The ULTIMATE Travel Guide: Santiago de Compostela

Santiago De Compostela Travel Guide, Santiago De Compostela Tour, Santiago De Compostela Travel

Every year for centuries, thousands of pilgrims have traveled the Saint James' Way, arriving at Galicia's capital and entering the famed Cathedral. The relics of James the Apostle, found in the ninth century, are believed by tradition to be interred here. However, Santiago de Compostela is a very vibrant city with a variety of other things to do for tourists, pilgrims included: countless eateries and bars where you can sample delectable Galician seafood, an old town centre that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, provocative contemporary art, etc. This city, which blends history with a more contemporary side, offers a lot to do.

10 Things to do in Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela is not just the final point of the Camino de Santiago, it is a fantastic place to explore, wandering around its alleys and stone-paved streets. As some Galicians say, Santiago is not a city, it is a 'big village'. The city population is just around the 100,000 mark but with nearly 50,000 students settling there for the academic year and thousands of pilgrims walking into town every year.

I think Santiago is a great city but I'm obviously biased. I lived in Santiago (or 'Compostela') for four years while studying at the city's University (one of the oldest in the world by the way.
10 things to do in Santiago de Compostela:

1-Cathedral

If you have walked all the way to Santiago de Compostela, your first stop is likely to be the Praza do Obradoiro with its imposing Cathedral, where the remains of Saint James are (allegedly) buried. The cathedral is Santiago's most famous building with a Romanesque structure and later Gothic and Baroque elements. At the Cathedral, check out the Pórtico da Gloria (the original Romanesque porch entrance by Mestre Mateo), the Botafumeiro (its giant thurible) and, if you are not scared of heights, ask to walk up to the Cathedral's rooftop to enjoy fantastic panoramic views of Santiago.

2-The Old Town

Santiago is divided in two main districts: the Old Town (Zona Vella) and the New Town (Zona Nova).

The Old Town with is winding granite streets, arches, squares and monuments has been an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. Here you will find not only Romanesque and baroque churches, museums and some of the oldest University buildings but also many cosy cafes, traditional and contemporary restaurants, interesting shops and some of the best nightlife too!

3-Alameda Park

Take a breather at the Alameda, Santiago's most emblematic green space. Go for a stroll along the Paseo da Ferradura, get a nice tree-framed view of the Cathedral, sit by the statue of writer Valle Inclán or take a picture with the statue of 'As Marías', the two Fandiño sisters dressed in their colourful outfits. The sisters used to go for a walk in the Alameda every day at 2 o'clock on the dot. The Alameda park is also central point to many celebrations in Santiago's busy festival calendar.

4-'De Viños' -- Wine trail

Rúa do Franco goes all the way to the Obradoiro Square and takes its name after the French pilgrims that used to follow this street to get to the Cathedral. With adjacent Raíña, this is the most famous street to go out for a few drinks with friends. Many bars and restaurants along the Franco display their octopus, shellfish and other Galician delicacies on their windows (vegetarians beware!) and most offer a free bite with each drink: croquettes, tortilla or even tiger filet (not really tiger meat, by the way).

5-Museo das Peregrinacións

After walking to Santiago as a pilgrim, you should probably visit this museum, dedicated to the pilgrimage.

6-San Domingos de Bonaval Park

'Bonaval' for short, is another popular park in Santiago de Compostela. Bonaval sits on the grounds of a Dominican convent's old cemetery and has been re-invented into a secluded public green space by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza. Next to Bonaval you'll find two of Santiago's best museums: the CGAC (Galician Contemporary Art Centre) in a modern building also by Siza and the Museum of the Galician People (Museo do Pobo Galego) in the former convent.

7-Mercado de Abastos

9-Festas

Festas da Ascensión in May and Festas do Apóstolo in July are the main celebrations in Santiago, with outdoor concerts and many other events taking place, some of them free of charge. However, there are many more festivals in and around the different neighbourhoods in Santiago.

10-Try octopus

You can't leave Santiago (or Galicia) without trying the land's most iconic dish: octopus. The Galicians call it octopus fair style ('pulpo á feira') as it used to be a dish eaten on market day; while Spaniards like to call it octopus Galician style.

Places to see in ( Galicia - Spain ) Portico de la Gloria

Places to see in ( Galicia - Spain ) Portico de la Gloria

The Portal of Glory (Pórtico da Gloria) of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral is a Romanesque portico and the cathedral's main gate created by Master Mateo and his workshop, on the orders of King Ferdinand II of León. The king donated to Mateo one hundred maravedís annually between 1168 and 1188. To commemorate its completion in 1188, the date was carved on a stone set in the cathedral and on the lintel that supports the richly ornamental tympanum. Under the contract made in 1168, if Mateo was to renege on the deal to create the portico at any time, he would have to pay 1,000 gold pieces (aureos). The complete three-piece set took until 1211 to completely finish; when the cathedral was consecrated in the presence of King Alfonso IX of León.

Originally projected as a four-part division, it was modified into a three-part format, which changed the proportions of the entire portal. With over 200 Romanesque style sculptures, the portico is the artistic high-point of the cathedral and often considered the greatest work of Spanish Romanesque sculpture. The Pórtico de la Gloria consists of an inner double-arched porch and finished with an outer western façade. The lateral archivolts were left undecorated, which might have been due to time restraints to finish the gate for the Jubilee of 1182 and formal procession of pilgrims.

The pure Romanesque fabric was altered slightly and later encased with a Baroque facade. Before the facade was erected, the portico would be seen from afar and would take pilgrims up a large flight of stairs to approach it. Without door valves, the three large arches were decorated with angels and foliage and framed the ciborium and altar at the end of the nave. Prophets and apostles form the columns and jambs welcoming pilgrims inside the church.

Though the portal was originally poly-chromed, the numerous traces of the remaining paint seen today are due to later interventions. Records show that the portico was repainted often with contracts surviving from the fifteenth and seventeenth centuries. Two types of paintings are distinguishable now on the structure. On some of the figures, the paint is powdery; the colors are light, soft and clear without any additional ornaments. This dates back to the fifteenth or sixteenth century. The more enamel-like painting is harsher and darker with ornamental patterns dated back to the 17th century in a similar style to offering boxes in 1656.

Concealed now by the Churrigueresque west front, the porch or narthex is no longer viewable from the exterior. The church is responsible for the preservation of the portal to this day. The doors were never closed day or night in the Middle Ages.

???????? Porto Marin | Walking Spain - Walk Galicia | Virtual Tour

Walking Spain
The town of Puertomarín was born and grew next to a Roman bridge over the Miño river (rebuilt in the Middle Ages) and the Camino de Santiago. On May 18, 1212, the Order of San Juan granted privileges for its government and administration to the town.

Saint Nicholas Church
When the Belesar reservoir was built in 1962, the town moved to neighboring Monte do Cristo. Some of the most important buildings, both civil and religious, were rebuilt there; especially the church of San Nicolás, in Romanesque style built by the Hospitaller Order of San Juan de Jerusalén, whose stones were numbered and reassembled in their current location.

In the seasons when the level of the swamp drops, the remains of the old buildings, the boardwalk and the primitive bridge are still visible.

In addition to being known for its landscape, Puertomarín also has very good brandy, which has received numerous awards. On Easter day the brandy is made there, in the square in front of the church, at the Festa do Augardente.

In 2015, in the approval by Unesco of the extension of the Camino de Santiago in Spain to «Caminos de Santiago de Compostela: French Camino and Caminos del Norte de España

Via de la Plata 10/10, from Ourense to Santiago de Compostela, last 100km | CaminoWays.com

It starts in the city of Ourense and finishes in Santiago de Compostela. Through the green and hilly lands of Galicia, you will have the chance to meet the locals in their day to day life, and visit sleepy villages, churches and other places of interest. As you reach some altitude (never really challenging) the views over the country-side are sumptuous.
