Tour of Saverne France • Including Château du Haut Barr in Alsace France |European Waterways

Tour of historic town of Saverne in Alsace, France - Château des Rohan, the adjacent 15th century Roman Catholic church & Château du Haut Barr. We cruise to the enchanting town of Saverne where history traces back over 2,000 years to the Gallo-Roman times, mooring at the foot of the Château de Rohan, also known as the 'Versailles of Alsace'.

Saverne is a commune in the Bas-Rhin department in Alsace in north-eastern France. It is situated on the Rhine-Marne canal at the foot of a pass over the Vosges Mountains, and 45 km N.W. of Strasbourg.

Saverne was an important place in the time of the Roman Empire. It was known as Tres Tabernae Cesaris (Caesar's three taverns), so called because in the older days there were three taverns on the way to the Lorraine plateau where they would change oxen due to the steep incline. It's a small and friendly town, possessing the region's characteristic steep-pitched roofs and window boxes full of geraniums.

Château des Rohan

The Château des Rohan is the former residence of the bishops of Strasbourg, rebuilt by Cardinal de Rohan in 1779; it was used by the Germans as barracks. The vast red sandstone castle, built in rather austere classical style, now houses the Musée Rohan, the city museum with its large archeological collection of Roman and Celtic artifacts, a hostel, a small arts and crafts museum as well as the collection of 20th century and ethnological art. A feature of the museum is the collection of local Resistance journalist Louise Weiss.

Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité

Alongside the Château, the church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité contains fine stained glass, culptures and a finely carved pulpit by Hans Hammer. Saverne is also known for its famous Rose garden, La Roseraie, with over 550 varieties of roses. It hosts the International Contest of New Roses every year.

Château du Haut Barr

We wander through the narrow picturesque streets of Saverne and then we visit the hilltop 11th century Château du Haut Barr, a former residence of the bishops of Strasbourg with its 12th century Roman chapel and Gothic choir.

In the Summer and Autumn, Panache cruises the beautiful waterways of Alsace- Lorraine. It is a region in Eastern France with a unique mix of French and German cultures, Baroque and Romanesque architecture, storybook villages, diverse culinary specialities and wonderful white wines.

During our voyage we visit historic landmarks such as Strasbourg's majestic Gothic cathedral and the enchanting village of Saverne where history traces back over 20 centuries to the Gallo-Roman times. We also tour fascinating places such as Sarrebourg with its museum and the chapel containing Marc Chagall's stunning stained glass windows, and visit the outstanding René Lalique collection of Nouveau and Art Deco glassware, chandelier and designs. We explore the rolling Vosges hills on the Route des Grands Crus, where the finest wines in Alsace are produced and of course experience an ascent or descent aboard the barge of the dramatic 'boat elevator' at Arzviller.

Panache is a stylish twelve passenger hotel barge, with spacious public areas and six comfortable double or twin en suite cabins. All the bathrooms have twin handbasins and oversized showers with massage jets. There are panoramic windows in the saloon and the barge has been fitted out in traditional yacht style with brass and mahogany fittings. A large sun deck and spa pool, plus 12 bicycles for guests' use to explore the towpath complete the picture.

Top Small City In ALSACE - The Secret City In France ????????

Saverne (Latin: Tres Tabernae Cesaris: Caesar's three taverns, so called because in the older days there were three taverns on the way to the Lorraine plateau where they would change oxen due to the steep incline) was an important place in the time of the Roman Empire, and, after being destroyed by the Alamanni, was rebuilt by the emperor Julian.[4]

With the settlement of the Alemanni, the town became part of the Germanosphere. After 870 AD the town belonged to East Francia, which turned into the Holy Roman Empire. During the German Peasants' War the town was occupied, in 1525, by the insurgents, who were driven out in their turn by Duke Anton of Lorraine. It suffered much from the ravages of the Thirty Years' War, but the episcopal palace, then destroyed, was subsequently rebuilt. After 1680 the town was annexed by the French. The episcopal palace was in 1852 converted by Louis Napoleon into a place of residence for widows of knights of the Legion of Honour.

Saverne was conquered by Imperial Germany after the Franco-Prussian War. It was returned to French control after World War I.

In 1913, the city was the theater of the infamous Saverne Affair. This event gave rise to the term Zabernism (from the German name of the town), meaning abuse of military authority, or unwarranted aggression

Saverne, a Small City in France - Magnificent Place inside Europe 2022

01:21:38 Ankunft in Straßburg
01:22:45 Eine Tour durch die Stadt
01:27:32 Verabschiedung

Saverne in the Alsace and an unexpected turn of events ????????

???? Subtitles available in English, Spanish and Dutch ????

And then suddenly we were in France... Who would have thought? One moment we are in the Czech Republic, the next we are in the North of France - the Alsace, to be exact. After our experiences in the South of the Czech Republic, we decide we don't want to spend the night there. We also didn't manage to get Czech money, so it would be tricky to find a place to sleep in the countryside since they don't accept cards.

While looking on Google Maps to figure out where to go, we see that we can actually reach the place where we stayed on the first night - the lovely farm in Bavaria - within the same day. We decide to give them a call and they say we are more than welcome to come. So we cross through the West of the Czech Republic and make it to a familiar place to spend the night.

The next morning, we drive all the way through the south of Germany to reach France. Nico saw a nice town in the Alsace called Saverne that looks like it's worth checking out. Was he right...?

MAP OF FRANCE

hello hello my friends. this is a map of beautiful france. The vast majority of France's territory and population is situated in Western Europe and is called Metropolitan France, to distinguish it from the country's various overseas polities..:
It is bordered by the North Sea in the north, the English Channel in the northwest, the Atlantic Ocean in the west and the Mediterranean sea in the southeast. Its land borders consist of Belgium and Luxembourg in the northeast, Germany and Switzerland in the east, Italy and Monaco in the southeast, and Andorra and Spain in the south and southwest. Except for the northeast, most of France's land borders are roughly delineated by natural boundaries and geographic features: to the south and southeast, the Pyrenees and the Alps and the Jura, respectively, and to the east, the Rhine river. Due to its shape, France is often referred to as l'Hexagone (The Hexagon). Metropolitan France includes various coastal islands, of which the largest is Corsica. it is on the western edge of Europe, and thus lies within the northern temperate zone. Its continental part covers about 1000 km from north to south and from east to west.

France has several overseas regions across the world, which are organized as follows:

five have exactly the same status as mainland France's regions and departments:
French Guiana in South America;
Guadeloupe in the Caribbean;
Martinique in the Caribbean;
Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of East Africa;
nine have special legal status distinct from mainland France's regions and departments:
In the Atlantic Ocean: Saint Pierre and Miquelon and, in the Antilles: Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy.
In the Pacific Ocean: French Polynesia, the special community of New Caledonia, Wallis and Futuna and Clipperton Island.
In the Indian Ocean: Kerguelen Islands, Crozet Islands, St. Paul and Amsterdam islands, and the Scattered Islands in the Indian Ocean
In the Antarctic: Adelie Land.
France has land borders with Brazil and Suriname via French Guiana and with the Kingdom of the Netherlands through the French portion of Saint Martin. thanks for listening. please subscribe for the best maps and for the love of france. Metropolitan France has a wide variety of topographical sets and natural landscapes. Large parts of the current territory of France were raised during several tectonic episodes like the Hercynian uplift in the Paleozoic Era, during which the Armorican Massif, the Massif Central, the Morvan, the Vosges and Ardennes ranges and the island of Corsica were formed. These massifs delineate several sedimentary basins such as the Aquitaine basin in the southwest and the Paris basin in the north, the latter including several areas of particularly fertile ground such as the silt beds of Beauce and Brie. Various routes of natural passage, such as the Rhône Valley, allow easy communication. The Alpine, Pyrenean and Jura mountains are much younger and have less eroded forms. At 4,810.45 metres (15,782 ft) above sea level, Mont Blanc, located in the Alps on the French and Italian border, is the highest point in Western Europe. Although 60% of municipalities are classified as having seismic risks, these risks remain moderate.
Reed bed on the Gironde estuary, the largest estuary in Western Europe
The coastlines offer contrasting landscapes: mountain ranges along the French Riviera, coastal cliffs such as the Côte d'Albâtre, and wide sandy plains in the Languedoc. Corsica lies off the Mediterranean coast. France has an extensive river system consisting of the four major rivers Seine, the Loire, the Garonne, the Rhône and their tributaries, whose combined catchment includes over 62% of the metropolitan territory. The Rhône divides the Massif Central from the Alps and flows into the Mediterranean Sea at the Camargue. The Garonne meets the Dordogne just after Bordeaux, forming the Gironde estuary, the largest estuary in Western Europe which after approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) empties into the Atlantic Ocean.[103] Other water courses drain towards the Meuse and Rhine along the north-eastern borders. France has 11 million square kilometres (4.2×106 sq mi) of marine waters within three oceans under its jurisdiction, of which 97% are overseas.
The French metropolitan territory is relatively large, so the climate is not uniform, giving rise to the following climate nuances:
• The hot-summer mediterranean climate (Csa) is found along the Gulf of Lion. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are mild and wet. Cities affected by this climate: Arles, Avignon, Fréjus, Hyères, Marseille, Menton, Montpellier, Nice, Perpignan, Toulon.
• The warm-summer mediterranean climate (Csb) is found in the northern part of Brittany. Summers are warm and dry, while winters are cool and wet. Cities affected by this climate: Belle Île, Saint-Brieuc. #francemap #mapfrance #france #mapschool #cartes #carte #mapsolo #maps #mapas

Andlau, France | A Visit to a Medieval French Town

Andlau, a lovely small town in Eastern France, is a wonderful place to visit and spend an hour or two wandering around.

The town, or commune, has been around for more than 1000 years and owes its existence to the Andlau Abbey in the center of the town.

It's most well-known for the delicious wine that's grown in the region and the Medieval features throughout the town also make it quite an interesting and picturesque place to visit.

Even though I visited Andlau in August there were hardly any other tourists around and I basically had the entire place to myself.

With a population of just under 2,000 people it's a very quiet and peaceful place and it's nice to visit if you're looking to escape the tourist crowds of the towns nearby that are much busier.
