10 Best place to visit in Prieska South Africa

S1 – Ep 270 – Prieska – A Beautiful Town on the Southern Bank of the Orange River!

As has been happening more frequently nowadays, we ended up travelling into the night again on our way to Prieska. but to be honest we enjoyed the beautiful sunset and the landscape which has amazing light at that time of the day. Crossing over the Orange River as the sun had set was absolutely awe-inspiring! It was good to see the workers cleaning the streets at night as we drove through this town on the southern bank of the Orange River. It really is a very clean town. We arrived at the farm where we were spending the evening but were so tired after the long day that we had supper and hit the sack immediately. The next morning we were up early and started exploring Prieska. What a gorgeous town, there was so much to see and enjoy. The old locomotive at the station, the fort on the hill, the view of the Orange River and the golf course and so much more. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #prieska

S1 – Ep 271 – Marydale and Draghoender – What an Incredible Visit to these Two Places!

Leaving Prieska and heading to Marydale we had no idea what was waiting for us. Driving through the tiny town was fantastic. So sad that the school burnt down and to see the abandoned Catholic Temple was shocking. It must have been a beautiful place where people used to worship. Then we took a short drive to the Draghoender Station and this visit touched my heart. To see the stunning station building and the incredible old hotel building falling apart the way they were was very sad to see. I can just imagine what it looked like back in the day. What an incredible visit this was to these two places! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #marydale #draghoender #prieska

S1 – Ep 274 – Upington – On the Banks of the Mighty Orange River!

When we arrived in Upington we had to cross the mighty Orange River once again on this trip. We headed to the Kalahari Mall to get pasta for dinner and we went directly to our accommodation where we spent the evening. This place was like paradise with beautiful gardens and water features. The next morning we went straight to the Police Station where we wanted to see the camel statue with the policeman on its back. There is a great story behind this which we explain in the video. Then we spent some time at Sakkie se Arkie campsite which is on the banks of the river. It was then time to go to the museum and the donkey sculpture which was another fascinating visit. We will definitely have to come and see Upington again. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #upington #orangeriver

S1 – Ep 260 – Philipstown – A Small Eastern Karoo Town!

We took a beautiful gravel road when we left De Aar and headed to Philipstown. On the way, we happened upon the Houtkraal siding and it provided us with a glimpse into the past when the railway system was still operational. This small Eastern Karoo town in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa was a great place to visit. As we drove into the town the first building we saw was the old abandoned jail. Some of the old barbed wire to stop the inmates from escaping still remains and was fascinating to see! This was an exciting start to us exploring the town. Driving down the main road we could see some pretty old houses and other buildings, including two gorgeous churches. We were very lucky to find a place in town which made us amazing artisan bread toasted sandwiches. Those really hit the spot. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #philipstown

Putsonderwater Abandoned Railway Ghost Town South Africa

An abandoned railway village called Putsonderwater on the railway line between De Aar and Upington, in the dry Northern Cape province of South Africa. It's not that hard to reach, along a reasonably good gravel road between Marydale and Kenhardt. It's well worth the detour, and such a special experience exploring these fast disappearing villages, that were once thriving communities, now reverting back to nature.

There are a couple of versions of how the name Putsonderwater, which means well without water in the Afrikaans language came about. The one I like, is a man by the name of Dawid Ockhuis dug a well back in the late 1800's, and struck liquid gold in an arid land, when his well proved to have a good supply of water.

In those days, the trek boers would come past and ask for water. Not being a man who liked to share his supply, he would reply die put is sonder water, meaning the well is without water. There are other stories, but this one is the best for me.

S1 – Ep 263 – Douglas – A Town at the Confluence of the Orange and Vaal Rivers!

It was once again one of those days where we only arrived at our overnight accommodation in Douglas late that evening because we got caught up at all our other stops throughout the day. The next morning we got an early start so we could see as much of Douglas as we could. It was raining on-and-off all morning, but that didn't slow us down one bit! We were very impressed with this town and found it very neat and organised. The highlight was our visit to the confluence of the Orange and Vaal Rivers. What a spectacle! This was amazing to see and a must-visit if you have not been there before. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #douglas #hopetown

S1 – Ep 266 – Kuruman – With a Geological Feature Bringing Water from Underground!

Arriving in Kuruman we were surprised to see how busy the town was and how big! It has expanded so much due to the mining activity in the area. We were told about a geological feature which brings water from deep underground which we had to go see. We also visited the Moffat Mission Station just on the outskirts of the town. Unfortunately we were there just after closing time so couldn’t see much but we did see a part of it. We then took a drive through the town and headed to our accommodation whereafter we went out for our evening meal. All-in-all it was a good stay in Kuruman. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #kuruman

S1 – Ep 219 – Vanderkloof - The Highest Dam Wall in South Africa!

When we left Orania we decided to go and see the highest dam wall in South Africa at the Vanderkloof Dam. We were not expecting to see this magnificent structure. We took a slow drive through the small town of Vanderkloof and also visited the Holiday Resort at the dam. Unfortunately it looked as if the resort was not functional anymore although there were a few people enjoying the place. We then left the resort and town and headed for the dam wall. What a privilege it was to drive over this magnificent piece of engineering! On our way to our next destination we crossed an absolutely stunning single-lane bridge which crossed the Orange River just below the Vanderkloof Dam. The natural beauty in this area is simply breathtaking! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #vanderkloofdam #northerncape #damwall #bridge #orangeriver

S1 – Ep 175 – De Rust – A Picturesque Klein Karoo Village South of Meiringspoort!

Having just gone through the stunningly beautiful Meringspoort, we had the privilege of staying over at Meijer’s Rust. What an awesome place just outside De Rust! The next morning after joining the farmer for a short while to move his cattle to another grazing field, we left the farm and headed for the picturesque Klein Karoo village of De Rust. Yet another small town which is doing so well for itself. The old Victorian style houses are all so neat, the gardens are wonderful and the people are very warm and friendly. Driving through De Rust we could see how it was nestled between the majestic Swartberg and Kammanassie mountains on the scenic Route 62. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #derust #karoo #meiringspoort #village

Orange River and Vaal River Confluence by Drone

South Africa's two greatest rivers, the Vaal and the Orange converge just outside the small town of Douglas in the Northern Cape. Here's some drone footage from a visit I paid a visit there earlier this year. Both rivers were very full, notice the difference in colour and also how much slower the Vaal's flow is than the Orange.

From here, South Africa's longest river still has another 900 km before it reaches the Atlantic ocean at Alexander Bay, on the border with Namibia.

DOUGLAS NA PRIESKA

Description

S1 – Ep 273 – Groblershoop – This Village is the Gateway to the Green Kalahari!

Our next stop was Groblershoop which is a small village situated about 2km west of the Orange River on the N10 and known as the gateway to the Green Kalahari. We’ve never heard of Groblershoop before and we were very surprised to learn that that the Orange River Wine Cellars is the largest co-operative cellars in Africa and the second largest in the world. It was very interesting to see how the irrigation canals worked and supplied the farmers with water. We enjoyed our visit to Groblershoop. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #groblershoop #putsonderwater

S1 – Ep 275 – Keimoes – So much Green Vegetation and Blue Skies!

The first thing we saw as we entered Keimoes was green vegetation and springboks grazing on the grass. The green was complemented by the bright blue skies and the warm weather we experienced. The town was very busy on this day but we were told it was the end of the picking season so all the contract workers were paid and were doing their shopping before making their way home. Driving through Keimoes was awesome. We decided to drive up Tierberg and the view of the surrounding farmland from up there was spectacular. We almost had to spend the night in the church grounds because the automated gate was open when we entered, but closed when we wanted to leave. Fortunately the minister opened for us. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Keimoes. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #keimoes

S1 – Ep 261 – Petrusville – A Small Village South of the Orange River!

We were warned about the road between Philipstown and Petrusville and were expecting many potholes. To our dismay, we found those reports to be true. This was the worst road we have been on since we started our travels in South Africa. Arriving in Petrusville, which is about 10km south of the Orange River we took a slow drive through the streets of this small village. We also saw the pillar fountain dedicated to King Edward VII, across from the town library. We also happened upon an old wooden bell tower next to the library, completely intact with bell and all! The Dutch Reformed church was very beautiful and the grounds very well-maintained. We do believe this town was a stunning place back in the day. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #petrusville #karoo
