La fiesta de la sidra en Nava, Asturias (España - Spain) - Where is Asturias

The council of Nava is symbolically the heart of Asturias because of its situation at the centre-east of the region and because the area is well known for its Cider production of which the Asturians are very proud.

This is the main area where the land, towns and overall life revolve around the production of the most important drink and symbol of the Principality, natural Cider. In fact because of their love for and dedication to this traditional beverage, with low alcohol content, Nava were awarded with the Exemplary Town of Asturias Award in 1996. This is an award given by the Prince of Asturias Foundation and delivered in person by the Prince and Princess of Asturias. The award shall be conferred upon a town, village, population centre, scenic area or group of people in the Principality of Asturias that have stood out in a notable way in defending and conserving its natural or environmental setting, its historical, cultural or artistic heritage, or in the carrying out of outstanding communal works or other such displays of solidarity.

Other important aspects of Nava are the fine examples of religious and civic architecture such as the Palace Casa-Fuerte de la Ferreria from the 16th century in the town of Fuensanta, The Palace of the Cogolla, also from the 16th century or the parish church of El Remedio.

In the location of Ceceda you can see the traditional architecture of the rural areas of the region.

In Nava you will also find the Museum of Asturian Cider, build to show and promote this popular beverage through an interactive experience.

There are many routes throughout the area like the Sendero Local de Nava (Local Route of Nava), Ruta del Picu la Mua (Route of La Mua Peak), Ruta de la Ribera del Rio La Pena (Route of the riverside of La Pena river) or Ruta de les foces del Rio Pendon (Route of the ravines of the Pendon river). It also offers close proximity to the beautiful beaches of the Cider Region and the Dinosaur Coastline.

The Gastronomy in Nava is based around the traditional Asturian fare, with stews, Asturian reared beef and fresh fish from the see and the rivers. It has special importance the quality shellfish from the area, cooked with rice or in many ways but always very tasty. And of course the real star of the area is Cider which is great for drinking but also for cooking with.

Nava enjoys one of the best parties in Asturias, the Festival of the Cider considered of National and International Touristic Interest and the Astur Market considered of Regional Interest.

Cangas de Onís ( Cangues d'Onís in Asturian ) is a council of the autonomous community of the Principality of Asturias , Spain ; a parish of said council; capital of the council; and one of the 18 judicial parties of Asturias .

The council of Cangas de Onís limits to the north with Parres and Ribadesella , to the east with Onís and Llanes , to the west with Amieva and Parres and to the south with the province of León . The motto on its shield is Minima Urbium Máxima Sedium. It has a population of 6,332 inhabitants ( INE , 2017 ). In 1908 Cangas de Onís was granted the title of city .

Cangas de Onís was the capital of the Kingdom of Asturias until 774. King Don Pelayo settled in this town , and from here he undertook with his people actions on the northern territories of Spain, as the only source of resistance to Muslim power , a the Visigothic Kingdom has disappeared . The battle of Covadonga took place in this municipal area in 722 , where Don Pelayo defeated the Muslim forces and consolidated a power and prestige that allowed him to remain independent and found the first Christian kingdom after the defeat of the Visigoths in the battle. of Guadalete .

More than 2000 hectares of the council are part of the Picos de Europa National Park . Inside the park is the monumental complex of Covadonga , where the Reconquest began in 722. 12 kilometers from Covadonga, there are the so-called lakes of Covadonga (there are three: Enol , Ercina and Bricial , although this only has water during the thaw ), of great relevance in the cycling field. In the capital of Cangas de Onís, there is the one known as Roman Bridge , although its construction actually dates from the Middle Ages .

The population of Cangas de Onís is settled at the junction of the Sella and Güeña rivers , the latter being a tributary of the former. In the valley between the two rivers is the Chapel of the Holy Cross , which was a temple from Roman times, rebuilt during the reign of Favila de Asturias .

????Puente Romano de Cangas de Onís????
(=Roman bridge of Cangas de Onís)

The Roman bridge of Cangas de Onís or Puentón is a construction located on the river Sella as it passes through Cangas de Onís , and that separates the councils of Cangas de Onís and Parres , belonging, therefore, half to each council . His figure is associated with the town of Cangas de Onís.

El Puentón is one of the symbols of Asturias. It is part of the coat of arms of Cangas de Onís, together with the cross on the inverted crescent that recalls the victory over the Muslims in the Battle of Covadonga and the legend Minima urbium, maxima sedium (smallest city, maximum headquarters).

In 1931 it was declared a Historic Artistic Monument . In its surroundings, many riverside salmon from the Sella River area usually go fishing.

Although it is known as the Roman bridge, it is a medieval construction dating from the reign of Alfonso XI of Castile with its famous banded arch and two other minor arches that are uneven. The bridge, which is located on the Roman road that linked the towns of Lucus Asturum (present-day Lugo de Llanera ) and Portus Victoriae (present-day Santander ), was built on a previous one that could have Roman origin.

The original bridge consisted of seven arches and has been restored and repaired many times throughout its existence. In 1876 it underwent an in-depth repair that is marked by a tombstone in the center of it. It was also restored in the 1940s and 1943. It ceased to provide road service with the construction of a new bridge at the end of the 19th century. In the restoration work, pieces of medieval arches used as fillers have been found. In 1939 a large Victoria Cross , a symbol of Asturias, was placed in the center of its great central arch , coinciding with the return of the image of the Virgin of Covadonga from Paris after the Civil War.

Travel Spain: Asturias -- Nature's Paradise: Ribadesella & Llanes

On a gorgeous and warm morning of May 29, 2010 I left Cangas de Onis to drive to the Atlantic coastline of Asturias. My first stop was in Ribadesella, a picturesque mountain town on the Cantabrian Sea, right where the River Sella flows into the Atlantic Ocean. My first destination was the Cueva de Tito Bustillo, a limestone cave with prehistoric cave paintings dating back more than 14,000 years. Today, the cave is a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site.

Then I started to explore the town Ribadesella itself with a walk through the cobble-stoned historic city centre. I continued my walk on the extremely scenic Paseo Maritimo that provided me elevated vistas over the city, the River Sella and its estuary and the mountainous backdrop framing this gorgeous location.

On the western side of the river are the beaches of Ribadesella which are punctuated by several impressive villas and mansions that were built by Indianos, Asturian emigrants who had found great fortunes in Cuba, Mexico and Argentina and who had returned to their homeland to build opulent mansions and invest in the local infrastructure.

In the afternoon I drove eastwards and made several stops at scenic lookout points over the Cantabrian Sea. I finally arrived in Llanes, a scenic coastal town in northeastern Asturias, and walked through the cobble-stoned medieval streets of this traditional fishing port. Then I drove into the mountains, as the Picos de Europa mountain chain almost touches the sea here. Past picturesque high-altitude mountain pastures full of cows and sheep I slowly made my way back to the outskirts of Llanes where I checked in at my abode for the night: the Posada de Babel, an attractivel rural hotel that is surrounded by meadows and forests.

I had a lovely chat with the owners Blanca and Lucas and learned about their transition from a hectic lifestyle in Madrid to their contented rural life as hotel owners. In the evening Lucas took me into the hotel's kitchen and showed me the process of making just the perfect merluza (hake) dinner. The delicate fish was placed on a plate covered with a garlic / tomato / black pepper sauce, and garnished with ginger, fried leak and tapenade. Very savoury, this meal just melted in my mouth and a restful night in this country retreat got me ready for another day of discoveries in Asturias.

------------------------------------------------

RIBADESELLA:
