Best Walks in Kent - Ramsgate to Margate (through Broadstairs) -Best Breakfast in Ramsgate

Join me as I walk from Ramsgate to Broadstairs and then on to Margate for a 10 mile walk along the North Kent coast. Only an hour and a half from London on the train this makes a great day trip to explore a beautiful area with white cliffs, sandy bays and traditional seaside towns, There are also so many places to stop and eat on the way, plus lots if history including Charles Dickens' Bleak House. You just need to get out of your front door to explore and get some great exercise to make yourself feel so much better about life.

RAMSGATE

Ramsgate is a seaside town with a fantastic Marina and beach so we take a walk along the seafront to see what's there! We've been asked so many times to film Ramsgate and we're delighted to do this one as we agree its' one of the grandest seaside towns in England!

Ramsgate has historic architecture, pretty streets, a sandy beach, and—thanks to George IV—the only royal harbor in the United Kingdom. It's easy to get here by car or train from the capital, and makes a great day trip to the seaside near London.

Ramsgate
Here at the very edge of the Garden of England, three Georgian and Victorian resorts, each with its own distinctive character – Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate – cluster around the bays at the far end of the peninsula. There’s a retro feel to these harbour towns, miles of low chalk cliffs edge the peninsula, sheltering a string of secluded, unspoilt sandy bays. For the ultimate experience, you can cycle or hike on the Viking Coastal Trail, along a stunning shoreline and through tranquil lanes.

Perhaps being so close to Europe helps infuse Ramsgate with a cosmopolitan vibe. A bustling Royal harbour borders a yacht-packed marina, awash with history and overflowing with continental charm, it’s a must-see historic port.

South-facing Ramsgate is proud of its status as England's only Royal Harbour and boasts its own Meridian Line. Five minutes and 41 seconds ahead of GMT, you'll find it in the Maritime Museum, along with artefacts evoking the town's rich heritage of fishing, shipbuilding and shipwrecks. For something a bit different head to The Micro Museum, to find out about the history and ideas that led to the invention of the home computer. Take a tour underground at Ramsgate Tunnels a unique civilian wartime tunnel complex.

Ramsgate's compelling past includes landings by Anglo-Saxons, Romans and Saints - it is also part of the historic Confederation of Cinque Ports. Fine architecture peppers the town - elegant Georgian terraces and impressive Regency villas. Visit The Grange, the first so-called 'modern' house, built by architect Augustus Pugin, who designed the interiors of the House of Parliament. His and his sons' works dot the town - track them down on a self-guided tour.

Don't miss the Pugin and St Augustine Visitor Centre and Shrine, celebrating the first Archbishop of Canterbury - St Augustine who landed at Ebbsfleet in 597AD bringing Christianity back to England.

In Ramsgate, the water is irresistible. Hop on a boat trip to spot seals basking on the Goodwin Sands or discover gorgeous beaches and bays. Bask yourself in the warmth of the exquisitely restored, Georgian Italianate Glasshouse, situated in King George VI Park.

Superb walking trails lead from the bustling port to the exhilarating cliffs; walk the coastal path to Broadstairs, or head south on the epic Saxon Shore Way to bird and wildlife-rich Pegwell Bay Country Park. What better way to discover the town and surrounding area than on an Active Ramsgate, walking route.

Alternatively enjoy sitting at one of the waterfront bars or restaurants is a delight with a cosmopolitan feel.

The events calendar is bursting with annual and new events – Bucket and Spade Run, Battles for Victory, Ramsgate Week, Addington Street Fair, Christmas Illuminations and many more all waiting to entertain you

Ramsgate's main attraction is its coastline, and its main industries are tourism and fishing. The town has one of the largest marinas on the English south coast, and the Port of Ramsgate provided cross-channel ferries for many years.

Top 10 walks | Sandy bays of Ramsgate to Margate Beach | Drone ???????? Hiking UK | England Great walks

Easy coastal walk with fine cliff top views, 3 classic seaside resorts, and a number of stunning sandy bays and coves that make it a great swimming walk.

Top 10 walks in South East England
Length 15.7 km (9.8 miles)

This is a gentle coastal walk linking 3 historic coastal towns (Margate, Broadstairs, Ramsgate) on the Isle of Thanet (NE Kent). Much of the walk is along low chalk cliffs with views over the channel, with several secluded coves. At low tide, you can walk along the beach between them. The 3 resorts are very busy on sunny days, but the rest of the coast is much quieter.

This is the farthest corner of the Isle of Thanet is arguably where the east coast of England meets the south coast, though the gently curving coastline makes it hard to identify a precise turning point.

For much of the way it is possible to choose between walking on top of the 20-30 metre high chalk cliffs (cliff top level), or at low tide, walking along the beach or promenade below (beach level). Although this stretch of coast is largely built-up, there is a wide strip of open grass along most of the cliff top. The beaches are sandy and flat - the tide goes out a long way.

10 Best Tourist Attractions in Canterbury, UK

10 Best Tourist Attractions in Canterbury, UK

Our visit to Ramsgate, Kent

A day at another of Kent's charming seaside towns. This time it's Ramsgate, on Kent's east coast.

We start with the marina, before moving on to its harbour - Ramsgate's history, as a limb in the Cinque ports, dates back to 12th century. We then pop into the Sailors' Church before climbing Jacob's ladder to the West Cliff to promenade and admire the Georgian, Regency & Victorian architecture that makes Ramsgate so appealing. From here we discover some of the best of the old town, including famous names like Charles Darwin & Vincent Van Gough associated with the town.

We then head across to the East Cliff for a further promenade before heading down to the golden sands of Ramsgate's beach. Strolling past the historic Ramsgate Tunnels, and back towards the Ramsgate Maritime Museum.

We complete the journey by returning to the marina to check out Sundowner, one of the historic 'Little ships' that made up the flotilla so key in the evacuation of Dunkirk as part of Operation Dynamo.

We close with the sun setting over the marina.

Perhaps Ramsgate is another destination to add if you're planning to discover more of Kent's coastline. Does it appeal to you?

My first walking tour of my home town of Ramsgate starts at the Railway Station and continues to the East Cliff, taking in Ellington Park, Ramsgate town, the Royal Harbour and the Granville Hotel/Granville House.
Ramsgate is a small town on the Kent Coast, (the area is known as Isle of Thanet), very near Margate and Broadstairs. In the Victorian era, when people thought of seaside, just three words came to mind: Ramsgate beach Kent. Once an important military and naval base, Ramsgate has a fantastic history and lots of truly spectacular architecture.

Welcome To The Video Of Today - Visiting Ramsgate - Kent

Ramsgate was first a small farming and fishing community. When St. Augustine, a Christian missionary, arrived in Ramsgate in 597, the connection between England and the Christian church in Rome was restored. King George IV sailed from Ramsgate to Hanover in 1820. The Kent port's hospitality so impressed him that he ordered it to be designated a Royal Harbour, the only such designation in all of mainland Britain. Being the only Royal Harbour in the UK, The Harbour enjoys a special status. Ramsgate served as a major embarkation site for both the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 and the Napoleonic Wars due to its proximity to mainland Europe. Ramsgate's growth was fuelled by the seaside bathing fad of the 18th century. Princess Victoria visited frequently in the 1820s. In 1846, the first railway was built. The guest list at Ramsgate is extensive and filled with illustrious individuals, including writers Wilkie Collins and Jane Austen as well as artists George du Maurier, James Tissot, and Vincent Van Gogh. The home of famed architect Augustus Pugin, who oversaw the Gothic Revival movement and designed the interiors of the Houses of Parliament, is located on the West Cliff. He also constructed the stunning St Augustine’s Church next to The Grange, his home with a view of the ocean. Early aircraft started using Manston's vast farmlands for emergency landings in 1915–1916. Ramsgate was the target of bombing raids by Zeppelin airships during the First World War. The Royal Flying Corps was firmly established and actively contributing to England's defence by 1917. The airport was crucial to the success of RAF Manston during World War II. Ramsgate Harbour served as the primary staging area for the construction of the small ships required for Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of the British troops from Dunkirk, beginning on May 27, 1940. Ramsgate drew thousands of families throughout the 1950s and 1960s. Coachloads of tourists would arrive to enjoy the Ramsgate Main Sands and the nearby sights during their summer holiday. Ramsgate is currently experiencing a seaside town resurgence. With its continental feel, it is drawing tourists from near and far and generating a lively music and art scene. Many of these people are truly taken aback when they learn how beautiful Ramsgate is, both for its architecture and its history. The town is gaining recognition for its profusion of fine Regency, Georgian, and Victorian buildings centred around a variety of their own squares.

Attractions In Ramsgate
Ramsgate is a classic English seaside holiday destination on the Kent coast. The Grange, Spitfire and Hurricane Memorial Museum, Ramsgate Costumed Walks, Ramsgate Tunnels, Ramsgate Blitz Walks, Boulevard Amusements, and the awesome Maritime Museum are just a few of the town's attractions. You can also take strolls on the Main Sands while admiring the sea's reflection in the sky during a romantic sunset.

Accommodations In Ramsgate
For visitors looking to stay for a brief holiday, there are seafront hotels, guest houses, self-catering flats, cosy cottages, boutique B&BS and campsites in rural retreats.

Eat & Drink in Ramsgate
Alongside national brands, you'll discover a diverse selection of locally owned restaurants in this area, including fish and chip shops by the sea, restaurants on the harbour, retro ice cream parlours, and international cafes. Additionally, the number of whole food, vegetarian, and vegan restaurants is rising.

How To Reach Ramsgate
Travelling from London St. Pancras International Station to Ramsgate is quick and simple thanks to Southeastern's high-speed rail service.

swcwalks, swcwalk 101, Margate to Ramsgate. 14/10/21

An update of a decent coastal walk, first done 11 years earlier, on the Isle of Thanet. This version is undertaken in a 'clock-wise' direction, on a reasonable Autumn afternoon, starting from Margate. Thus, all the sea-views are on the walker's left.
There's the option of a low level walk, with a favourable tide, or a higher level one. Conditions enabled this walk to mix the two.
The charming resort of Broadstairs, where Dickens lived for a while, is nicely placed in the middle for lunch.
The walking is mainly on footpaths and concrete, which is easy, though a little harsh on ageing joints!
