Barcelona part 10 La Ribera, Born and beach

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Entering the section of old Barcelona referred to as La Ribera, turn from Carrer dels Corders into the major walkway of Correr Montcada, which changes names a few times and basically takes you through the center of this historic zone. This was an area of deluxe palaces of rich merchants back in the 14th and 15th centuries and many of these buildings still stand today, adapted to new uses, such as the Picasso Museum.
Love him or not, Picasso was the major artist of the 20th century and lived in Barcelona during his formative years from ages 14 through 23 when his career and fame really got started. Then he left Spain, especially because of his distaste for the dictatorship of Franco, when he moved on to Paris and other parts of France where his genius continued to flourish. Founded after his death, this is the most popular museum in town, with one of the world's largest Picasso collections spread through what had been five separate mansions now seamlessly joined. If you don't want to pay for the museum admission, at least have a look at the series of interconnected courtyards, and you are always welcome to visit the gift shop.
Continue south along Correr Montcada, with some diversions through the numerous side streets that honeycomb this most historic neighborhood, with many little shops tucked away. When you get hungry, it pays to look carefully for the little restaurants hidden away in side alleys. Perversely, it seems the most popular eateries are trying hard to not draw any further attention to themselves and don't post signs, menus or addresses. A good example is Nou Celler, tucked away between Carrer de la Princesa and Barra de Ferro just west of the Picasso Museum, offering Catalan specialties, good service and reasonable prices.
After lunch, head for the large gothic church, Santa Maria del Mar, with its massive interior second only to the cathedral in size. The church is really impressive, consisting of a huge nave with soaring ceiling supported on pointed arches, and brilliant stained glass. This was all built during the medieval period, in the 13th and 14th centuries, so the architectural form is pure gothic. There is no influence or embellishment here from the later period of the Renaissance, nor was it built upon an earlier foundation in the Romanesque style of thick walls, low ceiling and small windows.
Behind is the tree-lined promenade of Passeig del Born with several short shopping streets extending a few blocks south. This neighborhood was the center of town back in the Middle Ages, functioning as the financial marketplace, major gathering spot, execution grounds, and general place to be. Today it is experiencing a rebirth, with many trendy shops and cafes thriving in the blocks around the church. A major park with the public zoo, Parc de la Ciutadella, is about one half-mile further east.
Notice the beautiful small plaza in front of the church of Santa Maria del Mar. It is busy during the day as well as at night with the shops and cafes around it, and the people walking through. This is a major pedestrian thoroughfare connecting different parts of the old section of town, so there are always plenty of people to see.
When exiting this zone, follow the nice shopping street, Carrer de l'Argenteria, which extends 200 yards from the front of Santa Maria del Mar back into the center of the historic district. If you continue walking south for 15 minutes you will come to the big sandy beach, filled with bodies on a sunny day.

Barcelona, La Ribera walking tour

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Our Barcelona walking tour with local guide Sandra Benzal is bringing us from the old Gothic quarter into La Ribera. This street separates the Gothic quarter from another historical quarter where we are now called La Ribera.
visit Sandra's website:
Ribera, in Spanish means by the waterside. This was a neighborhood that started to be populated outside the Roman walls 1200s, 13th-century. There was no more space there to live, so merchants and seafaring people, the guilds of craftsmen, come to live here next to the sea. The street still carry nowadays the names of the guilds. That for example, had their workshops and homes there. Like the street is called Argentaria, Carrer de l'Argentaria. Argent means silver. That's in Catalan language, yes. Carrer means street. So let's say the Gothic quarter was a political and religious center of the city, while here was a little bit more poorer quarter, more modest quarter, with merchants, seafaring people, artisans, okay.

A walk along Barcelona La Ribera Quarter

We will go to the district of La Ribera or Born. Born etymologically means fair or tournament, and today names the old district of La Ribera. It was a place where medieval tournaments, popular festivals and processions were held, between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Historically it was an old neighborhood of merchants, sailors, artisans, and trade associations, in the the powerful medieval life in Barcelona. So many of the names of its streets recall those old trades, streets like dels Sombrerers (hatters) dels Mirallers (glaziers), or dels Argenters (silversmiths).
The neighborhood was taking shape around the old church of Santa Maria de les Arenes, which are the origins of the present Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar.

????La Ribera????

La Ribera (Catalan pronunciation: [lə riˈβeɾə], 'The Shore') is one of the areas of the quarter of Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera of Ciutat Vella (the old city) of Barcelona.

Many of the buildings date from late Medieval times. It was a well-to-do quarter during 13th–15th centuries, when it really was by the sea shore, and the area that today is named Barceloneta was still an island. Notable buildings are the Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar and the palaces along Carrer de Montcada, including the Museu Picasso, the Museu Barbier-Mueller d'Art Precolombí, and part of the Textile Museum.

The former market hall Mercat del Born covers archaeological ruins which were part of the La Ribera district that was demolished after the Siege of Barcelona (1713–14) and the defeat of Catalonia in the War of Succession. Another place of interest is the Fossar de les Moreres, the site of a mass grave of Catalan soldiers fallen during the siege of 1714. Part of the quarter of La Ribera was demolished after 1714 to build a military citadel to punish the defeated city.

The lower section of the La Ribera district, just below Carrer de la Princesa, and leading to Barceloneta is referred to as El Born after the 19th century market on carrer del Comerç that dominates the area. This is one of the trendiest and most touristic districts in the old city. It is a popular place for expats and contains many art boutiques, bars and cafés.

The northernmost part of the quarter, La Ribera proper and Sant Pere, in contrast to El Born, is not frequented by tourists so much, even though it is between Arc de Triomf and Via Laietana, and actually constitutes a much poorer area with a larger number of migrant workers. It is being revitalised, but as with many other instances of urban development in Barcelona, the process has been ethically contested. The Forat de la Vergonya area, near Santa Eulàlia Cathedral, is such an example. The Biblioteca Francesca Bonnemaison is a cultural institution of the neighbourhood.

Continuing our walk through La Ribrera, one of Barcelona's extensive pedestrian zones, we visit a historic shop in business for 160 years, Casa Gispert, where they roast their nuts in an original wood-fired oven dating to 1850. We walk along Carrer de Montcada, one of the best pedestrian lanes, passing the Picasso Museum, with our local guide Sandra Benzal, who can be found at her website:

Places to see in ( Barcelona - Spain ) Ciutat vella

Ciutat Vella is a district of Barcelona, numbered District 1. The name means old city in Catalan and refers to the oldest neighborhoods in the city of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Ciutat Vella is nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the neighborhood called l'Eixample (the Extension). It is considered the centre of the city; the Plaça Catalunya is one of the most popular meeting points in all of Catalonia.

There are four administrative neighborhoods (some of them include former or traditional neighborhoods):
La Barceloneta
El Gòtic
El Raval
Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera:
Sant Pere
Santa Caterina
La Ribera

Running down the center of the Ciutat Vella (dividing the Raval and Barri Gòtic) are the boulevards Les Rambles, popularly known as La Rambla (in singular) since they are continuous, like a single street. Les Rambles stretches from Plaça Catalunya to the Mediterranean Sea and, since the 1990s, now extends out over the sea into one of Barcelona's newest centers of entertainment, Maremàgnum. Each of Les Rambles has its own specialty. La Rambla de les Flors (The Flowers Rambla) is devoted to flower stands, another Rambla to animal vendors (selling mainly birds), and the lowest Rambla hosts temporary art fairs. El Mercat de Sant Josep (more commonly known as La Boqueria) and Gran Teatre del Liceu (the Opera House) are both located here. Les Rambles are among the most frequently travelled streets by pedestrians in Barcelona.

At the bottom, there is the Museu Marítim (naval museum), which chronicles the history of life on the Mediterranean, including a full-scale model of a galley. The museum is housed in the medieval Drassanes (shipyards), where the ships that made Catalonia a great sea power in the Mediterranean were built.

On the other side of Les Rambles, is el Barri Gòtic. This neighborhood houses the Cathedral of Barcelona, la Generalitat (the Catalan government hall), and l'Ajuntament (Barcelona city hall). Tourists visit this neighborhood to see Plaça Reial (a Spanish-style plaza) and to shop in one of the tourist shops along Carrer Ferran. El Museu Picasso (the Picasso Museum) can be found in the area known as el Born, within the Barri Gotic, in addition to the historic restaurant Els Quatre Gats (the Four Cats), which was a popular hang-out for artists, including Pablo Picasso.

The Born in 6 minutes - Barcelona District to District

Local people and non-natives talk about the neighbourhood the live in, with the reasons you should come to get to know it and stay here for yourself.

Born is a the most elegant of Barcelona's old-city neighbourhoods and is situated close to the beach. Strictly speaking, Born isn't the entire area, but is one of three areas – Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera, and Born. The points of interest include Santa Maria del Mar church, Born Cultural Centre, Palau de la Música, Ciutadella, Plaça Sant Agustí Vell, and the Picasso Museum.

Neighbours tell us the stories and curiosities you'll find amongst these narrow streets, as well as the bars, restaurants, and cultural offering of the area. All supported with a tailor-made map that will help you to get your bearings so you won't miss a thing that Born has to offer.

The Born Cultural Centre is where the remains of ruins left by the Spanish War of Succession, which annexed Catalonia to the Bourbon monarchy. After this war, the victors built a fortress to quash rebellions within the city and this eventually became what is now Ciutadella Park.
