Explore California's 2 best islands: Catalina & Balboa

#catalina #balboa #losangeles #islands
Step on a ferry and take a ride to two great Los Angeles area islands, idyllic Catalina and Balboa. Did we mention they're incredibly photogenic as well?
Catalina is famously just 26 miles from the L.A. coastline, while Balboa is a manmade island off the coast of Newport Beach and another world from the hustle bustle of Orange County.

On Catalina's Avalon, you'll discover the best photo spots on the island, including the historic Casino, former William Wrigley mansion Inn at Mt. Ada, and where to get the best sunset and sunrise shots on the island. Along the way, Jeff also takes a trip to the back country of the island, to Two Harbors and Airport in the Sky and meets some fascinating local characters.
On Balboa, Jeff sets set out to find the best places to photograph, and Jeff shows off his famous Magazine Selfie trick with Chris Raney and wife Tanya. @YellowProductions
Along the way--lots of Balboa Bars, frozen bananas, treks through the cute downtown district, and shots of boaters, swimmers, stand-up paddlers and other iconic Balboa Island images.

Both episodes have been seen before, but have been re-edited as a duo, with new footage and all new music from Jez Graham, Paul Ellis, Dean Robaina and D5 Media Group and Peter Spirer.

The #Photowalks series is all about bringing viewers to iconic places in search of the best photo spots and how to get them.

The Castro District, commonly referred to as the Castro, is a neighborhood in Eureka Valley in San Francisco. The Castro was one of the first gay neighborhoods in the United States. Having transformed from a working-class neighborhood through the 1960s and , the Castro remains one of the most prominent symbols of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activism and events in the world.
San Francisco's gay village is mostly concentrated in the business district that is located on Castro Street from Market Street to 19th Street. It extends down Market Street toward Church Street and on both sides of the Castro neighborhood from Church Street to Eureka Street. Although the greater gay community was, and is, concentrated in the Castro, many gay people live in the surrounding residential areas bordered by Corona Heights, the Mission District, Noe Valley, Twin Peaks, and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods. Some consider it to include Duboce Triangle and Dolores Heights, which both have a strong LGBT presence.

Castro Street, which originates a few blocks north at the intersection of Divisadero and Waller Streets, runs south through Noe Valley, crossing the 24th Street business district and ending as a continuous street a few blocks farther south as it moves toward the Glen Park neighborhood. It reappears in several discontinuous sections before ultimately terminating at Chenery Street, in the heart of Glen Park.

DON'T BUY A FOLDING eBike UNTIL YOU WATCH THIS | RV Life

Our folding E-Bikes do not fit our RV lifestyle. I give 3 reasons why you too may have buyers regret if you purchase FOR RVING.

Note: We spoke with Lectric eBike (another popular folding bike company) and they would not give us a shipment date if we ordered their bikes. Therefore, we did not buy that brand because we move from state to state often. These Aventon Sinch folding bikes were more and for sale at the local bike shop. That is why we purchased them.

Winter Snow In Portola California | Best Snow of North Lake Tahoe 2020 - 2021 | Happy New Year

Subscribe: AnGkhmerUS:
Where is the best place to enjoy snow for New Year 2021? To celebrate New Year this 2021, we drove about 4 hours from San Fransisco to Portola one of the best snow pace in North of Lake Tahoe. Portola is located in North of Lake Tahoe, California. In this video you will see the amazing views of snow covered the ground, trees and the mountains. We drove the Smith Peak, but the snow was so deep we didn't be able to make it all the way to the top. However, we got to drive through snow and get a good drove shot of snow and trees. Also we drove up to another peak called, Beckwuorth Peak to get the views of sunset. Again we didn't make it to the top, we made to half way, which is good enough for the good views.

You also can see the highlights for my next video at the end, don't forget to watch all the way end.

Beautiful Views From The Santa Cruz Mountains (10-8-2022)

Stunning scenery seen late this afternoon up high in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Just breathtaking indeed! Me & my cousin had another adventure this day! For this day's outing, we went to Portola Redwoods State Park... Our day in summary: We hiked a bit, enjoying the majestic old redwoods there along with the scenic forests. Later, we stopped around the Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve to take in the beautiful mountainous scenery from up high as well as the epic sunset. We were so high that we were above the clouds! We later ended our day by eating dinner at Pho Wagon along Meridian Ave back in San Jose. 'Til next time! (Outing taken place Saturday, ‎October ‎8, ‎2022)

*A bit about Portola Redwoods State Park: Portola Redwoods SP is in a remote mountain forest that can be difficult to reach. The windy Portola State Park Road is the only road in and out of the park. The drive to Portola SP can be nerve-wracking as you’ll need to drive along twisty narrow mountain roads with steep drop-offs (Alpine Rd & then take Portola State Park Rd). The park is a 2,800-acre park in California situated in San Mateo County. The road leading to the park drops from a ridgetop into a deeply shaded redwood forest, offering a hushed getaway from the suburban bustle of nearby Silicon Valley and the South Bay. The visitor center feels like a wilderness lodge. 18 miles of trails follow meandering creeks, where moisture-loving coast redwoods stand tall among ferns & huckleberries. Waterfalls on Fall and Pescadero creeks tumble down mossy banks over rocks & woody debris. The park has a 55-site family campground, 4 group campsites & a trail camp for backpackers. It also protects some of the most remote & scenic redwoods in the region, the Peter’s Creek Grove. Certainly, this park is a hidden gem!

Background:

Daly City is the most populous city in San Mateo County, California, United States, with an estimated 2019 population of 106,280. Located in the San Francisco Bay Area, and immediately south of San Francisco, it is named for businessman and landowner John Donald Daly.

The City is a coastal community located at the northernmost edge of San Mateo County. Sharing a common border with the City/County of San Francisco, Daly City is known as the Gateway to the Peninsula. The City's area extends from the Pacific Ocean on the west and nearly to San Francisco Bay on the east. Daly City abuts on San Bruno Mountain, a State and County Park which features the highest peak in the area's hilly terrain.

Much of Daly City occupies what were original Spanish land grants, largely unoccupied in the years that followed the sighting of San Francisco Bay by members of an exploratory party led by Gaspar de Portola in 1769. A military post, the Presidio, was established near the entrance to the bay, and with a mission founded near a small lake in the center of what became San Francisco, European settlers inhabited this north peninsula.

The few Indians who foraged and hunted around San Bruno Mountain soon disappeared and their lands were used for cattle grazing. The road leading north from other settlements was dubbed Mission Road, and its general location has changed little from Spanish days. Mission Road forked at what is now known as top-of-the-hill in Daly City, one route headed to the mission, the other to the Presidio. Much of the foodstuffs that supplied those outposts were grown in a fertile valley near the coast in today's city of Pacifica, a score of miles southwest.

While other locations down the San Francisco Peninsula were being settled, very little was happening to the area just over the county line from San Francisco. The soil wasn't too receptive to crop plantings, and it wasn't until the California Gold Rush that any interest was paid to the open spaces west of San Bruno Mountain.

[4K] WEST PORTAL, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, USA (April 27, 2024)

Walking tour of West Portal, San Francisco, California, USA

West Portal is a small neighborhood in San Francisco, California. West Portal is a primarily residential area of the city. The neighborhood's main corridor, West Portal Ave., serves as a principal shopping district of southwestern San Francisco.

West Portal is located at the southern edge of the hills in central SF. The neighborhood is named for the western terminus of the Muni tunnel beneath Twin Peaks that opened in 1918. The ride in the subway from West Portal Station to Castro Station is about seven minutes. By the West Portal Station, the L Taraval goes west along Ulloa Street, and the K Ingleside and the M Ocean View go south along West Portal Avenue. The neighborhood is served by the 48 and 57 Muni bus lines.

Because of its small size and collection of mom and pop stores, restaurants, and saloons, the neighborhood is often described as having a village-like atmosphere. The neighborhood is served by the West Portal Branch of the SF Public Library. Like Glen Park, West Portal is a San Francisco community that almost functions as a small city itself. Though small, the neighborhood has many banks, restaurants of many types, coffee shops, salons, post office (temporary closed), elementary school, drug store, bakery, ice cream shop, real estate agents, and spas. West Portal Avenue is dotted with locally owned and operated businesses which include a record store, book store, toy and craft store, clothing boutiques, produce market, candy shop, and hardware store. West Portal Avenue also has many professional services such as dentists, lawyers, accountants, optometrists, and urgent care facilities.
The frequent fog helps keep the area green in the usually rainless summer months, and on a clear day, West Portal Park, above the Twin Peaks Tunnel, provides a view of the Marin Headlands and the Farallon Islands in the Pacific. - Wikipedia

In Spanish times, West Portal was part of the land holdings of Mission de Dolores. After the break up of the Missions, Jose de Jesus Noe was granted a 4,443 acre ranch in 1846, called Rancho San Miguel. The ranch ran from present day UCSF in Parnassus Heights to San Jose Avenue, south to Daly City and north to Juniper Serra Boulevard and Forest Hill, including the area of present day West Portal. Parts of the ranch east of Twin Peals were subdivided in the late 1800s and became Noe Valley, Eureka Valley, Fairmont Heights, and Sunnyside.
But West Portal remained a ranch until well after the 20th Century. Adolph Sutro bought the remnant of the original rancho in 1880 -- a 1,200-acre parcel that ran from present day UCSF, south along Stanyan Street, up over Twin Peaks due south roughly along present-day Ridgewood Avenue, continuing south to the Ocean View district, then north along Junipero Serra Boulevard to the Laguna Honda reservoir.
While most of the ranch was hilly, the area that later became West Portal was relatively flat, and Sutro rented it to Italian vegetable farmers. For the next 35 years, the rest of Rancho San Miguel remained a nature preserve. Sutro's passion for tree planting eventually covered the slopes of Mt. Sutro and Mt. Davidson as far south as Ocean Avenue with eucalyptus.
When the rancho was put up for sale in 1909 after a contentious battle over Sutro's will, the City was desperate to recover from the 1906 earthquake and fire. City boosters badly wanted to compete with new subdivisions being built on the Peninsula and in the East Bay. The Burnham plan of 1905 and the City Beautiful Movement called for respecting the contours of the land and incorporating landscaping into residential developments. It was no longer acceptable to pack houses tightly together on rectangular street grids that ignored the terrain.
The first neighborhoods to be developed, St Francis Wood and Forest Hill in 1912, were faithful to these new ideas and were carefully designed and built as residential parks. Both developments prohibited commercial activities and were made up exclusively of large homes from the Craftsman movement, the Chicago school, the prairie style of Frank Lloyd right, the Beaux-Arts, and other styles. In contrast, West Portal became a commercial and transportation hub with homes in a wide variety of architectural styles.
The area was originally called West Portal Park in a vain attempt to capitalize on the residential park mystique. The name didn't stick partly because of its proximity to the tunnel entrance. Three streetcars lines (Parkside L line, Ingleside K Line, and Oceanview M Line) ran through the area along a new street, West Portal Avenue, which paralleled Portola Way. Stores and other commercial activities were attracted to this new transit thoroughfare.
West Portal reflects Fernando Nelson and Sons interpretations of contemporary designs. Their first homes, along Portola Drive, mimic the large Arts and Crafts or Spanish style homes across the street in St. Francis Wood.
