Places to see in ( Girona - Spain ) Lago de Puigcerda

Places to see in ( Girona - Spain ) Lago de Puigcerda

The lake of Puigcerdà is an artificial pond located in the northwest part of the municipality of Puigcerdá . The first news of the existence of this lake dates back to the thirteenth century, specifically on December 2, 1260, as described by Jaume Martí and Sanjaume in his book Dietario de Puigcerdà . In this diary a document appears where the fright of the properties of San Miguel de Cuixà in the Cerdaña yields to Arnald de Prat a land next to the pond. Citing the same source, in the work Historia de Puigcerdàand archaeological surveys carried out in 1991 by Oriol Mercadal and Jordi Campillo, were archaeological remains of a human settlement dating back to the 11th century (stone wall, rustic pavement, ceramic remains, mule horseshoe) that could have lasted until the thirteenth century.

It could be affirmed then, that the construction of the pond was carried out between the years 1200 and 1260. The water supply of the lake comes from the Querol River which is carried to Puigcerdá by means of an artificial irrigation ditch.

The great water reserve that the pond represents for Puigcerdá, has reported great benefits throughout its history. The water of the pond has been used for the extinction of fires, through different channels that were built over time.

With the end of the Carlist wars, begins in Puigcerdá the arrival of the so-called summer colony that would give way to the beginning of tourism in the municipality and in the rest of the region. Basically it was conformed by the well-off bourgeoisie of Barcelona that chose Puigcerdà like tourist center of summer. With the demolition of the walls and the implementation of the new urban plan, thanks to the initiative of Dr. Andreu (pharmacist and famous for its known tablets), began constructing luxury or Villas: Villa Eduardo, Andreu, Paulita, Maria, Dionisia (by Dr. Bufill), the Clock, Camaló tower - destroyed during the civil war -, Clausolles, among others and around the pond. This affected the new leases, in which it was determined that the improvement and maintenance works had to be adapted to give a more playful and leisurely character in the pond, especially in summer seasons. The arrival of these vacationers promoted the realization of a series of fun and festive activities that culminated in 1886 with The nocturnal party to the Venetian, precursor of theFeast of the Lake .

Hike through Roman villages & Santa Maria de Bell-Lloc|Tour de Cerdagne Dorres-Puigcerda in Pyrenees

This was our second day of GR de Pays Tour de Cerdagne in Pyrenees-Orientales, France. We hiked 17kms from the old Roman village Dorres, Santa Maria de Bell-Lloc church, passed by La Tour de Carol-Enveigt and Spanish town Puigcerda and crossed back to Bourg-Madame, France.

The day before we had to spend quite a bit of time wandering around and had to get away from the official trail in order to find a camp spot. It was quite tiring and we got exhausted. In the end we climbed up right into the fields on quite a slope and were able to find a more or less flat spot there. We packed up our tent, had breakfast, did a bit of warm up and were good to go. We started that day quite late at 11am but we still hoped to be able to arrive to our destination earlier than the day before so that we have time to rest. So first to get back to the official trail we had to get through the challenging steep uphill through the thorny bushes and plants following the deer path. Then we had a several kms more of an uphill to make in order to get to the Santa Maria de Bell-Lloc church standing on top of the mountain. This now half ruined church was built back in the 13th century by Romans and it used to be much bigger back then. Its name Bell-Lloc in catalan means “beautiful place”…
