Patmos is a lovely Greek island in the Aegean Sea. It is famous as the location where John of Patmos received the visions found in the Book of Revelation of the New Testament - and where that book was written. Patmos is one of the northernmost islands of the Dodecanese complex.

Patmos island, Greece. If travelers want to find a hidden corner on the Aegean Sea in order to spend their holidays in solitude and silence far from the bustle of civilization, to touch religious shrines, then the best option is the island of Patmos. Small in area, without crowds of idle tourists - Patmos is positioned as the religious center of Hellas. From a bird's eye view in a video shot in 4k, the island looks like a fairy-tale dragon, whose head is turned towards the Turkish coast. Travelers aspire to this blessed place because of the mystical, almost beyond natural atmosphere and mental relaxation.
general information
The Greek island of Patmos is located in the southeast of the Aegean Sea, is part of the northern part of the Dodecanese archipelago, 70 km from the Turkish coast. South of Patmos is the island of Kos. The island itself consists of three parts, which are connected to each other by narrow isthmuses about 2 km wide.
The area of Patmos is only 34 square kilometers, the number of inhabitants living here does not exceed 3 thousand people. It will take no more than half an hour to drive from one end of the island to the other.
The history of the settlement of this place goes far back thousands of years. Patmos was referred to in 5th century sources as the religious center of Greece, the Jerusalem of the Aegean.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the island was captured by Italy and remained under the protectorate of the Italians until the middle of the century, then returned to the Greek territory.
The island is saturated with an atmosphere of religiosity and the amazing beauty of wildlife.
Capital
The capital of the island is Hora (another name is Skala). The historical center of the city, the monastery of St. John the Evangelist is perfectly preserved, walking along the winding ancient streets, you can feel the mystical atmosphere of the capital with time as if frozen here. From the top of the mountain, on the slopes of which the city is located, beautiful landscapes of the island, the sea and snow-white buildings with flat roofs open up.
How to get there
Patmos is a fairly remote island, you can only get here by sea. From Athens, a ferry with pilgrims runs here, you can get to Patmos from the islands: from Kos by ferry or catamaran - about 2.5 hours. You can also sail here from Rhodes, located much further.
The beaches of Patmos
Despite the rather poor and deserted terrain, Patmos has beaches. But these beaches are not equipped with such a level of comfort as on the famous neighboring islands. But warm weather and clear sea makes it possible to relax on the beaches until mid-autumn.
The three most visited beaches of the island are Psili Amos, Agios Theologos, Agrio Livadi.
Nature
The air and atmosphere of the island exude peace. A unique feature of the island is the many capes, bays and bays, with a stunning panorama of the surroundings. The main bay of the island is Porto Skala, which is the port of Patmos.
And although there is no chic vegetation here, there is almost no forest and comfortable beach infrastructure, travelers come here because of the religious sites and the special aura of the island.
Main cities and resorts
The capital of the island of Chora is the only city and port on Patmos. All coastal towns and villages are saturated with a cozy atmosphere of a calm provincial life and are drawn to stay in them longer.
What to watch
But not nature is the main asset of Patmos, but unique churches, the special goodness of prayerful places and the desire to find peace.
The main religious shrine is the Cave of Revelation, where the Apostle John wrote the book Apocalypse. This is where the pilgrims come first.
On the island with a small territory there are about 50 churches and monasteries, among them the most famous and visited are:
- fortress and monastery of St. John;
- monastery Zoodohu Pigis;
- theological school of Patmos;
- caves of Kinopu, Apollo, Alykes and others.
Attractions of the island of Patmos
In addition to amazing buildings and churches, monasteries, there are amazing natural and man-made beauties on Patmos. Wooden windmills are perfectly preserved.
It will be pleasant to walk along the ancient squares of Aya Levias and Xanthos - amazing buildings of the neoclassical era attract attention.
Patmos is an island with an amazing mystical atmosphere and Orthodox places, conducive to a leisurely and thoughtful acquaintance with it.

We’re in Patmos! A relatively undiscovered island in the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. There is no airport in Patmos so you have to come here by boat, making it feel quieter and more untouched.
We start things off at one of the highest points on the island with amazing views, the capital of Patmos called Chora. Chora is a small town with the Monastery of St. John at the very top. We spend some time exploring the cute town and also get some lunch. Patmos is very famous for being a Christian Pilgrimage site, it contains the Cave of the Revelation where John of Patmos was thought to have written the Book of Revelations (the last book of the Bible).
After this we head to a small beach town in Patmos called Grikos. We spend some time here just lounging on the beach.
Later we head make to one of the main areas of Patmos called Skala. This is likely where you’ll stay if you come to the island, it’s where the ferries arrive to and also where the majority of restaurants are.
ABOUT PATMOS
Patmos, an Aegean island in the north of Greece’s Dodecanese island group, is a significant Christian pilgrimage site. Its Cave of the Apocalypse is where John of Patmos (St. John the Theologian) is said to have written the Book of Revelations. A fortresslike, 11th-century monastery dedicated to the saint overlooks the whitewashed houses of the hilltop capital, Hora (also known as Chora).

The trip of a lifetime! After visiting the inspiring sites in Athens and Corinth, embark on your cruise sailing to the Jerusalem of Aegean” - Patmos Island - and visit the first Christian Church of Ephesus in Turkey. Continue your journey to the northern Greece to follow the steps of Apostle Paul.
DAY 1 - ARRIVE ATHENS, GREECE.
Arrive at Athens Airport where you will be met by our representative and transfer to the hotel. Travel in time, exploring a city with a history of more than 5,000 years! Group dinner will be provided at the hotel.
DAY 2 - ATHENS & CORINTH
This morning, we depart for our morning tour out of Athens. On the way, we stop at the historic Corinth Canal. It was Corinth (Acts 18:1-18) where Apostle Paul lived and worked, established a thriving church, subsequently sending two of his epistles now part of the New Testament. Return to Athens for an afternoon city tour. Climb up to Acropolis Hill to see the famous Parthenon Temple, Erectheion and Temple of Athena Nike and to nearby Mars’ Hill (Areopagus) (Acts 17:22) where Apostle Paul spoke to the Athenians about the one and only God. City panoramic bus tour. Dinner at hotel.
DAY 3 - CRUISE TO MYKONOS
After breakfast at the hotel, embarkation on the Greek Islands cruise. Our first port of call is Mykonos. Stroll on your own through the whitewashed, flower-decked alleyways, climbing to the sculpture church of Paraportiani or along the waterfront of “Little Venice” to the famous windmills. Enjoy dinner on board and at 11p.m. we sail for Kusadasi, Turkey.
DAY 4 - KUSADASI (TURKEY) - PATMOS (GREECE)
Arrive at Kusadasi port in Turkey. This is the starting point for our tour to Ancient Ephesus (Acts 18:19-21). Apostle Paul preached to the Ephesians, lived and worked here for a number of years. We tour the spectacular ruins in the city which was founded in the 10th century B.C. Sail to Patmos. Arrive Patmos (Rev 1:9) in the afternoon and enjoy a tour to the Monastery of St. John where he was exiled and wrote the Book of Revelation. We also visit the Grotto of the Revelation (Cave of Apocalypse) before embarking on the cruise ship. Sail to Heraklion, Crete and enjoy dinner on board.
DAY 5 - CRETE & SANTORINI
At 7 a.m. we arrive at Heraklion, Crete (Acts 27:7-13). You can join the optional excursion to the Minoan Palace of Knossos, home of King Minos and the legendary Minotaur (half-bull and half-man). After a few hours, we sail for Santorini, the island with the most magnificent landscape! Ride the cable car up to the white-washed town of Thera, perched high on the rim of the ancient volcano. Set sail back to the port of Piraeus around 9:00p.m.
DAY 6 - ATHENS - METEORA MONASTERIES – KALAMBAKA
Disembark after breakfast on board. Meet the local guide and board the bus for a journey to Central & Northern Greece! Upon arrival in the town of Kalambaka we enjoy a spectacular drive up to visit two Meteora Monasteries which are built on the top of colossal symmetrical gray and reddish boulders.
DAY 7 - BEREA - THESSALONICA
We depart from Kalambaka and continue our journey to Thessalonica. On our way we will stop in Berea (Acts 17:10-15) to see the mosaic monument commemorating Apostle Paul's preaching. Later in the afternoon, check-in at the hotel in Thessalonica. Enjoy the evening at your own leisure. Take a walk by the seaside promenade and explore the beautiful city center.
DAY 8 - PHILIPPI – KAVALA
City tour of Thessalonica, the Old City Walls, the White Tower, Galerius Arch and the Rotunda. Continue with a drive to Philippi, the site where Apostle Paul established a strong church. To this congregation he sent his letter (Acts 16:9-33). We see the river where Lydia is said to have been baptized, the ruins of a prison where Apostle Paul and Sylas had been kept, the Agora, 5th and 6th century Basilica and the Theater. Continue to Kavala, the ancient port of Neapolis (Acts 16:11).
DAY 9 - THESSALONICA – ATHENS
Today we commence our enchanting drive back to Athens passing by Tempi Valley and Katerini where we gaze upon the Mount Olympus. Farewell group dinner will be provided at the hotel in Athens.
DAY 10 - ATHENS DEPARTURE
As you reflect on these past few days, full of history and spiritual inspiration, you will be transferred to the Athens International Airport for your flight home.
