Today we visit Ponferrada, a small city in the Bierzo region in the north of Spain that offers great quality of life and fantastic food and wine. One of Spain's little-known gems and well worth a visit if you are in that part of the world.

Knights Templar castle of Ponferrada

We are continuing on our way to Santiago de Compostela and we have stopped to visit the Knights Templar Castle of Ponferrada.
The Knights Templers protected the pilgrims from this area for almost 200 years. This castle is magical, it still has the Templers energy.

Top 10 Camino de Santiago starting points

What are are the most popular Camino de Santiago starting points? Where do most pilgrims start their journey?

According to statistics released by the Pilgrims Office in Santiago de Compostela for 2012, these are the Top 10 Camino starting points (top 5 are in the French Way). These figures only reflect those walking to Santiago AND registered by the Pilgrims Office (meaning they received their Compostela or certificate). These statistics don't take into account the number of pilgrims walking sections of the Camino but not finishing in Santiago or those walking to Santiago but not applying for the Compostela. However, the figures give us a good indication of the most popular spots to begin your Camino journey:

1- Sarria

40,734 (21,16% of the total) pilgrims started the Camino de Santiago in Sarria in 2012. Sarria is just over 100km away from Santiago so it is the minimum distance required to receive the Compostela.

2- Saint Jean Pied de Port
22,214 (11,54%) started over the French border, in Saint Jean Pied de Port, at the foot of the Pyrenees and starting point of the French Way / Camino Francés.

3-León
10,406 (5,41%) chose the city of León, approximately 300km away. The Montes de León are one of the highlights along this section.

4- O Cebreiro
10,315 (5,36%) started in the mountain village of O Cebreiro, Galicia.

5-Roncesvalles
8,468 (4,40%) skipped the most challenging day walking across the Pyrenees and started in the village of Roncesvalles (790kms from Santiago), still in the Pyrenees.

6-Tui (Portuguese Way)
8,436 (4,38%) began their Camino de Santiago in the border town of Tui, separated from Portugal only by the River Miño. Tui is 100km from Santiago, on the Portuguese Way.

7-Ponferrada
7,765 (4,03%) started in Ponferrada, capital of El Bierzo region, roughly 200km away from Santiago. From Ponferrada to Galicia, you'll get some stunning (but challenging) mountain walking and you will pass the famous 'cruz de ferro' (iron cross).

8-Porto (Portuguese Way)
Picturesque Porto, UNESCO world heritage city, and home of Port wine is another very popular starting point for the Portuguese Way. 7,641 (3,97%) pilgrims chose it as their departing point in 2012.

9-Astorga
Astorga, 30km outside León, marked the beginning of the Camino journey for 5,666 (2,94%) people. From there, the French Way heads up to the stunning Montes de León, El Bierzo and then Galicia.

10-Pamplona
Pamplona, in Navarra, famous for its run bull, was the starting point for 4,172 (2,17%) pilgrims.

10. Ponferrada to Monte do Gozo. Avoiding the crowds. Camino De Santiago Frances Route

I walk along drying my laundry - the comfortable men's underwear I wear to stop chaffing beneath my fabulous Macabi hiking skirt!

Passed through bustling Sarria - where many pilgrims start their journey - & stay at Albergue Barbadelo to get a head-start and avoid crowds

Day 34
Despite the presence of more groups on the Way, including exuberant school groups, we are mostly walking in peace and quiet. Avoid staying in popular Portomarin & instead have a very fun night at albergue Casa Garcia in Gonzar.

Day 35.
We pass 700km.

Galicia is gorgeous. Visited an archaeological site, Castromaior, bypassed by so many pilgrims, a 'Castro' inhabited from the 4th century BCE till the 1st centry AD. We see sewerage systems, fire hearths, and incredible straight walls. It's awe-inspiring and we had the whole place to ourselves.

Rained fairly steadily for a while, which seems to help us gather pace. Not cold or windy, just somehow provokes a more inward approach to walking which makes kilometres fly by.

We made a choice to walk further than is comfortable; for the sake of a promise made to a guy we'll most likely never met again. (animated shadow person walking with us back on day 23). He was Galician, and insisted we must go to Melide to try Pulpo ????. So we walked about 34 km to do just that. Once again, walking more than 30 wiped us out. When will we learn? Pulpo was a treat though...

Day 36.
Slightly exhausted from previous day's effort, we still somehow manage to stay clear of the reported crowds on the Camino. Maybe it's our dirty pilgrim stink!

It's a leisurely kind of day with some delicious local cheese, some silliness and, most surprisingly, loads of eucalyptus trees. Smells like home. Drawing closer to Santiago now...

Had a fine overnight rest with a great host who gave us free beer, lollies, jokes and ice for the aches. Casa Tia Teresa, Salceda

Day 37.
Had thought today felt a bit 'ordinary' until we looked through the footage. Gazpacho picnic on an old bridge, prancy pony street signs, odd popping bushes ... Maybe we're getting lazily blasé about being here - remind ourselves to be mindful and grateful.

Having pre-dinner drinks - love that coffee often comes with a bickie or cake, or beer comes with a savoury snack. Meanwhile, in Australia we have to pay for tomato sauce on the pie. Poor form, I reckon.

Stay only 5km from Santiago de Compestela - honestly the worst albergue of our Camino.

Opening song by unknown, very cool busker near Cruceiro Santo Toribio on the descent into Astorga (to feature in a later episode). If you see him, pay him well (we did) and if you have a spare souvenir from your country, he'd love it. We were so sorry not to have a Kiwi one for him.

Camino De Santiago - Ponferrada to Las Herreías

Hi and thanks for clicking on my video. Please consider liking the video and Subscribing to my channel!

This video is the section of the Camino from Ponferrada to Las Herreías, over two days. Firstly, Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo and then Las Herrerías I had been having some foot issues so had to have a shorter, second day to Las Herrerías, but I'm glad i did as it was on the best villages I stayed in. It meant for a longer walk the next day, as you will see in the next video.
