St Helens is a lovely coastal town surrounded by Georges Bay on the northeast coast of Tasmania, and it is only a few kilometres from the iconic Bay of Fires beaches.
It is located 163 kilometres East of Launceston and 253 kilometres from Hobart.

St Helen's is the second largest fishing port and is known as the game fishing capital of Tasmania.
Along the streets of St Helens, there is a lovely selection of cafes, bakeries, restaurants and interesting shops. Wander along the wharf, enjoy fresh seafood or hot fish and chips, and admire the boats.
Binalong Bay and the iconic Bay of Fires Beaches are short distances from St Helens.
The Bay of Fires coastline stretches 50 kilometres from Binalong Bay in the south to Eddystone Point in the north, with beautiful white sandy beaches, orange lichen-covered rocks and aqua-blue waters.
If you head inland, you can visit St Columba Falls, Halls Falls and the Pyengana Dairy.
Further afield, you can explore Mt Paris Dam, Little Blue Lake and Evercreech Forest Reserve.

The Bay of Fires coastline stretches 50 kilometres from Binalong Bay to Eddystone Point. It is famous for its orange-coloured boulders, white sandy beaches and stunning turquoise waters.

St Columba Falls
St Columba Falls is one of Tasmania’s tallest permanent waterfalls, with the water from the George River plunging 90 metres over the rocky granite ledges. It is located in the Columba Falls State Reserve at Pyengana.

Halls Falls
Halls Falls is located along the Groom River and cascades over the rocks downstream from a hand-made 19th Century Weir. The walking track to Halls Falls is approximately 1.5 kilometres of undulating bush track through the forest.
Pyengana Dairy
Sit back and relax on the deck with a gourmet cheese platter and a Tasmanian wine or beer. Enjoy the lovely picturesque Tasmanian farm setting. And watch the cows come and go from the dairy.
Mt Paris Dam
At Mt Paris Dam, the Cascade River runs through the old pillar and slab dam, surrounded by ferns. The forest is slowly reclaiming this area. A lovely spot to wander around and through the dam walls and enjoy the relaxed lush surroundings.
Little Blue Lake
The Little Blue Lake viewing area is only a few metres off the road between Derby and Gladstone. It was initially a mine hole, and now the lake reflects a vivid aqua blue from the minerals in the base of the lake.
Evercreech Forest Reserve
Evercreech Forest Reserve is a beautiful reserve with two wonderful walks. You can explore Evercreech Falls and see the White Knights, the giant white eucalyptus Gums nestled in the stunning forest. These two short walks are fantastic.

Explore the Johnston Ridge Observatory | Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument
We often see Mount St Helens from afar, but in today’s video, we’ll journey up close to this fascinating volcano as we visit the Johnston Ridge Observatory at Mount St Helens National Monument. From Johnston Ridge Observatory, you’ll find a striking view of the Mount St Helens crater and the bizarre moonscape created by the 1980 eruption.

Johnston Ridge Observatory is about 2 hours and 15 minutes’ drive from Portland, or 3 hours’ drive from Seattle.
As of the making of this video, admission is $8/person for adults, or you can use an America the Beautiful pass.
The striking view of the blast zone is right outside the observatory visitor center doors. This is also the starting point for the popular half-mile Eruption Trail that includes interpretive signs explaining the story of the 1980 Mount St Helens eruption.
Inside the visitor center, you’ll find displays on the geologic and human story behind the 1980 eruption, including personal accounts from several survivors.
The Johnston Ridge Observatory is named for David Johnston, a USGS scientist who was stationed at the observatory location at the time of the eruption, and unfortunately died in the blast. The visitor center tells his story and those of others who were nearby and survived the eruption.
Even now, more than 40 years after the blast, the landscape is still otherworldly.
If you have more than one day in the area, I’d recommend checking out the other side of Mount St Helens, where you can walk through a lava tube cave and check out the remains of an ancient forest that was buried by lava about 2000 years ago. The trees have rotted away, but hollow spaces remain where they once stood.

What I found on Mt. St. Helens 37 years after the eruption
This has been amazing to explore! Climbing to the top of Mt. St Helens and looking down into the massive crater below was a truly amazing bucket list item for me. It was the hardest climb of my life, but absolutely worth it. However I had no idea of the unbelievable magnitude of destruction the eruption left below the mountain. St. Helens erupted May 18th 1980 with such force that it changed the surrounding landscape and destroyed everything in it. Finding all the mangled abandoned trucks still sitting on the county side and walking through the lava tubes was just as incredible as being able to finally climb to the top of the mountain to see it for myself.

Spirit Lake was an amazing place to canoe, and the views of the mountain were spectacular. Today, Mount Saint Helens shows a new kind of beauty, and is known as a national volcanic monument. I hope you enjoy this spectacular footage of the mountain my family has enjoyed so much over the years.
Footage was shot with a 4K camera mounted to an Autel Robotics Drone. Johnston's Ridge Observatory is located in what is believed to be the exact spot he was standing on that fateful day of May, 18, 1980. His words at 8:32am screamed over the radio, Vancouver, Vancouver, this is it! It sent chills up our spine as we listened from home. We were more than 30 miles away to the east, but the plume from the blast was immediately visible, and the sky filled with a dark cloud within moments. It was eerie to think that the voice of David Johnston was forever silent.
Here's an excerpt from Wikipedia: David Alexander Johnston (December 18, 1949 – May 18, 1980) was an American USGS volcanologist who was killed by the 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Washington. A principal scientist on the USGS monitoring team, Johnston was killed in the eruption while manning an observation post 6 miles (10 km) away on the morning of May 18, 1980. He was the first to report the eruption, transmitting Vancouver! Vancouver! This is it! before he was swept away by a lateral blast. Despite a thorough search, Johnston's body was never found, but state highway workers discovered remnants of his USGS trailer in 1993.
Johnston's career took him across the United States, where he studied the Augustine Volcano in Alaska, the San Juan volcanic field in Colorado, and long-extinct volcanoes in Michigan. Johnston was a meticulous and talented scientist, known for his analyses of volcanic gases and their relationship to eruptions. This, along with his enthusiasm and positive attitude, made him liked and respected by many co-workers. After his death, other scientists lauded his character, both verbally and in dedications and letters. Johnston felt scientists must do what is necessary, including taking risks, to help protect the public from natural disasters. His work, and that of fellow USGS scientists convinced authorities to close Mount St. Helens to the public before the 1980 eruption. They maintained the closure despite heavy pressure to re-open the area; their work saved thousands of lives. His story became intertwined within the popular image of volcanic eruptions and their threat to society, and a part of volcanology's history. To date, Johnston, along with Harry Glicken, is one of two American volcanologists known to have died in a volcanic eruption.
Following his death, Johnston was commemorated in several ways, including a memorial fund established in his name at the University of Washington to fund graduate-level research. Two volcano observatories were established and named after him: one in Vancouver, Washington, and another on the ridge where he died. Johnston's life and death are featured in several documentaries, films, docudramas and books. Along with others who died during the eruption, Johnston's name is inscribed on memorials dedicated to their memory.

We visited the Johnston Ridge Observatory and hiked out to Devil’s Point on the Boundary trail to take in the views of the mountain, the Toutle Valley and Spirit Lake where trees blown over from the explosion can still be seen.
