A Valencia Spain Wine Country Tour - (Requena-Utiel)
Spain's wine tours are amazing! We are headed out to the Valencia, Spain wine country called Requena-Utiel. The region which has been growing grapes and producing wines since the 7th Century BC, is well known for the Bobal grape. This grape type is grown in 80% of the wineries in this region, also the wines produced here are protected by its own designation of origin (Requena-Utiel).
In this episode we hop on a mini tour bus and explore Valencia's wine region. Our tour guide takes us to two wineries where we taste some of the best wines in the area.
The first Valencia Spain winery is Murviedro, where we get to explore the underground caves where the ancient civilizations would produce and store the wines centuries ago. We then head up to the VIP room where we get the best views of the quaint city while we sip away on Cava (Spanish Champagne) and some other delicious wines.
Next we head over to the next winery VERA Estenas. This is a family owned vineyard and estate that has been producing wines for generations. We tour the winery with and get to pick some grapes and stomp them!
After that workout we sit down for a mega course lunch overlooking the vineyards and enjoy unlimited vino with some new friends!

Requena is about an hour’s drive from Valencia, during your drive you can enjoy beautiful views such as the mountains, orange trees and of course the vineyards. The region has been producing wine for many years and the old centre “La Villa” of Requena is Spanish heritage. A real must is a visit to my favourite Bodega, a family vineyard where the family members are happy to explain and welcome you warmly in their Bodega. They do not only produce wine but also olive oil and cosmetic product from the grapes. And the winery is absolutely stunning with art all around.
Like any passionate wine lover, this is our favorite trip outside Valencia! If you like wine, this is definitely a tour for you!

Today in Valencia we head down to the famous, El Cabanyal neighborhood. El Cabanyal was just ranked one of the top 10 barrios in all of Europe, and its easy to see why,
Here in Valencia you have to make a choice, live in the city, or live close to the beach. Although Valencia is an easy city to bike around and there is a tram that runs from the beach to the city, it can seem very far away to live in El Cabanyal. But we can see the draw. This old fisherman's village is very eclectic, cute and great access to the beach.
This is one of the hottest neighborhoods in Valencia for good reason.
In this episode, we head down and show you some of this neighborhood in Valencia. We stop and get some food and drinks as usual and head down to the beach just before sunset.
The only serious mistake we make is trying to get into the popular restaurants on a Friday night without a reservation . So join us as we explore El Cabanyal here in Valencia.

Requena, Barrio de la Villa, Valencia
Requena es un municipio español situado en la parte oriental de la comarca Requena-Utiel, en la provincia de Valencia, en la Comunidad Valenciana. Históricamente ha pertenecido a Castilla y su territorio es conocido como la Valencia Castellana. Su término municipal se extiende por una gran parte de la cuenca superior del río Magro y es uno de los más extensos de España con una superficie de 814 km cuadrados, siendo el mayor término municipal de la Comunidad Valenciana. Cuenta con 20 621 habitantes (INE 2015).
El relieve se caracteriza por la prolongación de la meseta castellana en la provincia de Valencia, una llanura con algunas sierras que las separan de las comarcas adyacentes. El límite suroccidental lo marca el río Cabriel con profundas gargantas. Por el sureste se eleva la Sierra Martés, que con una altura máxima de 1086 metros es una de las últimas elevaciones del Sistema Ibérico y hace de límite con el valle del Júcar (comarca del valle de Ayora). Al este, la Sierra de las Cabrillas, otra elevación del Sistema Ibérico valenciano, conecta con la comarca de Hoya de Buñol. Por el noreste, la Sierra del Negrete, con los picos del Tejo (1250 metros), Cinco Pinos (1177 metros) y Juan Navarro (1164 metros), la separan de las serranías del Turia (comarca de Los Serranos). Finalmente, por el noroeste y el este tiene continuación la altiplanicie de la Plana de Utiel. El río Magro es uno de los accidentes más destacados de la comarca, que procedente de Utiel discurre entre las sierras del sureste hacia el río Júcar.
El núcleo urbano se alza a 692 metros sobre el nivel del mar.
Historia
Fundación
Las excavaciones arqueológicas realizadas en el interior de la Fortaleza y en la Plaza del Castillo (antigua Plaza de Armas) con motivo de la rehabilitación de ambas, permitieron fijar los primeros indicios de población y el origen de la ciudad en el siglo VII a. C., debido a la presencia de esculturas y cerámicas de la 1ª Edad del Hierro-Ibérico Antiguo.
En dichas excavaciones se halló además una gran habitación de planta rectangular y una serie de hogares de arcilla asociados a ella, así como cerámicas típicas de este período; tinajas, lebes, ánforas, etc. lisas o decoradas del Ibérico Pleno, siglos IV-III a. C.
Era romana
Otro momento cronológico corresponde a la época Imperial Romana de entre los siglos II a. C. al II d. C. basado en la recuperación de materiales de construcción como tejas, ladrillos romboidales, ánforas, así como una serie de silos de planta circular junto a un horno de fábrica de ladrillos y mortero de cal. También se hallaron tres aljibes con muro y pavimentos de Opus Signinum.[cita requerida]
Era musulmana
Entra a formar parte de los reinos musulmanes siendo conocida la ciudad como Rakka'na, y ya aparece así citada documentalmente en las crónicas sobre los itinerarios seguidos por las tropas del Califato de Córdoba a mediados del siglo X.
Desde 1201, la población fortificada de Requena marcó la divisoria entre los reinos de Valencia y Toledo. La Villa fue el primitivo asentamiento y núcleo de población de la ciudad, cuya estructura responde claramente al prototipo de las ciudades hispano-musulmanas. Una de las claves de la historia de Requena fue la función defensiva que tenía, además de ser una ciudad codiciada por su estratégica situación entre la meseta y el litoral.
Reconquista y Edad Media
Fernando III el Santo conquista Requena muy posiblemente en el año 1238, el mismo en que D. Jaime I el Conquistador entra triunfalmente en Valencia. En Requena se entrevistan los monarcas aragonés y castellano. Uno de los varios encuentros habidos con motivo de los litigios de frontera que tuvieron ambos reinos, y que finalizan con la cesión de D. Jaime a su yerno Alfonso X el Sabio, de la plaza de Requena, al igual que hizo con Cartagena y Murcia.
El 4 de agosto de 1257, tras la ocupación cristiana de la ciudad por castellanos, recibe de manos de Alfonso X de Castilla la carta puebla y el Fuero de Cuenca para su autogobierno en calidad de territorio de realengo, entrando a formar parte del Reino de Castilla, organizándose la comarca en forma de Comunidad de Villa y Tierra con capital en Requena y convirtiéndose en aduana de Castilla; eclesiásticamente esta zona quedará adscrita al Obispado de Cuenca hasta 1955. En 1264 recibe la concesión de Puerto Seco y Almojarifazgo, por el ganado, la lana y el trigo que pasaban de Castilla a Aragón y viceversa.
En 1369 es ocupada por el rey de Aragón Pedro IV el Ceremonioso, volviendo a manos de Castilla en 1372 con Enrique II. Casi cien años después, en 1467, es nuevamente tomada por el Marqués de Villena.
En 1355 Pedro I (el Cruel, o el Justiciero) segrega Requena de Utiel, otorgándole la carta puebla y el título de Leal Villa.

Amazing day trip from Valencia to one of the best wineries in this region
I came across this paradise due to change of plans and I did not regret it. However, even the most amazing place is not perfect. We took off from Joaquin Sorolla station to Utiel-Raquena region. It looks a lot like Tuscany or Southern France, but it is in Spain indeed. The winery and the poetic landscape was undeniable. The history and the tradition of growing the grapes and creating the wine has always fascinated me, but we encountered a few problems on the way.

En dichas excavaciones se halló además una gran habitación de planta rectangular y una serie de hogares de arcilla asociados a ella, así como cerámicas típicas de este período; tinajas, lebes, ánforas, etc. lisas o decoradas del Ibérico Pleno, siglos IV-III a. C.
Era romana
Otro momento cronológico corresponde a la época Imperial Romana de entre los siglos II a. C. al II d. C. basado en la recuperación de materiales de construcción como tejas, ladrillos romboidales, ánforas, así como una serie de silos de planta circular junto a un horno de fábrica de ladrillos y mortero de cal. También se hallaron tres aljibes con muro y pavimentos de Opus Signinum.[cita requerida]
Era musulmana
Entra a formar parte de los reinos musulmanes siendo conocida la ciudad como Rakka'na, y ya aparece así citada documentalmente en las crónicas sobre los itinerarios seguidos por las tropas del Califato de Córdoba a mediados del siglo X.
Desde 1201, la población fortificada de Requena marcó la divisoria entre los reinos de Valencia y Toledo. La Villa fue el primitivo asentamiento y núcleo de población de la ciudad, cuya estructura responde claramente al prototipo de las ciudades hispano-musulmanas. Una de las claves de la historia de Requena fue la función defensiva que tenía, además de ser una ciudad codiciada por su estratégica situación entre la meseta y el litoral.
Reconquista y Edad Media
Fernando III el Santo conquista Requena muy posiblemente en el año 1238, el mismo en que D. Jaime I el Conquistador entra triunfalmente en Valencia. En Requena se entrevistan los monarcas aragonés y castellano. Uno de los varios encuentros habidos con motivo de los litigios de frontera que tuvieron ambos reinos, y que finalizan con la cesión de D. Jaime a su yerno Alfonso X el Sabio, de la plaza de Requena, al igual que hizo con Cartagena y Murcia.
El 4 de agosto de 1257, tras la ocupación cristiana de la ciudad por castellanos, recibe de manos de Alfonso X de Castilla la carta puebla y el Fuero de Cuenca para su autogobierno en calidad de territorio de realengo, entrando a formar parte del Reino de Castilla, organizándose la comarca en forma de Comunidad de Villa y Tierra con capital en Requena y convirtiéndose en aduana de Castilla; eclesiásticamente esta zona quedará adscrita al Obispado de Cuenca hasta 1955. En 1264 recibe la concesión de Puerto Seco y Almojarifazgo, por el ganado, la lana y el trigo que pasaban de Castilla a Aragón y viceversa.
En 1369 es ocupada por el rey de Aragón Pedro IV el Ceremonioso, volviendo a manos de Castilla en 1372 con Enrique II. Casi cien años después, en 1467, es nuevamente tomada por el Marqués de Villena.
En 1355 Pedro I (el Cruel, o el Justiciero) segrega Requena de Utiel, otorgándole la carta puebla y el título de Leal Villa.
