Hi! My name’s Jake from Holiday Extras Travel Guides, and here is our guide to Lanzarote.

Now, before we get cracking here’s some handy info for when you’re planning your trip to the beautiful island of Lanzarote.

Lanzarote is one of the Canary Islands, a part of Spain just off the coast of Africa. Even late in the year, the temperature rarely drops below the twenties, so it’s great for a bit of winter sun.

It’s nearly 3000km away from the UK. Which means from the airport lounge to the César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, you’re looking at about a 4 hour flight time. The airport was renamed in 2019 to celebrate famous artist César Manrique, his creativity left a huge legacy in Lanzarote; you’ll see his name everywhere. But we’ll talk more about that later.

The island is actually quite small, it never takes more than 40 minutes to drive anywhere. For this reason we actually hired a car to get around the island. Public transport and excursion coaches are available if that’s not your thing, but the car’s definitely the most flexible and hassle-free option.

Ok, now you have the bare essentials about the islands, here is the main event. Our TOP nine things to do in Lanzarote...

Up first at number one is arguably the most famous of all - Timanfaya National Park. It’s a huge protected reserve set in a volcanic mountain range, made up entirely of volcanic soil.

Timanfaya is famous for looking like you’re on another planet. Bubbly, cooled lava as far as the eye can see looks completely alien. The best way to see it all is to hop on one of their coaches. It takes you all around the park’s landscape, and is included in your ticket!

The volcanic activity continues beneath your feet. In fact, you’ll be shown that when you visit. Water is poured into deep holes in the ground that go just 13 meters below. Down there, it’s hot enough to make the water boil instantly, resulting in ...very loud steam geysers!

They actually use this volcanic heat to grill the food in the restaurant, El Diablo. Where else can you say you’ve had lunch cooked by a volcano!? If you’d like to know more about El Diablo, check out our Where to Eat in Lanzarote video.

So, as you can see from my beard - it’s pretty windy! So I would recommend bringing at least a light jacket up here, even if you’re coming in the summer seasons cos it’s gonna get chillier!

At number two? We’ve got the beautiful El Golfo.

It’s a small seaside village on the outskirts of Timanfaya national park. The two big reasons people visit El Golfo are found just outside the village.

Looking down from the cliffside pathway, you’ll pass a beautiful black sand beach lined with big volcanic rocks. The rocks act as a breakwater, and the tall white waves crashing against them really is a site to behold.

Keep following the path and you’ll have a clear view of the famous El Lago Verde, or The Green Lake. It’s teeming with volcanic minerals and micro-organisms - that’s what gives it this vivid green colour.

I don’t know if it’s the black sand, or the crashing waves and the clouds but everything's just so dramatic. Especially the giant green volcanic puddle. Crazy!

Number 3 is the stunning Jameos Del Agua. This was the first tourist destination created by Lanzarote’s famous César Manrique who we mentioned earlier. It’s a cross section of art, design and nature. There’s an auditorium, gardens - and even a fantastic restaurant.

A staircase follows the slope of the lava tunnel down to a pool that is the home of the blind lobster, an endemic local species.

Jameos Del Agua’s designer Cesar Manrique wanted to give visitors somewhere to contemplate a natural attraction, formed almost entirely without human intervention. Even gardens in the open-air section of the caves were designed with this in mind.

My top 5 things to do in Lanzarote. Are you looking for an exciting holiday destination? Lanzarote, the fourth largest of the Canary Islands, offers plenty of amazing activities for visitors of all ages. Whether you're interested in exploring the island's stunning natural beauty, relaxing on pristine beaches, or indulging in some thrilling adventure sports, Lanzarote has something for everyone. In this Lanzarote travel guide, we'll take a look at the top things to do in Lanzarote.

What to do in Lanzarote ? First up, no trip to Lanzarote would be complete without exploring Timanfaya National Park. This unique volcanic landscape was formed by a series of eruptions that took place in the 18th and 19th centuries, leaving behind a surreal landscape of lava fields, craters, and twisted rock formations. Take a guided tour through the park and marvel at the geothermal activity that continues to shape the area, including bubbling mud pools and steam vents. This is surely one of the best things to do in Lanzarote.

Next, head to the coast and explore the island's stunning beaches. One of the most popular is Papagayo Beach, a secluded cove with crystal-clear waters and soft golden sand. It's a great spot for swimming, snorkelling, and sunbathing, and there are plenty of restaurants and bars nearby where you can enjoy a delicious meal or refreshing drink. It’s the best beach in Lanzarote for sure.

For a more active day out, why not try your hand at some of the island's adventure sports? You can go surfing, windsurfing, or kiteboarding on the waves, or take a guided hike through the rugged volcanic terrain. The island is also a popular spot for cycling, with plenty of scenic routes that take you through picturesque villages and along the coast. These are the best activities to do in Lanzarote.

If you're travelling with kids, be sure to visit Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park. This family-friendly theme park has a range of attractions, including a water park, a zoo, and a range of animal shows. You can see everything from eagles and snakes to dolphins and sea lions, and there are plenty of interactive exhibits where kids can learn about the natural world.

What to see in Lanzarote ? Another must-see attraction on the island is the Jameos del Agua, a unique volcanic cave system that has been transformed into an incredible underground concert venue. You can explore the stunning subterranean chambers, admire the beautiful crystal clear waters of the lake, and enjoy live music performances in this breathtaking setting.

In summary, Lanzarote is a wonderful holiday destination that has plenty to offer visitors of all ages. There are so many activities to do in Lanzarote that it’s hard to find the best. This Lanzarote travel guide will help you to find the top things to do in Lanzarote. From exploring the island's unique volcanic landscape and stunning beaches to indulging in some thrilling adventure sports and sampling delicious local cuisine, there's something for everyone on this beautiful island. CHCAMPERVANS LANZAROTE
Affordable motor home rental company. Exploring Lanzarote with a motorhome gives you a lot of freedom during your travels.

RUTA DEL LITORAL (TIMANFAYA N.P.)
Ruta del Litoral lies just outside of this area so it is completely free and you will walk right through a lava field. Make sure to wear good shoes on this hike.

CALDERA BLANCA (LOS VOLCANOS N.P.)
Caldera Blanca, or the ‘’white volcano’’ lies in Los Volcanos N.P. Walk along 2 dormant volcanoes. We started early to catch the sunrise from the top.

LAGO VERDE
Also known as the ‘’green lake’’, a beautiful lake that turned green due to the presence of algae. If you park at El Golfo you will find a beautiful lookout overviewing Lago Verde.

LOS CHARCONNES
Great tidal pools far away from any city. The water here will be nice and warm when the sun is out. A ruin nearby makes for excellent urbexing.

TEGUISE (MARKET)
Before Arrecife, Teguise was Lanzarotes official capital. Nowadays you will find some of the oldest buildings here together with a cozy market on Sunday. Be warned: it is a bit touristy here.

COSTA TEGUISE
Costa Teguise is completely different than Teguise, it lies next to the sea. It has some wonderful white sand beaches and the boulevard is also a great place for a run in the sun.

CLUB SANTA ROSA
An amazing and affordable place to stay. It lies about 5 minutes by foot away from the CBD and its beaches. It has a fully equipped gym, a bowling alley, a padel court, and a full-sized in and outdoor swimming pool. But best of all: Great beds and the best showers we had in Lanzarote.

RESTAURANT LA TABLA
A cozy restaurant where you can eat the best Tapas in Lanzarote.

LANZA SURF & YOGA
Famara beach is the best place to learn surfing. Lanzasurf has great instructors and could even make Maury stand on her board haha. After surfing you may choose to do some Yoga or to get a massage.

ECODOME
A boutique hotel, perfect for a romantic night under the stars.

JAMEOS DEL AGUA
A Lavatunnel designed by Cesar Manrique. This is a very special place. Definitely a must-visit.

JARDING DE CACTUS
Botanic gardens specialize in cacti. Jarding de Cactus is also designed by Cesar Manrique.

MIRADOR DEL RIO
Beautiful vistas over La Graciosa from the highest peak in Lanzarote.

Hello! I’m Jake, and in this guide we’re going to show you some of the best places to stay in Lanzarote. So in no particular order - here we go!

The gorgeous Punta Mujeres is a coastal village on the northern east coast of the island, full of small, traditional white buildings.

And when a village is not only by the coast, but also this pretty, and it has major tourist attractions you think that it would feel more touristy. But it really doesn't. like it's got a really small village local kind of authentic feel and I really love that.

Most buildings have pretty terraces and balconies, reaching to make the most of the beautiful views out to sea. Historically a fishing village, the small streets and alleyways all seem to lead you to the sea. Perhaps Punta Mujeres’ biggest draw for tourists though is the natural bathing pools.

Filled with seawater and protected by huge breakwaters of naturally occurring rocks, swim in these pools at the right time of day and you’ll get to experience the sea’s waves smashing against these rocks to make huge plumes and sprays. You won’t find white sand here - the beach at Punta Mujeres has a different beauty.

The beach at Punta Mujeres is beautiful in its own way you know it's not white sand, it's sort of like dark black rocks and white waves smashing up against them. It's a really great place to see but maybe it's not a perfect beach if you’re thinking of having a swim.

Mere minutes away from popular attractions like Jameos Del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes; Punta Mujeres is the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for a mix of nearby things to do and relaxing isolation.

Somewhere definitely not so isolated is Puerto Del Carmen, maybe the best known resort town on the island. At just 10 minutes from the airport, it’s a perfect place to explore the island from.

Really it's got all of the comforts you’d expect from a resort town. It's got restaurants, bars clubs, nice beaches and what we think is really the gem a nice little fishing port as well; it's called El Varadero and you can see lots of little leisure boats moored up there. It’s a really lovely place to go for a nice wander.

Puerto del Carmen stretches for 6 kilometres along the coastline, so be sure to check exactly where you’re planning on staying to get the most out of your location. But make no mistake, wherever you stay, you’re going to have everything you need just a stone’s throw away. And that’s to say nothing of the amazing sunsets.

So the shape of the island means that from Puerto del Carmen to the sea you can also see some of the mountains over there and where the sun sets behind them and get really lovely Orange Glow.

Like many resort towns, Puerto Del Carmen is full of energy - restaurants, bars, nightlife, you name it. But in exchange, you do lose a little of the authenticity you’ll find in smaller towns.

If you’re looking for authenticity, look no further than Teguise, the oldest Spanish settlement in the whole of the Canaries, dating back to 1402. It’s located slightly inland, but still very close to lots of attractions and coastal areas, making it a perfect home base if you’ve hired a car, and want to see as much of the island as possible.

So this main town of Teguise is known as La Villa, it’s just referred to as La Villa. Teguise is the region, or Costa Teguise is the tourism place down by the beach but this is a lot more quaint, and local and it's just got a lot more relaxed feel to it.

There are few hotels, and not many organised tours stop here. This makes for hushed streets and squares that perfectly preserve the past. But don’t mistake the quiet for isolation - this town hosts the island’s biggest street market every Sunday. Also, up on the peak of the extinct volcano overlooking the town, you’ll find the fortress Castillo Santa Barbara, home to the Pirate Museum! If you’re interested, you can learn more about the museum in our Lanzarote Travel Guide.

Just a 15 minute drive towards the sea away from the peaks surrounding Teguise is Lanzarote’s third largest resort - Costa Teguise...

Hello! I’m Jake, and today we’re going to show you the six best places to eat in Lanzarote.

Who’d have guessed that one of the best places to eat in Lanzarote was underground? Jameos del Agua is a kind of museum, gallery, restaurant and landmark all rolled into one, set in a stunning underground anomaly that is uniquely Lanzarote.

The restaurant Jameos Del Agua is set down in these lava tunnels and it’s just so cool like all the decor is all about bringing nature things and everything the menu is fantastic, I’ve got some steak on the way on the way and yeah it's going to probably be the coolest place you’ll eat in Lanzarote

The Jameos Del Agua are a collection of caves created by lava, and renovated by a famous artist and architect Cesar Manrique. When you first descend into the caves, you’ll enter the Jameos Del Agua restaurant. A delicious menu full of traditional Spanish and Canarian cuisine, as well as many crowd pleasing dishes like burgers and soups too, you’ll find something for everyone.

The view from Mirador del Rio is stunning, but there’s definitely a different joy to be found in a warm, local restaurants like El Sibarita, in Caleta De Famara. This town is a water sport paradise, and the wind that’s scooped in by this beautiful cove attracts surfers, windsurfers and kite surfers alike.

El Sibarita is proudly a small business that sources delicious local ingredients for their home-cooked food. They specialise in vegan, vegetarian and asian dishes, but don’t worry carnivores - chicken and/or prawns can be added to any dish, and it’s just as delicious. Although their menu top-lines as vegan and vegetarian, you won’t be stuck with a salad. Big, mouth-watering rice bowls and delicious veggie burgers await.

and to be honest, what better way is there to recharge after a long day of surfing and sunbathing with a big healthy hearty meal.

ok, so this was a bit of a cop-out. You’re not gonna come here for the food - don’t get me wrong there’s nice baguettes and nice pastries, you know. You can come here for a good lunch. But the real reason you want to eat here is to look out at all this.

What a view. Mirador del Rio is a lookout point set on the northernmost point of the island, and it’s 400m high. Two enormous glass windows, called ‘the eyes’ of the Mirador, give you incredible views out to see, and the nearby island of La Graciosa, home to only around 700 people. The balcony and the eyes alone are amazing, but if you’ve got the time, and the courage, make sure you also venture up to the lookout point on the top of the building. The view is spectacular.

Lanzarote has a couple of truly unique places to eat, but you cannot miss out on El Diablo in Timanfaya National Park. A uniquely shaped building on a peak in the middle of the Fire Mountains, El Diablo has panoramic floor to ceiling windows, giving you 360 degree views of the landscape around you. The park is famous for looking eerily like you’re on another planet.

For some, that’s good enough to draw them to El Diablo. But for me, the real kicker was that this restaurant cooks using volcanic heat from below the ground! As the theatrical displays for tourists outside will show you, there is intense volcanic heat just below ground level. Using a huge grilling shelf placed atop a deep shaft into the ground below, they channel that volcanic heat to flame grill the food for the restaurant.

and let me tell you don't fill up on mains because they do this really delicious dessert that's like called what's it called volcano volcano on brownies soil ouu it’s delicious like a lovely and creamy and make sure you get that as well all about what the volcano.

In the big and bustling resort town of Puerto del Carmen, you’ll find all manner of lively Irish bars and crowd-pleasing restaurants - and a walk around the dock, El Varadero, is a perfect way to spend the evening. But here, we’re going back to the smaller, rustic, genuine places.
