10 California Mission Spots to Visit Along El Camino Real

10 things to see at the California Missions -

El Camino Real is a road in California that connects the 21 Spanish California missions that were established in the state. These are some of the oldest buildings and landmarks in California, which makes them interesting to visit even though they have become polarizing. I took a 7-day road trip to visit all of them in 2016 and you can read about that below or you can see my favorite spots at the California Missions in this video.

Mission San Juan Capistrano Travel Guide - California Missions | California Travel Tips

California travel journalist Veronica Hill shares her Mission San Juan Capistrano travel guide in this episode of California Travel Tips.

The Jewel of the California Missions, Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded by Franciscan Padre Junipero Serra on Nov. 1, 1776. The mission was the 7th of 21 California missions established along El Camino Real, The Kings Road.

It was here, in 1779, that California's first vineyard of criolla grapes was planted, and where experts believe the state's wine industry began. The first sacramental wines were produced here in 1783.

In 1818, a band of pirates led by Hipolito Bouchard landed at Dana Point and moved inland, raiding the Mission of its food and wine. Fortunately, residents were warned of the assault and hid most of the Mission's gold and treasure.

Highlights of the mission include:
• Serra Chapel, the last surviving church where Father Junipero Serra performed Mass.
• The Great Stone Church, completed in 1806, was once the most magnificent chapel on the West Coast. In 1812, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake destroyed the church, killing 42 parishioners. Some believe that the ghost of Magdalena, a girl killed in the rubble, still haunts the ruins.
• The Central Courtyard and Gardens, home to colorful poppies, fragrant blooms, and a bubbling Moorish fountain filled with koi.

????????The Los Rios Historic District | San Juan Capistrano | Orange County | California |????????USA [4K]

???? Recording Date: July 11. 2021(Sunday)
⏱ Recording Time: 02:05 PM
????️ Weather: 78°F????|⛅ Partly Sunny

The Los Rios Historic District is an historic district and neighborhood in the city of San Juan Capistrano, California. With buildings dating to 1794, it is the oldest continually occupied neighborhood in the state. The nearby Mission San Juan Capistrano was the first of the 21 California Missions to have Indians, soldiers and workers live outside the mission grounds.Three adobes are remaining in the Los Rios neighborhood itself, although there are a number of others close by which were part of what was once a larger neighborhood.

The neighborhood originally had 40 adobe structures, but most were replaced in the 19th century by wooden board and batten structures. Thirty-one of the buildings on Los Rios Street and the surrounding area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of 1983.

San Juan Capistrano is the site of a Catholic mission for which it is named, Mission San Juan Capistrano. At the time the Mission was founded in 1776, the region was populated by the Acjachemen band of Native Americans, called Juaneños by the Spanish. They had resided in the area for approximately 10,000 years. The mission was named after Giovanni da Capistrano (1386–1456), the Franciscan saint from Capestrano, in the Italian region of Abruzzo.

The city is the site of California's oldest post-colonial residential neighborhood, Los Rios. It is also the home of the oldest in-use building in California, the Serra Chapel in the Mission. The area was the site of both the first vineyard and first winery in California.

????????San Juan Capistrano,The Los Rios Historic District | Orange County | California |????????[4K]WIDE

Mission San Juan Capistrano is known as the “Jewel of the California Missions” and welcomes over 300,000 visitors each year.

The Los Rios District lies directly across the railroad tracks from the Capistrano Depot and is the oldest neighborhood in California. The forty homes that remain here include three original adobe structures. The Montanez, the Rios, and the Silvas are all that remain of the adobes that housed the builders of the mission and the mission ranch workers in the late 1700's and early 1800's. During these early years, as the Great Stone Church was being built, the mission was prospering as the center of the economy for the Spanish and the Acjachemen Indians who were beginning to merge their cultures. Many of the other homes here were built by European immigrants in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Today, although most of the homes are private residences, there are many businesses open to the public during business hours. This provides a relaxing and enchanting experience for locals and tourists alike. To walk the streets of the Los Rios District is to recapture the tranquillity of the slower pace of life that existed before the turn of the century and before. It was not long ago that the streets were still dirt. Willow trees grow among eucalyptus and palm. Cactus and wildflowers grow beneath sprays of bouganvia. We can hear the hum of insects that a writer in the 1800's wrote about and feel the haunting presence of those who lived in that time.As trains come in and out of the station, visitors cross the tracks to visit Zoomars Petting Zoo where children can ride the ponies and feed and pet rabbits, goats and other animals. Many come to Hummingbird Cottage to treat themselves to gifts, unusual collectibles or a soda. Other attractions include Apple Rose Cottage, Ramos House Cafe, The Tea House on Los Rios, Lemon Drop Grove (gifts shop), Ito Nursery and The O'Neill Museum where visitors can learn more about early California history as it all began here years ago.

Best Things to Do in Orange County, California

Have you ever been to Orange County, California? Before 2003, it was perhaps best known as the home of Disneyland. And starting in 2003, it was perhaps better known as “The OC”, home of some fictional teens exploring the trials and tribulations of being super wealthy and living on the beachside property. But Orange County is far more than just those two aspects.

Best Things to Do in Orange County, California

Orange County Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia

Orange County – Find this Californian destination between the vibrant metropolis of Los Angeles and the relaxed waves of San Diego. Come visit “OC,” as it’s called by locals, located along the Pacific coastline and inland.

When ready, browse vacation packages to Orange County:

Your #OrangeCounty #vacation should include a #tour of some of the oldest Californian buildings in use today at Mission San Juan Capistrano. Don’t miss Laguna Beach, another town with a long history.

At Crystal Cover, #stay in antique cabins put together from old Hollywood movie sets. At Newport Beach, sprawling, million-dollar homes line the harbor.

Hit the waves in Huntington Beach, then head inland to explore the theme parks. The grandfather of all amusement parks is Disneyland®: it’s stood in Anaheim since 1965. Not far away is Knott’s Berry Farm®, once a collection of relocated ghost towns that evolved into a series of rides and amusements intended to celebrate the pioneer spirit.

Despite its various architectural marvels, theme parks, and numerous activities, Orange County is famed for something much simpler: its sunsets. Head over to the nearest beach and watch the sun disappear into the Pacific.

For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

[4K] Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano| Church Tour| Los Rios District & Park | Historic Downtown

Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano| Church Tour| Los Rios District & Park

Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano is a roman catholic parish in the diocese of Orange. The parish church is located just northwest of Mission San Juan Capistrano in the city of San Juan Capistrano, California. Known as the jewel of the missions, Mission San Juan Capistrano is a historic landmark and monument to California’s multi-cultural history.

Construction of this new parish church was completed in 1986. The church is patterned after the Mission’s Great Stone church destroyed by the earthquake in 1812 but this is not a replica of it. It was designed by architect John Bartlett and built by Joseph Byron, Jr. The ruins of the Great Stone Church are located on the Historic Mission grounds, which is open to tourists on a daily basis.

St. Peregrine is a patron saint of cancer sufferers. His legendary self-healing of the disease has led many people visit this church in hope of a miraculous cure.

In the Jubilee Year of 2000, Pope John Paul II proclaimed the Mission Church of San Juan Capistrano a Basilica. This is a title of honor granted by the Holy See to churches that have achieved special religious, historical, and cultural significance. Churches granted this title carry a particular relationship with the Holy See. They are designated as places where the Holy Father and the Petrine ministry are honored and supported with special solemnity.

On the Feast of St. Joseph, March 19, 2003, the U.S. National Conference of Catholic Bishops designated Mission San Juan Capistrano as a National Shrine. As a National Shrine, Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano is an officially sanctioned and recommended place of pilgrimage. It is dedicated to inspiring and fostering the deeper spiritual renewal sought by religious pilgrims.

A prominent feature of the basilica is the Grand Retablo, a 42 foot high altar carved in cedar and covered in gold leaf which is stylistically reminiscent of 17th and 18th century Spanish colonial and Mexican colonial retablos. The retablo's focal point is the Trinity, composed of the crucifix, God the Father depicted as an ancient patriarch, and the Holy Spirit depicted as a dove. Beneath the Trinity is Our Lady of Guadalupe. Four saints included on the retablo are Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Joseph, Saint Serra and Saint Tekakwitha. The Retablo was designed and created by 84 artisans from Madrid, Spain.

The Mission Basilica church is located in the heart of historic downtown San Juan Capistrano, within walking distance to shops, restaurants and the train station – a perfect destination for all ages!

After attending a mass, we decided to spend our Sunday afternoon exploring the historic Los Rios District that many people often overlook. In Southern California, there are not a lot of places like the Los Rios District, places that have such as great history and are so well preserved. This historic district lies directly across the railroad tracks from the Metrolink station. This is home to unique historic assets, a notable Native American history, a train depot and many outstanding community curated adobes and buildings. The culture here is strengthened with festivals, concerts and art shows, all within walking distance from one another. This is an excellent area to spend your quality time with your family. There are great places to eat, drink, shop and explore.

We are now in Los Rios Park. This place really feels like in the Old West. The picnic area is covered with a lush trellis of grape vines to shade the picnic tables. Many of the tables were built to be accessible to families where they can hang out and enjoy the historic Los Rios neighborhood.

There is a children’s playground which has a dark wood structure with iron accents. This is a great place for families with plenty of seating area and beautiful landscaping.

Before heading home we decided to grab lunch and eat at Mayfield restaurant. This is located in downtown San Juan Capistrano and offers modern California cooking with flavors from Mediterranean. We ordered their popular menu which is Mayfield burger and also tried their yummy Sticky Glazed Chicken. Both dishes were delicious and satisfying.
