Colombia Trike Tour - Riohacha to Dibulla
After 4 days, I pulled myself away from my sweet hotel at the beach in Riohacha to continue riding down the coast. I didn't go far. I wanted to see the flamingoes at Boca de Camarones. There is a sanctuary for fauna and flora and especially flamingoes in a very poor indigenous Wayuu community. There is also trash everywhere. I took a motorbike for 1/2 hour through sand, scrub and a Wayuu pueblo where the driver had to pay to pass. There were hundreds of flamingoes and the setting was beautiful. The next morning, the 'hotel' owner's 12 year old son took me on a bird watching tour with 3 dogs. There were lots of kids around and they all loved the trike.
(The wifi in this area is weak. It took 12 hours to upload this video.)

Una vez llegue a Riohacha en la Guajira me pregunte, que puedo hacer en Riohacha?... y la verdad encontre muchas cosas, una de ellas son sus playas, no son muy grandes, pero tienen vigilancia, y son bastante divertidas y lo mejor no hay tanta gente, jajaja... hasta el momento el viaje va muy bien así que sigan ahí chismeando.

Colombia Trike Tour - Albania to Riohacha
I needed 3 nights at the fancy Hotel Waya to feel ready to ride again. This hotel was very expensive but, sometimes, you have no choice but to pay up. Everyone said this ride was going to be very difficult with strong winds, terrible roads, lots of traffic and bandits. Luckily, none of this transpired. Except for 3 miles, the road was in fine shape and there was very little traffic with almost no wind. I arrived in Riohacha, at the coast, earlier than expected. I have now ridden from Bogotá to the Caribbean coast of Colombia. It feels great to be here.

A walk through Mercado Viejo (Old Market) in Riohacha, Guajira, Colombia.
Riohacha, Rio Hacha or Rio de la Hacha (English: River of the Axe or Axeshore - Wayuu: Süchiimma, Süchii means river, and mma means land, Riverland), is a city in the northern Caribbean Region of Colombia by the mouth of the Ranchería River and the Caribbean sea, capital city of the La Guajira Department.
Founded by conquistador Nikolaus Federmann in 1535, Riohacha was named after a local legend The legend of the Axe. Owing to the powerful rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the area is mostly desertic and inhabited by Amerindians, predominantly by members of the Wayuu ethnic group.
During colonial times Riohacha was a very important port due to the discovery of vast numbers of pearls. In the second half of the 20th Century, the city became one of Colombia's medium important, maritime commercial ports as well as a multicultural center for La Guajira Department. The city is mentioned several times in the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, twelve times in Love in the Time of Cholera, and seven times in the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold, both written by Gabriel García Márquez.
