Venezuela’s urban spirit can be discovered mainly from understanding Caracas, its capital city.
Caracas is not one of the top touristic destinations of Venezuela, and travelers often bypass the capital city in order to see the country’s amazing natural attractions. However, the Venezuelan capital can be a fascinating city to explore, replete with excellent art, food and a bustling nightlife.
Caracas is located in a beautiful valley, overlooked by Mount Avila, an impressive mountain that separates the city from the Caribbean Sea and shapes most of the city’s landscape. It is a popular weekend destination for the city’s residents (known as Caraqueños) and is easily reached by taking a very modern cable car that goes all the way from the mountain base to the newly nationalized Waraira Repano park, which is situated at the top of the mountain.
In Caracas the staggering inequalities of wealth that characterize Venezuela’s economic situation are on display. They range from very poor neighborhoods in the hills west of the city called “barrios”, to the modern busiCaracas has more than enough sights and attractions to fill three or four days although it is often overlooked by international travelers.
La Plaza Bolivar, located near the Metro Capitolio. Is located in the city center. It has statues of Simon Bolivar, and is close to Congress and other government buildings. It also displays nice examples of colonial architecture. Look out for black squirrels that roams around the trees in the plaza. edit
La Casa Natal de Simon Bolivar. Bolivar's birthplace, also downtown. One of the few well-preserved colonial buildings with some great paintings and a museum. Next door is the Museo Bolivariano with some of Bolivar's war relics. Capitolio Metro Station. edit
Museo de Arte Colonial, Located in the Quinta Anauco on Av Panteon in San Bernardino. this is a lovely old house and garden that hosts small concerts some weekends. edit
Universidad Central de Venezuela. was designated a World Heritage Site by the UN in 2000. Designed by Venezuela's most famous architect, Carlos Raul Villanueva, the university campus, known as the Ciudad Universitaria is a sprawling complex considered a masterpiece of 1950s and 1960s architecture blended in with art. El Hatillo, (past la Trinidad in the SE of the city). A beautiful neighborhood still styled in traditional colonial fashion that is home to many shops, bars, and restaurants and is frequented by the middle class of Caracas. A great place to stroll around in the afternoon (safe to walk around) and grab lunch, as it is to return for the nightlife. Requires a car to arrive as no public transportation comes to this area. edit
Bulevar de Sabana Grande, (in the center of the city near the Sabana Grande metro stop). One of the city's most famous shopping avenues, a charming cobblestone street with countless outdoor and indoor shopping establishments as well as hotels and restaurants. Also a great spot for relaxing and people-watching; on any given day you can observe people bartering at shops, playing chess, or even dancing around dressed like Disney characters. edit
Cuartel de la Montaña or 4F, on top of Barrio 23 Enero. Hugo Chavez's mausoleum is at the army barracks where Chavez's socialism was incubated. Although in a barrio, there's a heavy army presence which makes it a safe visit. Entry includes a free guided tour of the mausoleum and Chavez's belongings. There's a change of guards every 2 hours starting at 10am, with the last change at 4pm. At 4.25pm (time of his death) everyday, a cannon is fired in front. To get there, one can take the free Metrobus or private buses at Capitolio. edit

Cúcuta, oficialmente San José de Cúcuta, es un municipio colombiano, capital del departamento de Norte de Santander y núcleo del Área Metropolitana de Cúcuta. La ciudad está situada en el valle homónimo, al pie de la Cordillera Oriental de los Andes Colombianos, próxima a la frontera con Venezuela. Comprende una superficie aproximada de 1117 km², con un área urbana de 64 km² (dividida en 10 comunas) y un área rural de 1053 km² (dividida en 10 corregimientos).12 Tiene una población de 777.106 habitantes, lo que lo ubica como el municipio más poblado del departamento y el sexto municipio más poblado del país.13 De la misma forma, su Área metropolitana (conformada por los municipios de Villa del Rosario, Los Patios, El Zulia, San Cayetano y Puerto Santander) cuenta con una población que supera el millón de habitantes.14
La ciudad fue fundada como parroquia el 17 de junio de 1733 por Juana Rangel de Cuéllar, vecina de Pamplona radicada en la zona, bajo el nombre de San José de Guasimales, como parte de una iniciativa de los locales blancos y mestizos para separarse del pueblo de indios de Cúcuta (actual barrio San Luis). Posteriormente, el nombre fue cambiado a San José de Cúcuta, castellanización de «Kuku-ta», en honor a los indígenas de la región.15 A partir de su fundación en el siglo xviii y durante toda la época virreinal española, la parroquia se fue consolidando como uno de los asentamientos más importantes del oriente neogranadino y de la América española, gracias a su posición estratégica entre las fértiles tierras de la provincia de Pamplona y la provincia de Maracaibo,161718 recibiendo en 1792 el título de «Muy Noble, Valerosa y Leal Villa» mediante Cédula real por parte del Rey Carlos IV de España.19
La ciudad es el epicentro político, económico, industrial, artístico, cultural, deportivo y turístico de Norte de Santander y su área metropolitana se constituye, a su vez, como el asentamiento urbano más importante de la frontera Colombo-Venezolana junto con la ciudad venezolana de San Cristóbal, debido a su dinámica comercial y a su histórica importancia en la consolidación de los estados modernos de Colombia y Venezuela así como sus relaciones diplomáticas, albergando eventos como la Batalla de Cúcuta de 1813, el Congreso Constituyente de 1821 en Villa del Rosario, el sitio de Cúcuta durante la Guerra de los Mil Días, el Tratado de Tonchalá de 1959,20 los conciertos benéficos Paz Sin Fronteras de 2008 y Venezuela Aid Live de 2019, entre otros. Así mismo, jugó un papel significativo durante la inmigración colombiana en Venezuela y, recientemente, se ha convertido en uno de los puntos de paso más importantes de la crisis migratoria venezolana.21222324
Como capital de Norte de Santander, la ciudad alberga los principales órganos gubernamentales de orden departamental como la Gobernación de Norte de Santander, la Asamblea de Norte de Santander, el Tribunal Superior del Distrito Judicial de Cúcuta, el Tribunal Administrativo de Norte de Santander y las seccionales regionales del Consejo Superior de la Judicatura, la Fiscalía General de la Nación, la Procuraduría General de la Nación y la Contraloría General de la República.25 Cúcuta está conectada por carretera con Bogotá, Bucaramanga, Valledupar, Cartagena de Indias y, por su condición fronteriza, con Venezuela. Cuenta con un terminal aéreo, el Aeropuerto Internacional Camilo Daza, y una terminal terrestre, la Central de Transportes de Cúcuta.
