Currency

Britain’s currency is the pound sterling (£), which is divided into 100 pence (p).

Scotland has its own pound sterling notes. These represent the same value as an English note and can be used elsewhere in Britain. The Scottish £1 note is not accepted outside Scotland.

There are lots of bureaux de change in Britain – often located inside:

• banks
• travel agents
• Post Offices
• airports
• major train stations.

It's worth shopping around to get the best deal and remember to ask how much commission is charged.

Passport And Visas Requirements To Enter The UK

Please note: Following the recent referendum vote for the UK to leave the European Union (EU), there are currently no changes in the way people travel to Britain. The following guidelines still apply:

If you're planning an adventure to the UK, depending on your nationality and your reason for visiting, you may need to organise a visa.

If you're an American, Canadian or Australian tourist, you'll be able to travel visa-free throughout the UK, providing you have a valid passport and your reason for visiting meets the immigration rules (link is external).

Citizens from some South American and Caribbean countries as well as Japan are also able to travel visa-free around the UK.

European Union citizens, non-EU member states of the EEA (Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland), Switzerland, and members of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT) do not need a visa to enter the UK.

If you have any further visa questions visit the official UK government website.
Anyone that has any questions, please feel free the comment below and I will answer them for you.

London's Least Used Stations No.3 - South Greenford

We're still counting down the Top 10 Least Used Stations in London, and we're down to No.3, this time back out onto the Greenford branch where we have previously been in this series, it's South Greenford.

We're still basing this on the 2015/2016 ORR stats, even though the new 2016/2017 are now out - but the Top 3 have stayed the same/not changed, which is fortunate!

ORR stats:

Atherstone Walk, Woods and Canal.

Atherstone, Warwickshire.

Berney Arms - Least Used Station in Britain 2019

The new 2019/20 statistics have just been released and it shows that Berney Arms in Norfolk only had 42 passengers making it the new least used station in the whole of Britain.

Berney Arms was actually closed for 15 months due to Network Rail works replacing manual crossing gates in the area with automated ones. It reopened on Monday 24th February 2020, meaning that the accouting period for this years figures only lasted 52 days until it ended on the 31st March 2020.

Arguably therefore (42 divided by 52) it means that it averaged 0..8 passengers per day. Berney Arms normally gets around 1,000 passengers a year.

Have a look at the Facebook for page for Sheila and her books, and the good news that a pub/Bistro is returning next year!

Mmmmm, Humans! - Episode 25, Day 41 - Polesworth to Smethwick Rolfe Street

It's Friday 16th June, and we start the day by getting the once-a-day only service from Polesworth - but who catches this train? Shrewsbury is pretty, and we chat to a passenger with accessibility needs, and discover a brilliant community artwork installation at Smethwick, Birmingham.

Download the All The Stations theme tune from iTunes here: (other stores are available....)

I travel from just past Hawkesbury Junction to Polesworth. Sasha from Sasha's Narrowboat Life, helps me down the Atherstone flight of locks.
We do the locks on the hottest day of the year, and my GoPro gives up recording during the heat of the day. Temperature inside the boat flys past 30c.

Polesworth Station

Polesworth Station is a 'Parliamentary Station', only seeing one train per day at 7:23 in the morning, towards Tamworth, Lichfield, Rugeley and Stafford, Monday to Saturday. Return tickets the same day are not possible and although by going on a circular route it may be possible to return a different day this is in all probability not practicable. There is no shelter or seat on the operating platform. However on the other plactform which is still in place there is a shelter but this is not accessible!

Polesworth Railway Station LEAST USED Station in Warwickshire (West Midlands Trains)

Polesworth is currently the least used railway station in Warwickshire with 136 entries & exits in the latest passenger usage statistics from 2021/2022. Polesworth is usually the least used station in Warwickshire.
Polesworth station has 1 platform still in use on the down line on a 4 track section on the West Coast Main Line, Trent Valley line. The second platform on the up line was disused since upgrade work on this section of line meaning it would no longer be possible to reasonably use both platforms however there have been proposals to reinstated the second platform.
The line through this station is electrified.
From the May 2023 timetable there is a morning service each weekday and Saturday which goes to Crewe from Northampton. As only 1 platform is in use services can only call in the northbound direction and the service level was reduced since the southbound platform was made out of use.
All passenger services calling at Poelsworth are operated by London Northwestern Railway (West Midlands Trains) with the rolling stock mainly being 4 carriage (often paired as 8 carriage) class 350 Desiro trains with the new 5 carriage class 730 Aventra trains planned to be introduced on this route within the next few years.
The 3 letter station code for Polesworth is PSW.
The DfT category is F2.
The station is managed by London Northwestern Railway.
I visited Polesworth and filmed this video in May 2022.
