The Pilgrimage Church of Wies (German: Wieskirche) is an oval rococo church, designed in the late 1740s by brothers J. B and Dominikus Zimmermann, the latter of whom lived nearby for the last eleven years of his life.
It is located in the foothills of the Alps, in the municipality of Steingaden in the Weilheim-Schongau district, Bavaria, Germany.
It is said that, in 1738, tears were seen on a dilapidated wooden figure of the Scourged Saviour.
This miracle resulted in a pilgrimage rush to see the sculpture.
In 1740, a small chapel was built to house the statue but it was soon realized that the building would be too small for the number of pilgrims it attracted, and so Steingaden Abbey decided to commission a separate shrine.
Many who have prayed in front of the statue of Jesus on the altar have claimed that people have been miraculously cured of their diseases, which has made this church even more of a pilgrimage site.
Construction took place between 1745 and 1754, and the interior was decorated with frescoes and with stuccowork in the tradition of the Wessobrunner School.
Everything was done throughout the church to make the supernatural visible.
Sculpture and murals combined to unleash the divine in visible form.
There is a popular belief that the Bavarian government planned to sell or demolish the rococo masterpiece during the secularization of Bavaria at the beginning of the 19th century, and that only protests from the local farmers saved it from destruction.
Available sources, however, document that the responsible state commission clearly advocated the continuation of Wies as a pilgrimage site, even in spite of economic objections from the abbot of Steingaden.
The Wieskirche was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983 and underwent extensive restoration between 1985 and 1991.

You pay a deposit, or Pfand, for your mug and you can get it refilled throughout the market. Each market has its own mug, often printed with the year and a festive design

Romantic Road (Germany) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about the Romantic Road in Germany.
Thousands of years of history is experienced by those who travel Germany’s Romantic Road with its world famous historic cities, fortresses and palaces, from Würzburg to Neuschwanstein Castle. The picturesque Baroque town of Würzburg is located on the River Main amid the Franconian wine region and is dominated by the mighty Marienberg Fortress. The Celts created a fortress that subsequent rulers gradually extended and the oldest church in Franconia, including a massive watchtower, continues to be protected by several huge walls. Tauberbischofsheim is one of the oldest cities in the popular Tauber Valley that was once completely walled. Missionary bishop, Boniface, founded Germany’s first women's monastery in Germany in 735 A.D. and installed a family member, Lioba, as abbess, who tutored the daughters of the nobility and the Free Francs. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is where Germany’s Middle Ages have been preserved up to the present day with huge entrance gates and high walls that lead into the former imperial city.
In 1868, Bavarian King Ludwig The Second had a dream come true in Allgäu, southern Germany: Castle Neuschwanstein, the realisation of his amazing world of fantasy.
This fairytale castle was in construction for seventeen years and in every way the idyll of ancient German knighthood.
The wealth of occidental history, art and culture makes a journey on the Romantic Road a most fascinating adventure into the past. A dream journey through a country and its history.

This charming village is steeped in history and tradition, and offers visitors a unique glimpse into the heart of Germany. In this essay, we will explore the rich history, culture, and attractions of Schwangau.

History of Schwangau

Schwangau has a rich history that dates back to the Middle Ages. The village was first mentioned in historical records in the 12th century, and during the 14th and 15th centuries, it was a center of salt mining. In the 19th century, Schwangau became famous for its royal connections. The village was home to King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who built two magnificent castles in the area - Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. These castles attracted visitors from all over the world, and they remain popular tourist attractions to this day.

How to get to Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany

Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most visited castles in the world. More than 1.3 million people visit it annually, with as many as 6,000 per day in the summer. It is located in the municipality of Schwangau near Füssen and it lies at an elevation of 800 m (2,620 ft) at the southwest border of the German state of Bavaria.

Neuschwanstein Castle can only be visited within a guided tour and you can book it directly at the official website without going through a third party. The tour lasts approximately 30 minutes. The admission ticket is valid for a guided tour of the castle at a specific time. Keep in mind that the guided tours start punctually; in the event of late arrival, participation in the guided tour is no longer possible and you may not be allowed to enter the castle. Reservation in advance is necessary due to the high demand.

Hiking from the ticket center to the castle gate can take up to 45 minutes so make sure you arrive at least 15 minutes before your guided tour starts.

Photos and videos are not allowed inside the castle.

✅ How do you get to the castle?
If you are coming from Munich, take a train from Munich Central Station to Füssen. There is a direct train every 2 hours. There is also an additional connecting service that operates every two hours as well, requiring a change of trains in Kaufbeuren. Both the direct train and the other train with a connection in Kaufbeuren take approximately 2 hours to reach Füssen.

Once you arrive at Füssen’s train station, take bus number 78. The bus station is just right next to the train station. The bus is clearly marked for the Hohenschwangau castles. You will see a lot of tourists rushing to board a bus, you really can’t miss it.

The bus will take you to Hohenschwangau where the ticket office of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles is located. The bus ride takes approximately 5 minutes. Keep in mind that if you already booked a ticket online at the official website of Neuschwanstein castle, you WILL NOT need to enter the ticket center to redeem your ticket. Your online ticket should be good enough.

From the ticket center, you have 3 options to reach the castle gate:
1. You can hike all the way to the castle gate. This can take up to 45 minutes. This is what I did to reach the castle. I recommend hiking because you will enjoy the scenery along the way.
2. You can take a horse-drawn carriage ride. This can take up to 25 minutes. You will still have to walk for about 5 minutes because the horse-drawn carriage does not take you to the gate.
3. You can take a shuttle. The shuttle takes you to Marienbrücke viewpoint where the bridge is located. That bridge offers a great view of the castle. You will still have to walk for about 15 minutes to reach the castle gate.

The Wieskirche World Heritage site | Check-in

The pilgrimage church near Steingaden is a magnificent example of Bavarian ecclesiastical architecture. This rococo masterpiece has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983.

From Schongau to Füssen - bike tour along idyllic foothills of the Alps to famous rococo churches

The third part of our bike tour goes from Schongau to Füssen. It is part of the Romantic Road cycle path. On the way we visit the magnificent Steingaden Abbey Church (Welfenmünster), the Pilgrimage Church of Wies, one of the most beautiful rococo churches in the world, and near Füssen we have a wonderful view of Neuschwanstein Castle.

We leave Schongau through the Frauentor (Women's gate). After a short forest part, we cross the river Lech on the imposing Lech Valley Bridge. The Lech is dammed up here by the Lech Barrage 6 (Dornau dam) and the reservoir with its turquoise-green water, which shows the origin of the glacier, looks wonderful.

Then we dive into the gently rolling, lovely landscape of the foothills of the Alps. Meadows alternate with small forest areas, the cows always greet you along the way, small lakes shine like blue pearls in the sun and on the horizon we see the Alpine panorama, which is now getting closer and closer.

Our next stop is in Steingaden. Here we visit the so-called Welfenmünster St. John Baptist, a Romanesque basilica whose interior was completely redesigned in Rococo. Originally the church was part of a later destroyed Premonstratensian monastery, which was founded in 1147 as a house monastery of the Guelphs. The magnificent ceiling paintings in the nave were created in the Baroque period. The white stucco, the golden decoration and the many small putti give the church a radiant, cheerful atmosphere, typical of the lightness of the Rococo.

Shortly thereafter, the greatest highlight of the Pfaffenwinkel comes into view, namely the Church of Wies (Church in the meadow). It was built between 1745 and 1754 by the brothers Dominikus and Johann Baptist Zimmermann and is considered a masterpiece of southern German rococo. As one of the most beautiful and famous Rococo churches, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The construction was triggered by a pilgrimage to worship a statue of the scourged Saviour, who was believed to have miraculous powers.
The light-flooded interior with its richly decorated stucco work with gold paint overwhelms the viewer. The animated decoration, with its wealth of colors and the delicacy of the representations, create a serene atmosphere that enchants us. The imposing dome fresco by Johann Baptist Zimmermann is rich in detail and full of bright colors. Clever perspective distortions create the illusion of spatial depth. The fresco shows the redemption of Jesus Christ triumphing over death and ascending to heaven.

But we have to keep going, it's still a long way to our destination for the day in Füssen! Again we cycle through the Upper Bavarian picture-perfect landscape, through green meadows and under a white-blue sky, which represents the Bavarian colors. The Alps accompany our journey and are getting closer and closer.

Shortly before Füssen we pass the Lake Bannwaldsee. And then we see the main attraction of the area, the world-famous fairytale castle of King Ludwig II, Neuschwanstein Castle. Against the background of the mighty mountains, it really looks like a magic castle from an old fairy tale. Finally we reach Füssen, the destination of today's stage and at the same time the end point of the Romantic Road cycle path. Our hotel is located directly on the Lake Forggensee. Like all lakes in the Lech, the lake is an artificial reservoir and is almost completely drained in winter. But now in summer it is full and offers a beautiful panorama for our evening walk. Above the lake, Neuschwanstein Castle glows red in the light of the setting sun, a fantastic scenery. On the shore of the lake is the Festspielhaus, a music theater that was built for a musical about Ludwig II. However, despite the symbolic site, it has not paid off as expected, so that it is repeatedly threatened with closure.

Tomorrow we'll treat ourselves to a rest day, that means we want to explore Füssen and the surrounding area. You can find a video of this walk here:
