San Vicente de la Barquera is a municipality of Cantabria in northern Spain. It had a population of 4,412 in 2002. An old fishermen's refuge, San Vicente de la Barquera offers one of the most picturesque sights on the Cantabrian coast, with its beaches, the old village and the exceptional backdrop of the snow-capped mountains of the Picos de Europa.
San Vicente's old town was declared to be of Cultural Interest in 1987 because of its interesting collection of monuments, forming part of which are the church of Santa María de los Ángeles, built between the 13th and 16th centuries, the castle and the remains of a wall. The bridges are another sign of the town's identity, such as the Maza bridge, with its 28 arches, which was built on the orders of the Catholic Monarchs in the 16th century, or Parral, which dates from the 18th century.
It also has some magnificent beaches, such as Fuentes, Primera de San Vicente, El Rosal, El Tostadero, Merón and Gerra, and a beautiful estuary full of brightly-coloured boats. San Vicente de la Barquera's maritime vocation can be appreciated in its gastronomy, which includes excellent fish and seafood and which has its greatest expression in sorropotún or Barquera hotpot, a stew prepared with tuna and potatoes.

Standing in the Old Town, San Vicente Church is the oldest in the city. Built in the first half of the 16th century in Gothic style, its interior is home to one of the finest Romanesque altarpieces, work of Ambrosio de Bengoechea and Juan de Iriarte.
Sharing the limelight is the 1868 French organ by Cavaille-Coll and impressive stained glass windows. On one side of the facade is the sculpture of the “Pietà” by the artist Jorge Oteiza.
Lording it over the Parte Vieja, this striking church is thought to be the oldest building in San Sebastián. Its origins date to the 12th century, but it was rebuilt in its current Gothic form in the early 1500s. The towering facade gives onto an echoing vaulted interior, featuring an elaborate gold altarpiece and a 19th-century French organ. Also impressive are the stained glass rose windows

The area around Alicante has been inhabited for over 7000 years. The first tribes of hunter-gatherers moved down gradually from Central Europe between 5000 and 3000 BC. Some of the earliest settlements were made on the slopes of Mount Benacantil. By 1000 BC Greek and Phoenician traders had begun to visit the eastern coast of Spain, establishing small trading ports and introducing the native Iberian tribes to the alphabet, iron and the pottery wheel. The Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca established the fortified settlement of Akra Leuka (Greek: Ἄκρα Λευκή, meaning White Mountain or White Point), in the mid-230s BC, which is generally presumed to have been on the site of modern Alicante.

The Alicante Tram, trademarked as Alicante Metropolitan TRAM, operates in the Spanish city of Alicante and its surrounding area. Like other narrow gauge railways in the Valencian Community, it is run by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana.
Alicante Tram was inaugurated on 15 August 2003 replacing narrow-gauge diesel trains between Alicante and El Campello. The Alicante Metropolitan Tram light rail combines different modes of rail services: a partially underground modern tramway through Alicante city centre, a tram-train from Alicante to Benidorm, and conventional commuter rail from Benidorm to Altea, Calp and Dénia.
There has been a rich history of urban rail service in Alicante. The tram service began on 13 July 1893 and the network was rapidly expanding to Mutxamel (1902), Elche and Crevillent (1905) and San Vicente del Raspeig (1906). Initially, the streetcars were horse-drawn. Since 1903 the trams were carried as well by the power of steam engine, leading to the disappearance of the horse-drawn trams by 1924. The electrification of tram lines began in 1923. In 1920s and 30s the network was further expanded throughout the city and was extensively used in 1940s. In 1950s, due to high costs of electricity, trams were gradually losing the competition against growing automobile services and by 14 November 1969 they completely disappeared from the streets. Thirty years later, on 13 March 1999 the trams were back with the inauguration of an experimental route between Plaza del Mar and Albufereta that was extended to El Campello in 2003.

After being robbed in Valencia and disliking the distance from the city center to the beach, we switched up our plans and headed to Alicante. Moving to Alicante was the best-unplanned decision of this European trip. I rented a car and started driving south; we stopped in Xabia at La Siesta for lunch. Alicante is ancient, has excellent food, and is on the ocean. Remember that these are not Hawaii beaches, and there can be a lot of seaweed. I love these live music nights and the open-air eating in little nooks all over the streets. The best churros are at Churreria Santa Faz on Calle Mayor. I wanted to get the boys cute leather sandals, but Stewart hated this idea. After his meltdown, we went candy shopping. The next day, we went to Playa San Juan, which has a more excellent beach and is 18 minutes north of the city center. You can rent a beach umbrella and chair for only 10 Euros for the entire day. My boys loved the steak and pedron pepper dish at restaurant Quo Vadis. I took the boys to a Flamenco show to wrap up Alicante on our last night. The flamenco girl was only nine years old and was killing it!
