular and revered kings of Burma. Under his half brother King Pagan, the Second Anglo-Burmese War in 1852 ended with the annexation of Lower Burma by the British Empire. Mindon and his younger brother Kanaung overthrew their half brother King Pagan. He spent most of his reign trying to defend the upper part of his country from British encroachments, and to modernize his kingdom.
Shwenandaw Monastery or the Golden Palace Monastery is a historic Buddhist monastery located near Mandalay Hill, Mandalay Region, Myanmar (formerly Burma).
Shwenandaw Monastery was built in 1878 by King Thibaw Min, who dismantled and relocated the apartment formerly occupied by his father, King Mindon Min, just before Mindon Min's death, at a cost of 120,000 rupees.[1] Thibaw removed the building in 10 October 1878, believing it to be haunted by his father's spirit.[2] The building reconstruction was finished in 31 Oct 1878, dedicated in memory of his father, on a plot adjoining Atumashi Monastery.[2]It is said that King Thibaw used it for meditation, and the meditation couch he sat on can still be seen.
The building was originally part of the royal palace at Amarapura, before it was moved to Mandalay, where it formed the northern section of the Hmannan (Glass Palace) and part of the king's royal apartments.[2] The building was heavily gilt with gold and adorned with glass mosaic work.[1]
The monastery is known for its teak carvings of Buddhist myths, which adorn its walls and roofs. The monastery is built in the traditional Burmese architectural style. Shwenandaw Monastery is the single remaining major original structure of the original Royal Palace today.[2]
The Atumashi Monastery is a Buddhist monastery located in Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma)]
It was built in 1857 by King Mindon, two years after the capital was moved to Mandalay. The monastery was built at a cost of 500,000 rupees.[2] The original monastery structure was built using teak, covered with stucco on the outside, with its peculiar feature being that it was surmounted by five graduated rectangular terraces instead of the traditional pyatthats, Burmese-style tiered and spired roofs.
The structure burned down in 1890 after a fire in the city destroyed both the monastery and the 30 feet (9.1 m) tall Buddha image, as well as complete sets of the Tipitaka.[1] During the fire, a 19.2-carat (32 ratti) diamond, which adorned the Buddha image (originally given to King Bodawphaya by Maha Nawrahta, the Governor of Arakan) disappeared as well.[2]
In 1996, Burma's Archaeological Department reconstructed the monastery with prison labor.

???????? Do Not Miss This in Mandalay Myanmar | Mandalay's Ancient Palace

This series was filmed in February 2020. Please take into consideration current government restrictions and political unrest in these locations before you plan a trip in 2021. Stay Safe!

After visiting Kuthodaw Pagoda, the World's largest book, we walked along the moat to Mandalay Palace. We entered the palace on the Eastern side, the only entrance tourist are allowed to enter. There was a booth to the left of the palace gate where you show your Mandalay pass ($10 we bought ours at the Teak Monastery). One person in you party must leave their passport at the gate, and you also need to give the name of your hotel to the military personnel. They give you a lanyard in return for your passport, and then you are permitted to enter the palace gate.
You walk through the narrow gate, shared by both cars, people and scooters, past the military guard and into the palace grounds. From here you have two options, you can take a scooter or taxi to the central palace, or you can walk. If you decide to walk like we did, you must stick to the single road way to the palace. The military will enforce this. The palace grounds are still an active military base, so you are not allowed to wander. You are also not allowed to take any photos or video until you have reached the central palace. We walked to the central palace, and it took 10-15 minutes. Cont'd on our website

Thanks for watching!

Good Time in Nyaung Shwe, Myanmar

Myanmar is still in its early stages of tourism and therefore internal travel takes sometime and effort. Getting from Bagan to Nyaung Shwe (about 350km or 220 miles) we were able to meet another couple staying at our hotel and coordinate sharing a van with a driver. This worked out well, allowing us to stop when we wanted along the way.

Set among the mountains of the nation's Shan State, Nyaung Shwe is best known for being the gateway to Inle Lake (a future video will cover the lake). We found the town and its people to be very pleasing, being quite rustic with a small-town feel. Being at a higher elevation than Mandalay and Bagan, the weather in Nyaung Shwe was much cooler and we loved it! Our hotel included a bike for each of us in order to explore the downtown and the surrounding countryside.

We found the “Shan Style” food to be fantastic and one restaurant was our favorite, right off the main street called “Sin Yaw. The owner Sao Thet Nanda OO, his wife and all the employees made us feel at home each time we visited.

Now sit back and enjoy our “Good time in Nyaung Shwe” video tour.
