Blog:

¡Hola, viajero!

Corpus Christi Fiesta 2012, Ponteareas, Pontevedra, Galicia, Spain

On a wet Sunday 10 June 2012 the town of Ponteareas came to life with their Corpus Christi Fiesta. It is held on the Sunday after Corpus Christi .

Ponteareas is in the province of Pontevedra, Galicia, Spain

This celebration dates back to 1857 when flowers would be thrown ahead of the procession of the Holy Sacrament.

It is the most important celebration on the calendar of this town. The festivities are notable for the spectacular floral carpets that are prepared for the solemn Sunday procession.

On the night before, all the locals help to make the delicate multi-coloured tapestries that cover the streets on the route of the religious procession the following day. The results are stunning floral filigrees that highlight the splendour of the Corpus Christi procession.

In 1968 it was declared an Interés Turistico, in 1980 was declared an Interés Turístico Nacional, and in 2009 was declared an Interés Turístico Internacional joining other famous Spanish celebrations such as Fallas and the Tomatina.

Oia really is a special place. It is famous for its Monastery, Santa Maria de Oia which almost rises ot of the sea, its amazing sunsets, the mountains, dense forests including the most northenly cork forest in Europe and the magical petroglyphs. It´s well located on the scenic coastal road between Baiona and the border town of La Guardia. The Old Town is worth visiting as although it is small is full of surprises like Casa Puertas, the Casa Rural and the restaurant Casa de Henriqueta. As well as fishing people come to dive and cycling and walking are popular acivities.

???? Day 6 Thoughts:
We finally crossed into Spain today! Takes some time to mentally switch from ‘bom caminho’ to ‘buen camino’ and ‘obrigado’ to ‘gracias.’ The Valença fortress is the highlight of the day—take some time to explore the fortress, have an ice cream, and relax before crossing into Spain. The border crossing into Tui, Spain is easy—there are no checks. Immediately, I recognize the change of architecture as we venture into Spain—Spanish towns have a charm of their own.

Bom caminho/buen camino,
David ????
