IZMIR, TURKEY | 6 Things you MUST do in & around Izmir

Izmir Turkey offers a mix of cultural, historical and archeological sites. Thus, Izmir is a great place to visit if you want to immerse yourself in Turkish culture and enjoy the unique local cuisine. In this video, we break down the best things to do in and around Izmir, Turkey.

Best Things to Do in Izmir, Turkey:

6. Explore Konak Square
Konak is Izmir’s core historic area, located right next to the water. It’s known for its busy square full of pigeons. But you can also find Izmir’s iconic landmark here, the Clock Tower.

5. Discover Ancient Izmir “Smyrna”
Just like so many other cities in Turkey, modern-day Izmir has an ancient past. Known as Smyrna in the past, it was founded by the Greeks, taken over by the Romans and rebuilt by Alexander the Great before becoming part of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century.

4. Shop & Eat in Alsancak
The bustling neighbourhood of Alsancak is located in the heart of the city. It’s the center of culture and entertainment, thus the ideal place to indulge yourself in the local Turkish culture.

3. Day or Multi-Day Trip to Pamukkale
The 3rd best thing to do in and around Izmir is to go on a one day or multi-day trip to Pamukkale. This magical destination is located about 230 kilometers or 143 miles from Izmir. It can easily be reached within a day or two by bus, tour bus, train, or rental car. The limestone pools are of course a unique and beautiful sight for pictures, but there’s so much more than that at Pamukkale. In fact there’s an entire ancient city behind the Thermal Pools of Pamukkale.

2. Visit the Kemeralti Bazaar
The second best thing to do in Izmir is to visit the local Kemeralti Bazaar. This is one of the liveliest and oldest parts of the city and lies right besides Konak Square.

1. Day Trip to Ephesus
The best thing to do in Izmir is to go on a day-trip to Ephesus. Ephesus is our favorite ancient ruin in all of Turkey. The ruins are located about 80kms or 50miles from Izmir, near the city of Selçuk. You can easily get there by train, bus, or car and combine it with a visit to the House of Virgin Mary, a sacred place. Ephesus was an ancient port city and once considered the most important Greek city and the most important trading center in the Mediterranean region.

How to get to EPHESUS from Izmir for less than $2 | TURKEY

Although we had a slight hiccup with the train, we were able to get from Karataş, İzmir to Ephesus on a budget—for less than USD $2 each. A massive saving compared to renting a car, taking a taxi or going with a tour group to Ephesus.

Ephesus, known as Efes locally is a magnificent ancient city in Türkiye and it's also a popular tourist destination. It's located very close to the town of Selçuk.

There's this Izmir website for looking up train schedules and has a rail network map although it's not the most user friendly in English unfortunately and we're not sure it's all that up to date either so use with caution.

Our lunch spot was in Selcuk (just a short walking distance from the train station) and the Selcuk Bus Station (where you can catch a dolmus to Ephesus) was another short 6 min walk from there.

About Selcuk: Selçuk is a town in İzmir Province in the Aegean Region of Turkey. It is located 2 kilometres (1 mile) northeast of the ancient city of Ephesus, that was once home to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Its previous Greek name, Agios Theologos (Άγιος Θεολόγος), referred to John the Theologian, because emperor Justinian had erected there a basilica in honour of the saint. Ayasoluk is a corrupted form of the original name. In the 14th century, it was the capital of the Beylik of Aydin, and visited by Ibn Battuta. He noted, The congregational mosque in this city is one of the most magnificent mosques in the world and unequaled in beauty. Under the Ottoman Empire, it was known as Ayasoluk. In 1914, it was renamed Selçuk after the Seljuk Turks who first led incursions into the region in the 12th century. It was a township in Kuşadası district till 1957, when it became a district itself. Its neighbours are Torbalı from north, Tire from northeast, Germencik from east, Kuşadası from south, Aegean Sea from west and Menderes (formerly Cumaovası) from northwest. Selçuk is one of the most visited tourist destinations within Turkey, known for its closeness to the ancient city of Ephesus, House of the Virgin Mary, and Seljuk works of art. The 6th century Basilica of St. John the Apostle, which, some claim, is built on the site of the Apostles tomb, is also inside the town. Procopius said that the basilica was a most sacred and honoured place in Ephesus. It was severely damaged in the invasion of Selçuk Turks in 1090. The place was excavated in 1927, and Pope Paul VI paid it a visit and prayed there. In 1921, after the capture of the village by the Greek forces, the village had a total population of 600, ethnographically consisting of 580 Greeks, 10 Turks and 10 Armenians. It was built in the 10th century BC by the Greeks. During the Classical Greek era, it was one of twelve cities that were members of the Ionian League. The city came under the control of the Roman Republic in 129 BC. Que faire à SELCUK avec 10 euros ? || TURQUIE [Vlog 107]
