All of these towns and cities are worming their way into the hearts of tourists from home and abroad. With due respect to these towns, and out of a deep sense of duty, we want to identify which of these towns are the best so that we can help the decision-making process for those having reasons to consider seaside towns. On the basis of that, we present to you the 10 best seaside towns in the UK.
Please note that most of these best towns in the UK have at one time or the other been the best in England.
10. Swanage, Dorset, England
The tenth place we’ll consider as one the best seaside towns in the UK is Swanage in South West of England. The town has been a popular seaside resort since Victorian times. Up till now, families have continued to enjoy its calm shallow beach. This seaside is also one of the 10 best seaside resorts in the UK.
With its panoramic views, the seaside resort offers relaxing luxurious holidays in self-catering accommodation in caravans and luxury hot tub lodges. If you want to own a holiday home, they’re available here with unrivaled views across the bay. The town is about one kilometer from the leisurely beautiful Swanage Railway. Its proximity to this and other parks, beaches, and castles makes it a good choice.
9. St Davids, Pembrokeshire, Wales
Stepping out of England, we find a small city and community in Pembrokeshire known as St Davids. It is the smallest location in the whole of the United Kingdom with city status. With its stunning coastal scenery unmatched in Pembrokeshire, it’s also the smallest urban area by local authority boundary.
One of the reasons for its inclusion on this list is its ability to blend its sacred status with its National Park. St Davids has a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere as you see surf shops, outdoor adventure centers, holiday cottages, and hotels in the shadow of its cathedral.
8. Southwold, England
When this town was found in the ninth position on the list of the most popular seaside destinations, we knew that it would be among the 10 best seaside towns in the UK. Now, it is the number 8 on this list. All year round, Southwold remains a tourist attraction, thanks to its dramatic coastline and beautiful architecture. Its cozy pub lunches and walks along its beach are charming.
As you walk along its pier, you will see spectacular views as you check in and out of many independent shops. You would love the charming seaside resort of Southwold. Though it’s almost an island, its sandy beach and hut-lined promenade offer a wonderful environment for holidaymakers and weekenders.
7. Filey, North Yorkshire, England
Ironically to some, Filey which is a town in the Borough of Scarborough considered unpopular by some people is one of the 10 best seaside towns in the UK. Truly, this beautiful seaside destination in North Yorkshire deserves a slot here as one of the most popular in the UK. It used to be a fishing village before developing into a popular resort with a very large beach that is playing a remarkable role in popularizing it.
It is quieter than most of its neighbors and most of the other coastal towns. This is because it has enough accommodations, seats, and transportation. There is no need for any rush here. You can just go there and enjoy your peace.

What are the poorest places in the UK? The last thing that’ll come to mind when the UK is mentioned is poverty. It’s not among the countries you’ll associate poverty with. This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. You’ll find some of them among the areas left behind in England, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities have to do something about these 10 poorest places in the UK.
10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Join us for a walk around the lovely seaside town of Whitstable, Kent, UK. We explore Whitstable Town Centre, Whitstable Harbour and Whitstable Seafront. It's a busy day in Whitstable with lots of people out enjoying the fine weather.
Whitstable is a town on the north coast of Kent in South East England, five miles north of Canterbury and two miles west of the seaside town of Herne Bay. Whitstable is five miles north-east of the town of Faversham.
Whitstable town centre is full of quirky independent shops, running along the High Street and Harbour Street. There's also the Whitstable Harbour Market which is well worth a visit.
Whitstable has long been famous for its oysters, which still play a central role in Whitstable’s commerce and culture. Native Oysters have been harvested in Whitstable since Roman times and while these can sometimes be hard to get hold of, there are plenty of locally grown rock oysters to be enjoyed. Popular restaurants include the Whitstable Oyster Company, Wheelers Oyster Bar and The Forge. Whitstable's iconic Wheelers Oyster Bar was founded in 1856 and is the oldest restaurant in Whitstable with a tiny oyster parlour and seafood bar, serving market-fresh seafood.
The annual Whitstable Oyster Festival takes place during the summer.
Whitstable town is criss-crossed by numerous small alleys, once used by fishermen to reach the beach.
Whitstable makes a great day out and is only an hour from London by train and 20 minutes from Canterbury or Herne Bay. Whitstable has so much to see and do, from exploring the independent shops and galleries, indulging in fresh seafood, seeing the colourful houses, delightful fishermen's huts, the picturesque shingle beach and browsing the eclectic shops. There really is something for everyone in Whitstable. Enjoy a wander around Whitstable harbour, try the fresh seafood on offer including the world famous Whitstable oyster. If you love English seaside towns then Whitstable is definitely worth a visit and while you're there, check out the Whitstable Harbour Market, selling locally handcrafted goods and art. It's a lovely place to browse and in the fantastic setting of Whitstable Harbour.
Like any seaside town, Whitstable has plenty of excellent fish and chip shops and restaurants making the most of locally caught fresh fish. It is also home to Whitstable fish market, offering all the fresh fish, seafood and shellfish you can think of, including produce from local fishermen unloading their catches just outside the door in the harbour.
Whitstable is a popular destination for watersport enthusiasts. Established in 1904, the Whitstable Yacht Club is one of the oldest yacht clubs in England and takes part in local and national competitions throughout the year.

Sheerness is a town located beside the mouth of the River Medway on the north-west corner of the Isle of Sheppey in north Kent, England. With a population of 12,000 it is the largest town on the island.
Sheerness began as a fort built in the 16th century to protect the River Medway from naval invasion. In 1665, plans were first laid by the Navy Board for Sheerness Dockyard, a facility where warships might be provisioned and repaired. The site was favoured by Samuel Pepys, then Clerk of the Acts of the navy, for shipbuilding over Chatham. After the raid on the Medway in 1667, the older fortification was strengthened; in 1669 a Royal Navy dockyard was established in the town, where warships were stocked and repaired until its closure in 1960.
Beginning with the construction of a pier and a promenade in the 19th century, Sheerness acquired the added attractions of a seaside resort. Industry retains its important place in the town and the Port of Sheerness is one of the United Kingdom's leading car and fresh produce importers. The town is the site of one of the UK's first co-operative societies and also of the world's first multi-storey building with a rigid metal frame.
The first structure in what is now Sheerness was a fort built by order of Henry VIII to prevent enemy ships from entering the River Medway and attacking the naval dockyard at Chatham. In 1666 work began to replace it with a stronger fort. However, before its completion, this second fort was destroyed during the 1667 Dutch raid on the Medway.
Sheerness is the only place in the UK to have been captured by a foreign power in the last 1,000 years. There have been raids on Southampton and Brighton by the French, but they did not capture and hold these cities. In 1863, mains water was installed in the town, and the Isle of Sheppey's first railway station opened at the dockyard. Towards the end of the 19th century, Sheerness achieved official town status and formed its own civil parish, separate from Minster-in-Sheppey. The 1901 Census recorded the Sheerness parish as having 18,179 residents and 2,999 houses.
Sheerness has had four windmills. They were the Little Mill, a smock mill that was standing before 1813 and burnt down on 7 February 1862; The Hundred Acre Mill, a small tower mill which was last worked in 1872 and demolished in 1878 leaving a base which remains today; The Great Mill, a smock mill, the building of which was started in 1813 and completed in 1816, which was demolished in 1924 leaving the base, upon which a replica mill body is being built to serve as flats.
Sheerness is located at 51°26′28″N 0°45′39″E (51.441, 0.7605), in the north-west corner of the Isle of Sheppey in North Kent. To the north, sandy beaches run along the coast of the Thames Estuary. To the west, the outlet of the River Medway flows into the Estuary. An area of wetlands known as The Lappel lies between the river and the south-western part of town. Marshland lies to the south and the east. The main rock type of the Isle of Sheppey is London Clay, which covers most of North Kent.
Sheerness-on-Sea railway station is on the Sheerness Line, run by the Southeastern rail company. The line connects Sheerness with the town of Sittingbourne, 6 miles (10 km) south on the mainland of Kent. Sittingbourne is on the Chatham Main Line, which connects London with Ramsgate and Dover in East Kent. Train journeys from Sheerness-on-Sea to London Victoria take 1 hour 45 minutes.

I Hiked around the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, (34 miles) in One Day!

Ever since about the age of 14 I've always wanted to know if it was possible to walk around the Isle of Sheppey in one day. Today was going to be the day I was going to find out.
I started at Minster Leas beach at 6am, hoping to get a decent sunrise but it was pretty much fully obscured by cloud. It was warm though, and not raining, so I couldn't really complain. The other reason I'd chosen this ungodly hour was to take advantage of the tide being out; had the tide been even halfway in I wouldn't have been able to pass.
After a couple of hours walking on sticky London Clay, shingle and sand, I made it to the World War I pillboxes at Warden Bay. For pillboxes that are over 100 years old, have fallen from the cliff and been battered by the sea for decades, they're in pretty good condition. Again, these are only accessible at low tide.
Next up was Leysdown where I had a bit of brekky and continued onto Shellness and the World War I bunker on the very south-eastern corner of the island. After drifting around a mile off-course I made my way over to Harty, then over some marshland onto Elmley Nature Reserve. Miles of walking over the open marshland ensued before reaching Kingshill Farmhouse where the second wedding I'd seen that day was getting ready to take place (the other was at Harty Ferry Inn).
I was then coming up to Kingsferry Bridge where disaster struck; the footpath was impassable due to high tide and it looked like I was going to have walk miles inland to get over to the other side of the bridges. I improvised and waded through some huge plants, climbed a barbed wire fence and got up to the road where I could climb down onto the other side. This was energy-sapping and took almost an hour but I was now almost in Queenborough where a Co-op was waiting for me. After feeding and watering myself (a late lunch at 4:30pm) I continued along the sea wall into Bluetown and then onto Sheerness. From here it was the home straight back to Minster where I arrived just before 6pm - 12 hours and 73,250 steps after setting off.

Recently we escaped London for a bit and took a train through the bridge of Isle of Sheppey!
Sheppey is so much more quite than London and the English Coast but has everything you need including shops, boat houses cafes and of course lots of nature around.
We visited this place on Queens Platinum Jubliee long week. It was quite windy throughout the trip but we made the most of it.
If you are planning a trip to Sheppey try to get your accommodation close Sheerness as its a town with most of the amenities. If you are traveling by your own car then you may stay anywhere on this island and everything is close by!
