MYANMAR (BURMA) visit to Sagaing hill and market

From our hotel in Mandalay we visited the local market and hill pagoda U Min Thonze.
The city is the capital of the Sagaing Region of Myanmar. It is located in the Irrawaddy River, 20 km (12 mi) to the south-west of Mandalay on the opposite bank of the river. Sagaing with numerous Buddhist monasteries is an important religious and monastic center. The pagodas and monasteries crowd the numerous hills along the ridge running parallel to the river. The central pagoda, Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda, is connected by a set of covered staircases that run up the 240 m (790 ft) hill.

The BEST Things to do IN MANDALAY, MYANMAR

The 5 best things to do within 24 hours in magical Mandalay, Myanmar!

With a short 24 hours in Mandalay, this is how I made the most of it and did the best there is to do in the city:

1. U Bein Bridge for Sunrise

This bridge is popular for sunset, but if you want to escape the crowd, I am happy to share that sunrise is just as, if not more perfect there!

2. Kuthodaw Pagoda

The beginning of our pagoda party! Get lost in rows and rows of white pagodas that house the world's largest book at Kuthodaw Pagoda. In each pagoda you'll see inscriptions on large stone slabs in seemingly endless rows.

3. Inwa, the Ancient Capital

I loved exploring the wooden monastery, and the exterior may remind one of Angkor Was in Cambodia. There's a 10,000 kyat entrance fee, plus 1000 for the boat that takes you across to the ruins and back. Once you're there, getting around is limited to just horse-drawn carriages for 15,000 kyat. This is something to keep in mind, for sure!

4. Umin Thonse - 30 Caves Pagoda

This one was really beautiful and intriguing! Each gold-framed doorway leads to a Buddha statue inside, and the whole area has a beautiful view.

5. Hsinbyume Pagoda

This is definitely the cherry on top. Unlike any other religious site in the world, it's open to explore, walk on, and enjoy. It also looks very much like a beautiful wedding cake (watch the vlog to see what I mean!).

top 5 Things You Must Do in Mandalay

When visiting Mandalay, there are several must-see attractions and activities that can make your trip enjoyable and memorable. Here are the top five things you must do in Mandalay to have a smooth and fun experience:

Explore the Mandalay Palace: Start your journey by visiting the Mandalay Palace, the former royal residence of the last Burmese monarchy. Explore the intricate architecture, beautiful gardens, and learn about the history of Myanmar. Don't forget to visit the surrounding moat and watch the changing of the guards.

Visit the Mahamuni Pagoda: This sacred Buddhist temple houses the highly revered Mahamuni Buddha image. Join the locals in their daily rituals of offering gold leaf to the Buddha statue and soak in the spiritual atmosphere. The pagoda complex also features beautiful sculptures, shrines, and prayer halls.

Discover the U Bein Bridge: Head to Amarapura, a nearby township, to witness the world's longest teakwood bridge, U Bein Bridge. Enjoy a serene walk along the bridge during sunset or take a boat ride on Taungthaman Lake for breathtaking views. The scenic surroundings make it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts.

Explore the Ancient Cities: Mandalay is surrounded by ancient cities like Inwa (Ava), Sagaing, and Mingun, each offering unique historical and cultural experiences. Take a horse-drawn carriage ride in Inwa to explore ancient temples and monasteries, visit the numerous pagodas in Sagaing, and see the unfinished Mingun Pagoda and the world's largest ringing bell.

Sunset at Mandalay Hill: Hike or take a vehicle up Mandalay Hill to witness a mesmerizing sunset over the city. From the top, you can enjoy panoramic views of Mandalay, its surrounding mountains, and the Irrawaddy River. The hilltop also houses several temples and pagodas, including the famous Sutaungpyei Pagoda.

To enhance your experience further, consider trying traditional Burmese cuisine, browsing the local markets for handicrafts and souvenirs, and catching a traditional puppet show or a traditional dance performance. Don't forget to interact with the friendly locals, as they can provide valuable insights into the culture and history of Mandalay.

2500 PAGODAS: WHY KAKKU PAGODAS, MYANMAR IS A MUST-SEE

Magical Kakku Pagodas with 2500 pagodas to explore!

The Kakku Pagodas is the perfect off the beaten path alternative to the usual Inle Lake and temple tour. Most of the pagodas were constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries and many of them have been restored after suffering earthquake damage. They are also quite the perfect backdrop for photos, so if you are a history buff in search for a unique, lesser-known place to visit in Myanmar, this is the perfect place to go!
