Birding Colombia: Exploring the country with the world's highest bird count

With over 1,900 avian species—more than any other country in the world—Colombia is a birder’s paradise waiting to be discovered. Having just returned from Colombia, Debbie Jordan shares the latest news and reviews the birding hotspots, with a focus on the Central Andes region, including the Rio Claro Natural Reserve, Nevado del Ruiz, Rio Blanco Reserve, and Otún Quimbaya Flora and Fauna Sanctuary. This webinar presents the preferred birding areas and birding trails developed by National Audubon as part of their International Alliances Program.

Colombia Birding Trip Photos

Some photos from the first part of a long 25 days birding trip in Colombia, from the Eastern Andes paramo to the Central Andes then Santa Marta. Included here are only a few birds from the Chingaza N.P., Fuerte's Parrot Reserve, Rio Blanco Reserve, Los Nevados N.P., Hacienda El Bosque Reserve, Montezuma Reseve, Rio Claro N.P., and El Puiji Reserve. There were lots of special birds to photo but I have let go and also on Day 8 I left the battery charger in the hotel.

CHOOSING THE BEST FIELDGUIDE TO THE BIRDS IN COLOMBIA.(Bird identification Colombia)

This video will Help you decide which Birding fieldguide to buy for your birding experience in Colombia. I have been a Birding guide in Colombia for many years and i haved used the most 3 books, written by Steven Hilty, Miles Mcmullan and Fernando Ayerbe. All the participants from our tours allways ask me: ¿Which fieldguide should I get? ¿ Which is the best bird identification book?. The idea is to show you the features of the fieldguides available so that you can choose wisely. If you like this video don't forget to give a thumbs up and subscribe for more quality content about birding.
Let us know what do you think about this video, did it help you? Do you have any suggestions? Do you want me to talk abbout any other Birding Topic? Is there something you want to know before your visit to Colombia that maybe we can talk about in our next Video? We really apreciate your comments and suggestions.
Cheers!

Huge antpitta coming to feeders!

This video was made during our 2 weeks May trip for a great USFWS group birding in C & W Andes plus Cauca Valley; landslides made us detour and add some Magdalena Valley birds and specialties that didn't hurt anyone ;-)

Almost ~550 species in two weeks!

COMPLETE photo album at:

Basically, the main difference of this trip with any other company ones is that we got AMAZING views of Hooded Antpitta! - for almost a complete minute a neat Grallaricula cucullata was perched some ~10m from us giving us the very best show possible!.... check the shots inside the Flickr set/album!

Buff-tailed Coronet - Boissonneaua flavescens - Rio Blanco, C Andes

Close-up of this near-endemic hummer... This video was made during our last November trip for SUNRISE BIRDING in Colombia; after the 2 weeks with me in the Andes they spent an additional week at Santa Marta and Guajira lowlands with Waly as a guide.

Near-endemic Buff-tailed Coronet - Boissonneaua flavescens - Rio Blanco, C Andes [no HD]

This couple of videos are from the near-endemic beautiful hummingbird Buff-tailed Coronet (Boissonneaua flavescens) taken at Rio Blanco Reserve in the Central Andes of Colombia. This is my first test/comparison of High Definition (HD) video using my Canon PowerShot SX210IS. Compare this clip made in regular quality (640x480, 30fps) vs. the other one made in HD at 1280x720, 30fps. This clip is only half size in kilobytes than the HD one... I will have to get an external bigger hard disk soon ;-)

This video was made while our September Tanagers-focused trip in the W & C Andes where we got 64 species of this family!...
Photos available on Flickr at:

Endemic Brown-banded Antpitta - Grallaria milleri - Rio Blanco, C Andes
