I spent some time driving the beautiful roads of the Pyrenees through Catalonia, looking for the perfect medieval village I'd seen in my imagination. There were several I found, but this one really stood out as one of Europe's best kept secrets - Besalú, about an hour and a half from Barcelona.

Places to see in ( Girona - Spain ) Olot
Olot is the capital city of the comarca of Garrotxa, in the Province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The city is known for its natural landscape, including four volcanoes scattered around the city center. The municipality is part of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park.
Olot is also well-known for its cultural activity, with historical art movements like Olot school or imaginary schools, which contributed to the location in the city of the main Design and Arts & Crafts school of the province of Girona, the Escola d'Art i Superior de Disseny d'Olot.
The municipality 29,12 km2 and includes the city of Olot and the town of Batet de la Serra (annexed in 1971). The term is located at 443.4 meters above sea level and is approximately 50 km from Girona, the capital of the province of the same name. It is bordered by Sant Joan les Fonts (north east), Santa Pau (south east), Les Preses (south west), Riudaura (west) and La Vall de Bianya (north west).
The municipality consists of the original city of Olot and old towns and neighbourhoods that now form a conurbation around the city (Sant Roc d'Olot, Sant Cristòfol de les Fonts, Sant Andreu del Coll, Closells) apart from different urbanisations (les Fonts, Mas Bernat, les Planoles, etc.) and the old municipality of Batet de la Serra, which was independent until 1971.
Olot is located on a plain surrounded by the mountain ranges of Valentí, Aiguanegra, the plateau of Batet, Marboleny and Sant Valentí de la Pinya. The plain is crossed by the Fluvià river and the Riudaura stream. There are four volcanoes in the city of Olot, called Montolivet, Montsacopa, Garrinada and Bisaroques.
The Montsacopa volcano is one of the main symbols of Olot. It has a cone of volcanic material and a circular crater. From above, a 360º panoramic of the city can be seen. The volcano also has a chapel on its top, dedicated to Saint Francis , and two watchtowers surrounding the crater. The old town, which grew up in the 9th century, has a rich cultural heritage, including the three-storied neo-classical cloister from the Hospici (charity building), the church of la Mare de Déu del Tura (patron of Olot), the Renaissance cloister of El Carme (which is a site of National Cultural Interest), and the Sant Esteve Parish Church, which was built in 1763 and it contains several artistic treasures, including an original El Greco (Christ carrying the Cross). Also in the old town there are examples of Art Nouveau architecture, like the Solà-Morales house.
Painting, sculpture and ceramics have been the key elements in the art of Olot, not to mention the tradition of the Nativity Scenes (pessebres), and the worldwide famous sculptures of saints. Also of importance is the School of Art, which was created in 1783 and nowadays it is the most important school of arts in the province of Girona (Escola d'Art i Superior de Disseny d'Olot). The artistic tradition of the city can be seen in several museums, being the Museu Comarcal de la Garrotxa the most relevant.
In Olot there are two important natural areas, the Moixina and the Parc Nou, which are characterized by their oak woods, which boast an undestorey of plants that are extremely rare on the south side of the Pyrenees. These woods also inspired many of the painters from the Olot school. With the city being situated in the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, the surrounding area also offers spectacular natural places like the Fageda d'en Jordà (a beech forest with volcanic blisters) or the natural springs of Sant Roc. The city also has a bicycle lane connecting to Girona, which was an old railway.
Main products of Olot's local gastronomy are the sweet herbal liquor ratafia, the traditional cakes coca de llardons and tortell de matafaluga, the charcuterie from Olot, the Olot potatoes (wafers of potato stuffed with meat, covered in egg and flour, and then deep-fried), and the buckwheat flour. Some of the restaurants of the city have grouped together, offering the so-called volcanic cuisine.

I visit Besalú, a medieval village near Girona that makes for a great day trip from Barcelona. It's a beautiful city and its historic center is a must-see. 10th century churches, cobblestoned streets, and the iconic medieval bridge as you enter make for a great visit while you are in town.
Besalú is a bit of a drive from Barcelona (just under 2 hours) and there are also buses that leave from the city that take around the same time. Another option is taking the train to Girona and a bus from there.

Banyoles, a guided Tour through the Old Town, Catalonia - Spain 4K Travel Channel
Banyoles is always worth a visit. The reason for this is not only the lake, but also because of the wonderful old town from the 14th century and the surroundings. The Catalan city of Banyoles is the capital of the district of Pla de l'Estany in the province of Girona. From here you can reach Girona or the beaches of the Costa Brava in just 25 minutes. Up to the mountains you only need 50 minutes. East of Banyoles is the Nature Park Volcanic Zone of Garrotxa (Parc Natural de la Zona volcanica de la Garrotxa).
Banyoles is the ideal location for holidaymakers who are looking for diversity.
In 711, the Moors conquered the area from the Visigoths and many of the residents were forced to flee. 25 years later the country was reconquered and divided into several counties under the rule of the King of the Franks. The counties became increasingly more powerful and independent, especially Barcelona. In 812, the King of the Franks, Louis the Pious, gave the area, where today's city of Banyoles was founded, to the Benedictines under Abbot Bonitus (Bonito) and granted immunity. In 822, after the experience with the Moors, the Sant Esteve Monastery was built as a fort.
The residents who have fled came back and settled around the monastery. They had to pay taxes and in return they received protection from the nobles and spiritual support by the clergy. In the 9th century they built a church, which was destroyed by an earthquake.
Over the centuries, Banyoles was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, and so today we find a mixture of styles, the products of the different construction periods.
Already the 9th century, the Benedictine monks of the cloister started with the construction of channels to the water supply. Today, the network of channels has a total length of 33 kilometers. A large part has been laid underground in the 20th century.
Banyoles experiences a new boom with the 1992 Olympics. According to a study of the University of Oviedo from 2011, Banyoles is the best city to live in Catalonia. In overall Spain, Banyoles ranks place seven. In this study, aspects such as cost of living, social services, housing, transport, environment, employment, health, culture, leisure, education and security were taken into account.

Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte wurde Banyoles mehrfach zerstört und wieder aufgebaut und so findet man heute eine Mischung aus verschiedenen Stilen, die Produkte der verschiedenen Bauzeiten.
Im 9ten Jahrhundert begannen die Benediktinermönche des Klosters bereits mit dem Bau von Kanälen zur Wasserversorgung. Heute ist das Netzwerk von Kanälen 33 Kilometer lang und wurde im 20ten Jahrhundert größtenteils in den Untergrund verlegt.
Seit der Olympiade 1992 erlebt Banyoles eine neue Blüte. Laut einer Studie der Universität von Oviedo aus dem Jahr 2011 ist Banyoles die Stadt in Katalonien, wo man am besten leben kann. Spanien weit rangiert Banyoles an siebenter Stelle. In dieser Studie wurden Aspekte wie Lebenshaltungskosten, soziale Dienste, Wohnen, Verkehr, Umwelt, Arbeitsmarkt, Gesundheit, Kultur, Freizeit, Bildung und Sicherheit berücksichtigt.

Spain Walks: Besalú. Beautiful medieval town in Catalonia, northern Spain.
Relaxing morning walk in this beautiful old stone town. Apparently quite busy with tourists sometimes. This morning I have it mostly by myself. I came here after a 40 km horseback ride the day before, and will continue on horseback this day. First a relaxing walk.
What I didn’t know when filming: there’s a tradition from medieval times in this town: putting chairs a bit high up on the wall of your house. That way a witch flying by can have a rest without bothering the inhabitants. You’ll see a chair on a house wall at 10.50. Lovely!
From wiki: “The town's importance was greater in the early Middle Ages, as capital of the county of Besalú, whose territory was roughly the same size as the current comarca of Garrotxa but sometime extended as far as Corbières, Aude, in France. Wilfred the Hairy, credited with the unification of Catalonia, was Count of Besalú. The town was also the birthplace of Raimon Vidal, a medieval troubadour.
Besalú was designated as a historical national property (conjunt històric-artístic) in 1966. The town's most significant feature is its 12th-century Romanesque bridge over the Fluvià river, which features a gateway at its midpoint. The church of Sant Pere was consecrated in 1003. The town features arcaded streets and squares and also a restored mikveh, a ritual Jewish bath dating from the eleventh or twelfth century, as well as the remains of a medieval synagogue, located in the lower town near the river. Besalú also hosts the Museum of miniatures created by jeweler and art collector Lluís Carreras.”

Documental Santiago de Chile en transporte público, grabado íntegramente el día viernes 03 de marzo de 2023. En el video te explico el funcionamiento del transporte público de la capital de Chile con ejemplos prácticos y muchos viajes.
Viajé en el Metro de Santiago (Línea 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 y 6), en buses del sistema RED Movilidad (114, 201, 210, 213e, 401, 419, 519, E07), el tren urbano Metrotren Nos, todos estos transportes son integrados y puedes usarlos con la Tarjeta Bip. Y viajé en otros transportes que no están integrados, como el tren Metrotren Rancagua (que tiene tarjeta propia), el Funicular de Santiago y el Teleférico de Santiago (ambos son transportes turísticos administrados por Turistik), y el ascensor del mirador SKY Costanera que es privado.
El transporte público de Santiago se paga con la Tarjeta Bip, que permite hacer viajes en 3 transportes dentro de 2 horas, con la salvedad de que no puedes repetir una ruta o recorrido. El pasaje cuesta cerca de 1 dólar, entre $640 y $800 pesos según el transporte que uses y la hora.
El Metro de Santiago es de la empresa pública Metro S.A, los trenes son de la Empresa de Ferrocarriles del Estado que también es pública, y los buses pertenecen al Estado, pero las rutas son operadas por empresas privadas (mediante licitaciones), y los buses son traídos y mantenidos por empresas suministradoras, que son las marcas fabricantes (también con licitaciones). En el último año 2023, cerca de la mitad de los recorridos de buses tiene nuevas empresas y nuevos buses. Dentro de esas renovaciones, llegaron casi 1.000 buses eléctricos. Para el año 2023, se estima que Santiago tendrá 1.880 buses eléctricos de diversas marcas.
Además de los viajes en transporte público, en el viaje vimos zonas de la comuna de Santiago y de Providencia, especialmente el Cerro San Cristóbal, la avenida Providencia, el Cerro Santa Lucía y el centro comercial Costanera Center.

Hoy compartimos el hermoso pueblo de Besalú, es un municipio y localidad de la provincia de Girona, en la comunidad autónoma de Cataluña. Perteneciente a la comarca de La Garrocha, cuenta con una población de 2492 habitantes (INE, 2019). La localidad es un centro turístico gracias a su arquitectura medieval. El origen de la ciudad fue el castillo de Besalú que ya se encuentra documentado en el siglo x, construido encima de un cerro donde están los restos de la canónica de Santa María, en la Alta Edad Media.
