PORTO, PORTUGAL | 10 Incredible Things To Do In & Around Porto

Porto is located in northwest Portugal along the Douro River and a must-visit travel destination. From its stunning old town to its authentic cuisine and romantic viewpoints, Porto has so much to offer. These are the best things to do in and around Porto:

10. Visit at least one of the many churches
The most beautiful ones include: Igreja dos Clérigos, São Francisco Church, Igreja do Carmo, and the Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto)

9. Admire the architecture at the Livraria Lello
The building dates back to 1906 and is often nicknamed the “most beautiful bookshop in the world” due to its blend of different architectural designs.

☑️ Book your skip the line ticket in advance:

8. Try the local food
Worth trying: tripas, bacalhau à brás, sardinhas, and francesinha

7. Walk the riverfront (Cais da Ribeira)
This is one of the liveliest parts of Porto, and a great place to walk, dine, and sightsee.

6. Go on a cruise of the 6 bridges
From the water, you can admire the beautiful landscapes and red-roofed buildings of Porto as well as Vila Nova de Gaia. All while learning about the historic bridges that connect both cities. Boat tours leave from the riverfront in Porto (Ribeira Quay) and last about 50 minutes.

☑️ Book your 6 bridges cruise:

5. Take in a view of the city
Best viewpoints: Miradouro da Vitória, the street next to the Porto cathedral, Passeio das Virtudes, Miradouro da Ribeira (for sunset), and from the waterfront of Vila Nova de Gaia.

4. Day trip to Peneda-Gerês National Park
Located near the Spanish border, the Peneda-Gerês national park is a 2 hour drive from Porto. It’s the oldest protected area and the only national park in Portugal, covering about 695 square kilometers.

☑️ Book a 4x4 day tour:

3. Day trip to the Douro wine valley
The Douro wine valley is where the famous port wine is produced and it’s known as the first demarcated wine region in the world. But besides its wines, this valley is also worth visiting for its incredible landscapes, nature, and history. We spent two days in Peso da Régua and enjoyed wine tasting, hiking, and learning all about the region.

☑️ Day cruise to the Douro wine valley:

2. Visit the wine cellars at Vila Nova de Gaia
While less idyllic, Vila Nova de Gaia is also known for its port wine. In fact, all the port wine produced in the upper Douro Valley would historically be transported here in barrels on traditional boats (rabelo boats). This is why the riverbanks of Porto today are filled with wine cellars and tasting rooms. Most wine cellars offer wine tastings and guided tours.

1. Free walking tour of the city
During a 2.5 hours guided tour, you’ll see the main highlights of the city, like São Bento train station, Café Majestic, Aliados avenue, and much more. But you’ll also get some recommendations to eat, go out, and have fun. This tour leaves a few times per day from the Liberty Square.

☑️ Free walking tour (the one we did!):

MORE INFO ABOUT THE VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Spain is a complex country! It’s also a pretty easy going one. But there are certain things that you just don’t want to get wrong. And here they are!

11. Don’t go OTT on please and thank you.
In Spanish we just don’t use the words as much. We are more likely to work ‘please’ and ’thank you’ into the tone of how we speak, or by tweaking the words (such as adding “ito” to the end of a word).

10. Don’t put bread on your plate.
In Spain, you always leave your bread beside your plate on the table. It sites beside your cutlery, because it kind of is a piece of cutlery.

9. Don’t eat with your hand under the table.
I grew up with no elbows on the table. But here in Spain we also have the rule that you should have your hands above the table at all times. Because you might have a knife??

8. Don’t offer guests a beer at 5pm
Because we eat lunch and dinner later, beer o’clock is usually about 8pm… not 5pm.

7. Don’t help with the dishes after parties.
It’s just not something that’s done here. At the end of a party or dinner party, you might help tidy up slightly, but you don’t help do the dishes.

6. Don’t be a ‘pesado’ in social situations.
Chill out! Don’t ask people what their job is straight away when you meet them in a social setting and don’t expect people to cut to the chase when telling a story - we take our time here!

5. Don’t misinterpret loud conversations.
When Yoly speaks with her mother on the phone, it can get heated. But they’re not arguing - it’s just that conversations here often sound more intense.

4. Don’t generalise about Spain.
This is a highly regional country. So don’t assume that every region of Spain has the same language, customs or food.

3. Don’t call Catalan a dialect of Spanish.
Catalan is its own language - and don’t get that wrong (especially when speaking to a Catalan)

2. Don’t used ‘usted’ willy nilly.
Here in Spain we’re pretty informal and so don’t use “usted” unless we’re speaking with older people or in very formal situations.

1. Don’t mention the civil war casually.
The Spanish civil war and the dictatorship is a really complex topic, and still an open wound in Spain. So wait until you know someone pretty well before diving into the topic.

Fuerteventura tour in 10 minutes - What is Fuerteventura like?

Fuerteventura tour in 10 minutes - What is Fuerteventura like?

If you are thinking of having a holiday in Fuerteventura Canary Islands and are wondering what Fuerteventura is like this may help. Well hopefully this video will help you decide where to stay in Fuerteventura and once you are here, what to see in Fuerteventura Spain. As you will see, Fuerteventura beaches are the best beaches in the Canary Islands, even the best beaches in Europe.

We start the tour in the north of Fuerteventura and move south.

1. Corralejo Dunes - from the air and from my favourite road in Fuerteventura. Then the dunes beaches themselves.

2. Corralejo town - from the air and then the town beaches and the high street. What is Corralejo like -

3. Isla de Lobos - this is a small island off of Corralejo which you can travel to on a small ferry, a glass-bottomed boat or on a Catamaran trip. Full catamaran trip -

4. El Cotillo - my personal favourite place in Fuerteventura. El Cotillo lighthouse starts it off and then after flying over the beaches we visit them and then see some of the rest of El Cotillo. What is El Cotillo like - also check out my website for all information about El Cotillo.

5. Betancuria - after visiting the viewing point at Mirador Morro Velosa we then head into Betancuria which was the original capital of Fuerteventura. It is a very pretty little town. A tour of Betancuria -

6. Caleta de Fuste - after a quick flyover you will see some of the beaches, hotels and other parts of Caleta. Caleta is very popular with British tourists. What is Caleta like -

7. Ajuy Caves - Ajuy is on the rugged west coast and is worth a visit and a walk along the cliffs to the sea caves. Caves video -

8. Costa Calma, Jandia and Morro Jable - The Jandia peninsular has many glorious beaches all along its length from Costa Calma, past Sotavento beach to Morro Jable. A walk around Morro Jable -

9. Cofete - This is probably the least visited part of Fuerteventura even though it has a very long beautiful beach. The bumpy track to get to it is probably the reason. There is a small cafe in the village and that is it - apart from Villa Winter which has a rumoured past involving senior nazis at the end of WW2. The scary road to Cofete -

Hopefully you enjoy this Fuerteventura guide and now have a better idea of the things to do in Fuerteventura and some of the Fuerteventura attractions. You may also have a better idea of where to stay in Fuerteventura.

Remember it is Fuerteventura, not Feurteventura or Fuertaventura, and it is pronounced roughly as Fwertaventura
