Places to see in ( Grays Thurrock - UK )

Places to see in ( Grays Thurrock - UK )

Grays is the largest town in the borough and unitary authority of Thurrock in Essex and one of the Thurrock's traditional parishes. Grays Thurrock is approximately 20 miles (32 km) to the east of London on the north bank of the River Thames, and 2 miles (3.2 km) east of the M25 motorway. Its economy is linked to Port of London industries, its own offices, retail and Lakeside, West Thurrock. Its diversely used riverside faces Broadness Lighthouse, Broadness Point, Swanscombe, Kent.

Samuel Pepys recorded in his diary that he visited Grays on 24 September 1665 and apparently bought fish from the local fishermen. Parts of Grays and Chafford Hundred are set within three Victorian chalk pits; the largest two being the Lion Gorge, and the Warren Gorge. Another area of the Chafford Hundred residential development is built on a Victorian landfill site.

Thurrock is a Saxon name meaning the bottom of a ship. The element Grays comes from Henry de Grai, a descendant of the Norman knight Anchetil de Greye, who was granted the manor of Grays Thurrock in 1195 by Richard I. Local sites of interest include the Thameside Theatre, the Thurrock History Museum, Grays Beach and the now-disused State Cinema.

From the top of the Derby Road Bridge in Grays one can look down to Thurrock Yacht Club, Grays Beach children's playground and the River Thames. As well as Thurrock Yacht Club, Grays Beach is the site of the local landmark The Gull, a lightship built in 1860, which has lain on the foreshore for decades and is now in a serious state of dilapidation. The Thurrock Campus of South Essex College relocated to a new complex in the town centre in September 2014.

The town is approximately 20 miles (32 km) to the east of London on the north bank of the River Thames, and 2 miles (3.2 km) east of the M25 motorway its economy is linked to Port of London industries, its own offices, retail and Lakeside, West Thurrock. Its variously used riverside (from homes through wild bird-habitat marshland to importation, storage and distribution) faces Broadness Lighthouse, Broadness Point, Swanscombe, Kent.

Grays has good road links, being close to the A13 road and the M25 motorway. The A126 London Road is the main road which links Grays town centre with Lakeside Shopping Centre, Purfleet and Tilbury. Grays railway station runs through the centre of the built-up core and is served by c2c and runs between Fenchurch Street station in the City of London to the west and Shoeburyness to the east. Also Grays bus station by the station above is a hub for most bus services in Thurrock. The bus services are operated by Ensignbus, First Essex, Arriva Southend, Imperial Buses and Regal Busways.

The Other East End | Pudding Mill & Bow (4K)

Support my channel on Patreon
A walk from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park near the London Stadium past the East Bank development to Pudding Mill Lane. We cross the St. Thomas Creek of the Bow Back Rivers. From here we come to the Bow Flyover the and River Lea - one of the historic borderland areas of London.
There's an interesting historic building at 223 Bow Road which turned out to be a 17th Century listed building - more info here:
We then go through Bow Arts Alley to Grove Hall Park, once a Victorian private Asylum that features in Charles Dickens Nicholas Nickleby. The walk then goes back past Bow Church and along Bow High Street to St. Leonard's Priory. From here we go down St. Leonard's Street to Bruce Road and to Kingsley Hall in Powis Road. Kingsley Hall is where Mahatma Gandhi stayed when visiting Britain in 1931. He would take morning walks along the Sewerbank to Stratford and through Plaistow and West Ham.

Following the A12 Blackwall Tunnel Approach Road we find Bromley Hall, an early Tudor Manor House built in around 1485 and believed to be the oldest brick house in London.

This walk starts at Thorpe Bay on the Thames Estuary in Essex and heads out to Shoeburyness at where the River Thames meets the North Sea. Much of the land at the end of the estuary around Shoeburyness has been owned by the military since the 1840's and is still owned by the Ministry of Defence as an active firing range. The Broomway leads from the Wakering Stairs across Maplin Sands and is regarded as the deadliest path in Britain claiming over a hundred victims over time with many more being unrecorded.

King's Lynn Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Norfolk, and around 40 miles west, and slightly north, of Norwich, is the town of King's Lynn.

Much of King's Lynn's early growth as a settlement can be attributed to the Norman Bishop of Norwich, Herbert de Losinga. For several centuries, the town was known as Bishop's Lynn, prior to it being renamed King's Lynn by Henry VIII in 1537. The 'Lynn' component of its name is thought to be derived from the Celtic word for a lake or pool (same derivation as 'llyn' in Welsh, meaning lake).

The origins of King's Lynn Minster date back to 1101 when Bishop de Losinga founded a Benedictine priory here. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century, the building was saved and repurposed as a parish church. In 2011 it would be renamed from St Margaret's Church to King's Lynn Minster. The building we see today dates from the 12th to 15th centuries, with major restoration work to the nave during the 18th century.

Also in 1101 Bishop de Losinga granted Bishop's Lynn the right to a Saturday market, along with an annual fair. Hence, the street adjacent to King's Lynn Minster is named Saturday Market Place. In 1204 a separate charter was granted by King John. This allowed it, among other things, to create a merchant's guild, paving the way for it to become one of the largest and busiest ports in the country. A statue of King John stands on New Conduit Street.

Owing to its position at the mouth of the River Great Ouse, Bishop's Lynn, as it was still known, grew rapidly as a port town. It would play a key role in the Hanseatic League - a confederation of merchant guilds and market towns in North Germany and neighbouring countries around the Baltic Sea. These towns did much trade Bishop's Lynn around this period, as is reflected in the architecture around town which includes various 15th century buildings from when the Hanseatic League was around its peak.

In 1529 another charter was granted to the town by Henry VIII. This is believed to be the origin of the Tuesday Market, located at the northern end of the town. Henry would later rename the town from Bishop's Lynn to King's Lynn as he wrested control from the bishop in 1537.

With the discovery of the North American continent towards the end of the 15th century, King's Lynn's significance as a port town dropped as western ports like Bristol grew as a consequence. Nevertheless, it was still a major centre for importing wine from Spain, Portugal and France from the 17th century. Additionally, a shipbuilding industry was being established around this time. Custom House (featured before the 11-minute mark) was built in 1683 and functioned, not only for customs as the name implies, but also as a merchant's exchange, at least up until the early 18th century.

In 1757 George Vancouver was born in King's Lynn. In the 1790s he charted the northwestern Pacific coast of North America. Several places are named after Vancouver, perhaps most notably, the city in British Columbia.

In 1847 the railway arrived in King's Lynn. Today this is situated at the northern terminus of the Fen Line connecting to Cambridge.

King's Lynn is represented in sport by King's Lynn Town Football Club. Founded in 2010, they are a phoenix club after a former incarnation, King's Lynn F.C., folded during the previous year after financial difficulties.

Famous people from King's Lynn include Queen drummer Roger Taylor and Formula One driver Martin Brundle.

British Rail Purfleet March 1986

Another vid from my early filming days now, Purfleet Station filmed on 19 march 1986. Here we see a mix of passenger & freight traffic with classes 08, 47, 56, 59 & 302s. The class 59's hadn't long been introduced (reason for my trip out) and you can see the GM techie guys in the rear cab of the loco. Note that when delivered the original four were all un-named. There was still a lot of oil traffic around then and Purfleet even had a Gronk out-stationed from Stratford to shunt rakes of wagons as seen here. The passenger service was in the hands of the long serving class 302 EMUs. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!
