Santander is the capital and also the largest city of the province of Cantabria in Spain. It features a small historic center and a handful of beaches. Its most famous tourist attraction is the Magdalena Palace which was used as a summer getaway of Spanish royalty.
Santander is reasonably small. The distance from one end of town to the other are some 6km (4 miles) and can be walked in 2 hours along the coast road. Within the city center everything is within walking distance.
Magdalena Park at the entrance to Santander Bay was militarised for much of the city’s history. Now it holds big public events like the summer “Santander Music” festival in August, and there’s even a mini-zoo here with seals and penguins.
When King Alfonso chose the highest point of the Magdalena Peninsula as the location for his summer residence it transformed Santander overnight. Not only did the city become a royal court for a time, it also started to attract the Spanish bourgeoisie and establish Santander as a tourist destination. The Palacio de la Magdalena is a melange of styles, resembling an English country estate.
Withdrawn from the ocean, between the Magdalena Peninsula and Cabo Menor, El Sardinero is a pair of golden sandy beaches that add up to more than a kilometre in length. Santander’s Gothic cathedral (Catedral de Santa María de la Asunción) is much more understated than the most vaunted Spanish cathedrals, with a stark, almost austere gothic design that dates to between the 1100s and 1400s.
In the 1880s Spain moved its royally-chartered maritime zoology and experimental botany institute to Santander, and this, together with a former attraction devoted to the royal dockyard at Guarnizo, was the forbear to the modern maritime museum. El Puntal is an urban beach without equal: It’s a sandbar that protrudes into the Bay of Santander for 4.5 kilometres from Somo on the eastern lip.

Playa de El Bocal, Corbanera, peaceful and quiet,
Playa de El Camello, Avenida de la Reina Victoria, near Magdalena Peninsula,
Playa de El Puntal, Somo (Ribamontán al Mar),
Playa de La Concha, in the middle of Sardinero,
Playa de La Magdalena, Ensenada del Sardinero, with fine views of the bay,
Playa de La Maruca, Monte,
Playa de la Virgen del Mar, San Román, peaceful and quiet,
Playa de Langre, Langre (Ribamontán al Mar), spectacular situation between the cliffs,
Playa de Los Molinucos, small beach north of Segunda Playa,
Playa de Los Peligros, Avenida de la Reina Victoria, quiet beach in a sheltered bay,
Playa de Mataleñas, between Cabo Mayor and Cabo Menor, the 'luxury' beach of Santander,
Playa de Somocuevas, Liencres (Piélagos), with fine golde sands,
Playa de Valdearenas, Liencres (Piélagos), fine sand dunes,
Playa Primera de El Sardinero, Plaza de Italia, the most famous beach of Santander,
Playa Segunda de El Sardinero, Playa de Castaneda.
Somo Beach is a little bit outside of Santander. It can be reached from downtown Santander by boat.

11. Santiago de Compostela. Hotel Pazo de Altamira is a lovely, modern hotel within a gorgeous old Galician stone building. And it’s right opposite the fabulous market!
10. Jerez de la Frontera. Definitely try and stay at the famous Hotel Casa Grande - a big old mansion with a gorgeous rooftop terrace for drinks -
9. Vera Valley. I would suggest staying in the village Valverde de la Vera and my pick is the cosy and rustic La Picota:
8. Cadaqués. I love Tramantua Hotel, a white-washed gem run by a husband and wife team… service is fantastic, and it’s right in the old city, plus near the beach:
7. Cáceres. We stayed at the budget but good Hotel Iberia Plaza Mayor with views of the square): If you want to stay IN the old city though, the Parador here is a 14th century palace - the full Caceres medieval dream!
6. Oviedo. Prices in Northern Spain are often cheaper, so you can happily get a great hotel here without spending a lot. Check out the excellent Barceló Oviedo Cervantes:
5. Zahara de los Atunes. Either go with Hotel Avenida Playa (simple, clean, and right off the beach - or the slightly more chic Hotel Doña Lola -
4. Las Alpujarras. Casa Rural la Fragua is a gorgeous little tucked away whitewashed apartment in Capileira (either stay here or in Pampaneira). This place is perfect for exploring the villages around the area.
3. El Rocío. I love Hotel La Malvasía with its old-world luxury, the fact it’s only a 5-minutes walk from the famous Santa María del Rocío church and they also have a terrace which is perfect for sunsets.

Bus info: (take the bus from Conde de Casal). Don’t spend the night there. It’s a day trip. But my favourite Madrid hotels are below (in descending price order):

Santander is the capital of the autonomous community and historical region of Cantabria situated on the north coast of Spain. It is a port city located east of Gijón and west of Bilbao with a population of 172,000 (2017).
It is believed to have been a port since ancient times, due to its favorable location, and is documented as far back as the 11th century. Much of the medieval city was lost in the Great Fire of 1941. Today, its remaining old town, beach and other attractions are popular with tourists and other visitors and its economy is mainly service based. The port is still very active and a regular ferry service operates to the United Kingdom. Fish and seafood dominate the local cuisine. Santander notably houses the headquarters of multinational bank Banco Santander, which was founded there.
Santander has a great tradition and cultural activity, with events that play an important role in cultural and social life of the city. UIMP is a major international summer university and organizes large festivals of music and dance.
