MOJACAR - Is this Spain’s prettiest town? Van Life Spain ????????
Mojácar, the white washed village on the coast of the Spanish province of Almería is a popular destination for holiday makers as well as for people who are looking to live permanently under the Spanish sun.
Mojacar was declared one of Spain’s prettiest towns in 2003, and it’s no wonder why. With more than 3000 hours of sun a year, less than 200mm of rain per year, an average yearly temperature of around 20 °C and a minimum temperature never dropping below 4 °C - we think this makes it a great place to visit any time of the year!
Mojacar is in fact made up of two parts: Mojacar Pueblo (the town) and Mojacar Playa (the beaches).
The town is an elevated mountain village of whitewashed houses located about 170 metres above sea level on a hilltop, at the end of Sierra Cabrera, in Almeria province.
Mojacar town has a long history. Back in 1488, when all the towns of the region had surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs, Alavez, the Moorish ruler of Mojacar at the time, refused to hand over the town. He reportedly said that he was as much Spanish as the Catholic Monarchs and that he didn’t want to engage in a war against Christians, but rather wanted the inhabitants of Mojacar to be treated as brothers, and not as enemies. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel accepted Alavez’s pledge of loyalty and the village kept prospering.
The town enjoyed a period of great economic prosperity after silver was discovered at the beginning of the 19th century. However, this didn’t last long and at the start of the 20th century, the silver mines closed and the town suffered wars, droughts and diseases. This led to a drastic drop in population, leaving less than 300 inhabitants living in the Mojacar area during the mid-20th century
Then, in the 1960s, the mayor of Mojacar began offering land to those who would commit to restoring the ruined town. The mayor’s proposal was extremely appealing to artists, intellectuals, and journalists from every part of the world, who fell in love with Mojacar’s location and long-time history.
Together with the renovation of Mojacar Pueblo’s houses and streets, new residential areas also began to be built along the seashore, thus giving birth to the impressive Mojacar Playa as a tourist destination that we see today.
The beaches of Mojacar are some of the most appealing along the seashores of Almeria. Almost half of the 17 km worth of sandy beaches have been granted the Blue Flag status.

Almeria Province : Hidden Secrets
Almería is the easternmost province of Andalucia. It is also the driest area in Europe and the province with the most hours of sunshine. Here you will find the desert towns around Tabernas, where many famous ‘spaghetti westerns’ were filmed and the arid, volcanic area of the Cabo de Gata. Almeria capital has some excellent beaches both for the quality of the sand and the cleanliness of the water. A little less than a kilometer from the center, the beaches begin with almost three kilometers of coastal beaches. The beaches of Almería have, most with the
accreditation of Blue Flag, for the cleanliness and the services they offer.
A part of the bath and sunbathing in the sand, there are several leisure activities that we can do on the beaches of the capital such as beach volleyball, paddle surfing or take something cool in the
numerous chiringuitos(beach bars) whether on the beach or on the seafront.
The province of Almeria offers its visitors more than 100 km of beaches and extraordinary berries: Monsul, Aguadulce, Genovese, Mojacar, Vera, San Juan de los Terreros, Cala de Enmedio, Rodalquilar, Agua Amarga and Las Salinas Beach. Cabo de Gata offers endless options to take advantage of the largest space maritime-terrestrial protected from Mediterranean.
1- Monsul Beach (San José) Despite being an almost pristine coastline and isolated from 300 meters, the beach of Monsul is very popular with tourists, families and friends. He is located in the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata.
2 - Aguadulce Beach (Roquetas de Mar) This 2,500 meter beach is one of the busiest in the south of Almeria, especially on weekends and in the summer. Its sand black and its calm waters allowed him to win the Blue Flag, reward awarded by the community European, and other awards that certify the high quality of this beach. 3.- Playa de los Genoveses (San Jose) This beautiful beach is located 2 km of the small town of San José, in the Cabo de Gata natural park. Its 1200 meters are full of fine golden sand and the absence of buildings and streets make it a completely virgin bay. The only way to access the beach is by walk a path full of bushes lavender, from where you can enjoy a wonderful view of the bay and Morrón from Los Genoveses, a promontory volcano 85 meters high.

Almeria capital has some excellent beaches both for the quality of the sand and the cleanliness of the water. A little less than a kilometer from the center, the beaches begin with almost three kilometers of coastal beaches. The beaches of Almería have, most with the

This is Almeria in Andalucia - Spain
Almería is a town and municipality of Spain, located in Andalusia. It is the capital of the province of the same name. It lies on southeastern Iberia on the Mediterranean Sea. Caliph Abd al-Rahman The third founded the city in 955. The city grew wealthy during the Islamic era, becoming a world city throughout the 11th and 12th centuries. It enjoyed an active port that traded silk, oil and raisins.
The name Almería comes from the city's former Arabic name, Madīnat al-Mariyya, meaning city of the watchtower. As the settlement was originally port or coastal suburb of Pechina, it was initially known as Mariyyat al-Bajjāna
During the Spanish Civil War the city was shelled by the German Navy, with news reaching the London and Parisian press about the criminal bombardment of Almería by German planes.
Almería surrendered in 1939, being the last Andalusian main city to fall to Francoist forces. After Franco's death and popular approval of the new Spanish Constitution, the people of southern Spain were called on to approve an autonomous status for Andalusia region in a referendum. The referendum were approved with 118,186 votes for and 11,092 votes against in Almería province, which represented 42% of all registered voters.
One of the main sights in the city is The Cathedral, which has a fortress-like appearance due to its towers, merlons and protected paths, created to defend it from Mediterranean pirates. Originally designated as a mosque, it was later converted into a Christian church, before being destroyed in the 1522 earthquake. In the 16th century it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style, whilst keeping some of its defensive features.
Paseo de Coches is a modern seaside promenade with gardens and palms.
